This is the thread for all anime regarding any type of giant robots. =D From Super Type to Real Type*, everything of the sort goes here.
Giant robot anime has been around in Japan since a VERY long time ago.. Back even when I wasn't even born yet. >_> ... I think some people may have seen Gigantor, or Tetsujin 8 gou.. was it? I'm not a big fan of it though, so I wouldn't know, but giant robot anime has evolved a LOT since their first creations.
... It might be cool to make a time line of all the Giant Robot Anime ever released.. >_> But.. I think Wikipedia would have something like that..
* Categorization used in the Super Robot Wars series by Banpresto, where Super Types are those robots that look kind of funky and often only aired in Japan, usually in the older times, while Real Types are the realistic looking robots such as Gundam, Macross, and many others.

Doh! I had some stuff regarding Gundam series copied... and I forgot to paste them. >_< And I've copied something else instead, so... I'll have to.. post it tomorrow. It's regarding how I didn't like G Gundam and Gundam Wing as much as the other Gundam series.. @_@

If you ask me, Gundam is more Super-Type... Whereas Mobile Suits are just "Real Type" razz
Then again, I've never really seen anything with a "Super-Type". I've played some Mech Warrior, and that's what I would call Normal... Robots that're slow and just shoot missles as opposed to agile things that transform into jets (sometime) with laser swords and... you get the point.

LoL. You might find a clearer distinction between Super Type and Real Type when I give you a list of some Super Type robots.
Majinger Z (Mazingar?), Great Majinger, Majin Kaiser Getter Robo, Getter Dragon, Shin Getter Combattler V, Voltes V
Perhaps the more known Super Types.
As for in the Super Robot Wars games, Super Types are generally slow robots with high power and defense that just busts through with power. o_o As for Real Types, they're the agile type that are more evasive and often work in numbers, making them perhaps more ideal in support.. ?
Personally though, I love the Real Types more than Super Types, both in anime and games. XD The Super Robot Wars series is just amazing though. I believe Super Robot Wars Original Generation 1 for the GBA was released in the US. o_o ... That's the only SRW game I know that came out in the US though. D=

Anyway, regarding G Gundam and Gundam Wing, IMO.. G Gundam was an oddball of the series, since, although it's a Gundam anime, it doesn't start off as a war. Even more weird, it's a martial arts tournament.. with Gundams. ._. How rich would you have to be to bust out mobile suits for entertainment's purposes? All those maintenances and everything required, with deadly moves ... which I would think would potentially blow up other mobile suits, which would most likely kill the martial artist piloting it, unless the proper escape procedure is taken. But that aside, it isn't much later of the show when a war DOES break out, but it's still not the same as the other Gundam series' wars. D= It's against the Death Army, which is.. pretty much an army of undead robots. ... @_@ ... Ehhh... I don't know if I want to go on about this anymore.. LoL. The type of drama in this show is just significantly different from those of the other Gundam series, which is what I liked about the Gundam series.
As for Gundam Wing.. ._. I think there's a whole site of inconsistencies somewhere regarding this show. Like how Wing Zero can destroy a whole space colony with one blast of its' Twin Buster Rifle, but there are other mobile suits that can withstand a blast or two from it. Or how Heavyarms Gundam's blueprints don't make any sense. @_@ Like any robots, they need a lot of machinery to make it move, right? ... Only problem is, most of the space inside Heavyarms is occupied by countless numbers of micro missiles and gattling guns, leaving practically no space for any of the machinery normally necessary to move a giant robot. >_> But it's still moving regardless.. If you see a picture of Heavyarms using it's Full Open Attack, then you'll know what I mean about it. It really doesn't make much sense.. @_@
... On top of that, the bishounen pilots and emo personalities and stuff like that.. @_@ Ehhhhh... It might appeal to some, while... the others, like me, it kind of chased me away from it. D= Not sure what it is...
I do have to say that I enjoyed Z Gundam and ZZ Gundam, as well as Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny, and a few others that I've seen..

The first Gundam series that I didn't particularly like (If I remember right) was SD Gundam. Human-sized robots with personalities. And the art was creeping me out. I know that there are other anime with CG, but I guess this was my first time seeing that type of art style. I was creeped out nonetheless. I still watched it to see where it would go. Then it ended in mid-series.

I'm not sure if there's more than one SD series.. but I did see a CG SD Gundam anime in Japanese that Taco was watching.. ._.; .... It's just a kiddy-version of a Gundam anime. Nothing more. @_@
I didn't quite add that in my list of Gundam anime, since... well, it's far too kiddy, as well as it is ... technically a CG anime than the normal anime.. ._. Er... Well, it's just really too different to be considered in the list of Gundam anime IMO. @_@ Although it is still a Gundam anime, I guess.
Now, I wanted to watch some Gundam anime.. but I forgot which one it was... It's the one before Crossbone Gundam... And then I'll watch Crossbone Gundam. >_> LoL.

I never really watched Gundam, but I do remember one episode from Gundam Wing. Some guy was fighting an evil guy or whatever, then steps out and blows the thing to smithereens in an attempt at suicide. Caught my attention immediately, but then I haven't seen one since.
