I'd like to know if there's a difference between gossiping and talking about a friend when they're not around. I was talking to some friends after school about our other friends and my younger brother, "No, I don't want to hear gossip!"

In my opinion, it's only gossip if you're saying stuff you wouldn't say to their (whoever your talking about)face. But that's just me.

I dunno...i think gossip would be more along the lines of saying something that was either hurtful or untrue (or both) behind someone's back neutral
