Just out of curiosity, does anybody here use cord magic in their practice? It's one of those more 'minor' magical arts but is commonly mentioned in the various sourcebooks. If you've used it before, what sort of methods have you used? What sorts of cords, how many knots, incantation types, etc. Or is this an area of magic most of you haven't bothered with?

A spell to make the wind go away? I hope none of you ever try that. (I'm not directing this towards you gypsy queen... this is for everyone). Using magic to manipulate the weather is bad. Doing so... you might as well be manipulating the Goddess herself. It's just disrespectful.

Off topic I know, but also even when you try to manipulate the weather just where you are - it can change the weather patterns all over the world. Weird, but true.
On topic...I have never heard of "cord" magic. (goes of to google it...) Well...maybe I have - I just never knew it was called that. When I was younger we used to buy "wish" bracelets. You made a wish when you tied it onto your wrist, then you were supposed to leave it on until it fell off and whenever it fell off your wish would come true.

Cord magick or knot magick is an excellent way to "store" magickal energy. It is also good for building up energy over a period of time, adding a knot each time you raise up the energy. You focus it into the knot instead of releasing it to the universe. It is also good if you need energy from a certain moon phase, you can store it until needed. Then you would untie the knots to release the energy when you have a specific need of it. I don't often have need of it, but it s a good tool to know about.

I would be interested in taking a class on cord magick if anyone would be willing to teach it in the Academy. I've heard about it, and used it to do a little bit of frienship braclets, but I would like to learn more.

I've used cord magick for protection and health spells, which are my specialty. As some have already mentioned, cord magick is used to store up energy, and can also be used for binding, as in restricting an illness or bad energy. It's a fairly straight-forward standard spell, but as such, is easily tailor fit to suit many different disciplines of witchcraft. Since you can customize the color of the cord, the length, number of knots, etc., cords can by easily worked into just about any ritual.

i read a spell once...Maby here but i dought it. It used a green ribbon and that was it. The peerson read each line and made a knot. It was called i belive "nine knots of money" Each one was used to get you to your goal. You had a set price you were going for, i forget what, maby it was optional. But u knoted the ribbon as i remember. Then they didnt untie it. i would definantly use a ribbon or fabtic or string to use cord magick in my rituals if i ever needed it. And as another has said, having a class on cord magick would be more than apreciated...^_^

Using knots to store energy more huh? That's an interesting application. The main spell I've run across is a nine-knot cord spell that uses nice rhythm, meter, and rhyme. I haven't found much of detail on the subject, but that may be because it just isn't as popular as something like candle magic is. One of the interesting things is the differing opinions on what to DO with a cord once you've knotted it for a spell. When, if ever, do you untie the knots?

I'm curious in trying cord magic now, I've never given it a second thought before. It sounds like something that would fit into my ritualless way of working. Are there any good resources around? confused

Starlock One of the interesting things is the differing opinions on what to DO with a cord once you've knotted it for a spell. When, if ever, do you untie the knots? In one of my own healing spells, I used a green cord tied into five knots. When I was done with the ritual, I buried the cord as a way to release the energy of the knots slowly over time, thus slowly dispelling illness. In other spells, you may burn the cord afterward, to completely and immediately dash the energy stored within the knots (this, also, may speak to the intent of your work; meaning, banishing or binding). Untying the knots release the energy in such a way that things go back to the way they were before you performed the spell. For example, a love spell gone awry may be reversed, at least partially, by releasing the knots (assuming, of course, that you used a cord in the original spell). Lastly, if you were performing a spell in which a cord is tied in a loop, like a friendship or a love spell, and later wished to re-focus those energies elsewhere, you could cut the loop rather than untying the knot (the phrase "severing ties" comes to mind).

I think cord magick is more like tying knots into a string while saying a spell.

The gypsy Queen hmm. durring a handfasting, dont they use cord magic? the ropes that tie the two lovers? That's exactly right. That's where the term "tying the knot" comes from. WelkingPath I think cord magick is more like tying knots into a string while saying a spell. That's it in a nutshell. Incorporating incantation into your cord ritual can be immensely powerful; each word, phrase or idea can be represented by a knot in the cord.
