Name: Noel
Age: 14, freshman in high school
Birthday:
Height: Shorter than she'd like
Weight: Heavier than she looks
Likes: Christmas, kids
Dislikes: bullies
Personality: She acts rather indifferently towards the people in her town. She will protect those that need her protection but more because it seems like the right thing to do and not because she cares for the people that she helps. The more she grows while raising Holly the more she is able to relate to and live in the world around her rather than just going through the motions as she was before.
Hobbies:
Background: Noel never really had friends growing up. She was friendly and helpful to everyone she met but whenever someone tried to be her friend she would avoid them until finally most of the people in her town learned to just leave her alone. Most of the people have seen how she helps others and acknowledge it but she just shrugs it off so they have stopped praising her for it. Little kids look up to her because she protects them from bullies if she happens to notice trouble, if she isn't around then the kids will go and get her and bring her to the fight so she can stop it. Her family loves her and tries to show it but she thinks they are just nice to her because they have to be. After meeting Holly and growing to love her as a sister she starts to realize that her family really does care for her and love her and that the things they do for her aren't just because of a sense of duty.

“Merry” and “Christmas” were the first two words that Holly exclaimed to the world as she floated up to greet her guardian after emerging from her orb on Christmas morning. She had loved being in the safety of the orb but the confines of it had become more than she could bear and being free from the orb had made her happier than she had ever felt, and that was saying something because Holly was always happy.

She twirled around the Christmas tree and peered at the lights. Finally she decided that the star on top of the tree was the highest spot and she perched herself on top of it. Noel crossed her arms and gave her little friend and cynical look. If her own lack of coordination was not enough to knock the undera off of the tree Noel was sure the wreath her friend was clutching would be.

“Come down here before you hurt yourself.” She ordered Holly but the little girl just would not listen. “Whatever you are must be the most stubborn species on this planet.” Noel muttered under her breath. She wanted to get to unwrapping the presents but she was afraid Holly would topple over and she would have to catch her. Noel gave one last hopeful look at her presents before staring up at Holly who was gazing around the room with an expression of pure bliss.

She sat there for a full five minutes before Noel gave up and reached to lift the undera off of the tree. But Holly was not going to give up without a fight. Her lower half was make of ribbons and half of them were wrapped around the wreath, the other half of the ribbons she now tangled in the branches of the tree. Noel stepped onto a chair so she was eye level with Holly and tried to pry her from the tree. When that didn’t work she tried untangling each ribbon but as soon as she got one lose it would entangle itself again. “Please come down from the tree?” she pleaded but Holly just smiled at her and giggled cheerfully.

“Fine, don’t come down.” Noel threw up her hands in mock defeat and stepped down from the chair. “I guess we’ll just have to give your present to someone else, I wasn’t really sure who it was addressed to anyway since I don’t know any Holly’s.” Noel peeked up at the undera out of the corner of her eye and was surprised to see that her chest had started heaving.

“But I’m Holly!” the undera wailed and broke into tears. Holly jumped from the tree trying to float toward the kitchen but her flight was wobbly and she forgot to let go of the branches. As she tried to speed off her ribbons stretched and snapped her back towards the Christmas tree. Reaching up, Noel scooped her friend out of the air before she collided face first into a branch heavy with glass orb ornaments.

Noel pulled her against her chest and patted her back so she could cry into her shoulder and Holly let go of the tree and wrapped her ribbons around Noel’s arms. Picking up Holly’s present Noel took a seat on the couch in between her Mom and Dad, both of whom were giving her disappointed looks for making the undera cry, and set Holly in her lap.

“I’m right h-here, I’m H-Holly!” the undera chocked through her tears gaining Noel more disapproving glares.

“I know you’re Holly. I know.” Noel said soothingly. She continued to rub Holly’s back and offered her some tissues. She lifted up the present she had brought from the tree and held it where Holly could see her name clearly. “See? Here’s your present! It’s addressed just to you!” Holly glanced at the wrapped package and then buried her face in Noel’s shoulder to continue crying. “Let’s see what’s inside it!” Noel suggested. She carefully unwrapped the present and dropped the wrapping on the ground net to her.

As Holly’s sobs turned into hiccups Noel held up the present to show it to her. Holly reached out and hugged it close. It was a tiny tote bag shaped like a fluffy teddy bear. In side it was just enough room to fit the orb Holly had been the day before. “Oh isn’t it cute!” Noel gushed about it. She pet the fur and admired the teddy bear hoping Holly would imitate her. “Don’t you just love it?” Noel asked the little girl.

Holly nodded and squeezed the bear bag close between her and the wreath she was still holding. Noel wiped Holly’s tears with a napkin and pulled her higher up into her lap. “It’s okay. That teddy bear will love you just like we love you because you’re our own special Holly.” Holly’s sobs and hiccups finally subsided but she still had the occasional sniffle every few seconds.

She leaned her head on Noel’s chest while Noel rocked her gently and watched as everyone else opened their presents. When Noel peeked at Holly she saw that the undera had fallen asleep but to her joy there was a little smile on her face. “Her coming out of the orb was the best Christmas present I got this year, she’s so cute!” Noel confided in her parents. She yawned, it had been a very exciting morning and now seemed like as good a time as any for a nap so she curled around Holly on the couch and drifted to sleep.

Holly looked past Noel from where she stood in the entry way. Outside she could barely see the blanket of snow that covered the ground.”It stopped snowing!" Noel called over her shoulder. As if on cue Holly cut through the air, racing past Noel and diving into the nearest pile of snow. She sputtered as she pushed herself up and brushed the snow off of the new jacket Noel’s dad had bought for her.

She turned to look at Noel but saw that the girl was distracted and so scooped up a handful of snow. The ribbons that made up the lower half of her body draped on the ground. Without saying a word she formed the snow into a ball and threw it as hard as she could at Noel hitting her on the side of her head. Holly giggled as she hid behind a bush next to the pile of snow.

She heard Noel wonder out loud what it had been that had hit her and peered around the bush to see what was happening. Noel was crouched down on the ground doing something she couldn’t see. Holly floated out from behind the tree and reached down to scoop up more snow, making sure to hold her wreath in front of her as a shield. Just as she raised her arm to throw the second snowball Noel spun around and aimed her own snow ball. “Score!” Noel cheered as the snowball soared through the center of the wreath and hit Holly in the gut. Holly dropped her own snowball as she fell to the ground, the first casualty in the battle that was to follow.

Noel’s family had been standing in the doorway watching them and now they chose sides. Scooping up snowballs they started chucking them at each other. Holly’s team hid behind the bushes and Noel’s team behind the low brick wall that was in the front yard. Holly’s favorite of Noel’s cousins made piles of snowballs for their team to use and made special care for Holly to have her own pile of tiny snowballs. A few times Holly found herself immobilized with laughter and her team mates had to pull her behind the bushes to protect the undera from the onslaught of snowballs. Holly thought she had never had so much fun battling someone.

Laughter and cheering filled the air until finally both teams lay exhausted in the dead zone between their two territories. After a moment of everyone trying hard to catch their breath they started making snow angels. Holly floated in the air to admire the snow angel she had made. It was lopsided with the wings and head but no dress because as an undera she had no legs with which to make the dress. She was proud of it though because hers was unique. “Cute!” Noel squealed when she came over to see what Holly’s angel looked like.

Holly threw one last snowball at Noel and ducked the snowball that Noel had saved for her. But as she raised her arm to start a second battle Noel’s mom leaned out of the front door and announced that the hot chocolate was ready.” Forgetting the snow everyone filed inside and removed their layers of clothes they had put on to play outside. Holly sat snuggled under a blanket she was sharing with Noel and sipped from the tiny mug Noel’s mom had bought her for Christmas.

Holly sat in the snow perched on top of the wreath she often carried with her. Snowflakes had finally stopped drifting down from the sky and she had gotten permission from Noel to go outside and pay while the girl finished an essay for her English class. “What to do?” she asked the birds that where hopping around her quickly eating the bread crumbs she was throwing them and waiting for more. “What to do?” she asked them again.

She smiled brightly fascinated by them for the moment. Then she got a wonderful idea. “A snowman!” she exclaimed to the air. The birds scattered as she jumped up and plowed into the snow. She shook her head to get the snow out of her hair and tried to think of how she would make a snowman. She had seen Noel’s cousins making them but they had been far away and she had not been very close attention so she decided to make it up as she went. Scooping up the snow around her she tried to form a ball like the ones she often made for snow ball fits. When she was satisfied that the ball was nice and round she set it on the ground and tried to roll it to make the ball bigger. Instead she just succeeded in pushing the ball and the snow around it into a pile of not-so-round snow. She tried to shape it into a ball and at first could not get it to work but slowly she was able to force it into a slightly roundish shape. The “ball” of snow that she created for the bottom part of the snowman was no wider than she was and much smaller than what a typical ball would be for the bottom of the snowman would be but she did not think she could make it any bigger without the help of Noel and so she was satisfied with it.

The second ball was easier to make than the first especially since it did not have to be the same size as the first ball but lifting it was a huge problem. It was too heavy to lift and too big to fit in her arms so she tried to lift it using her wreath. The first few times the snow fell right through her wreath but on the fourth try she was able to pack it hard enough to make sure it would not crumble. She wrapped the ribbons that made up the lower part of her body wrapped tightly around the wreath and heaved it up slowly. She pulled with all of her might and was finally able to lift it to the height of the first ball. Then she tilted the wreath upside down over the first ball and pushed it down so it would not fall.

After she lifted the wreath away from the second ball of snow she dropped the wreath of the ground and collapsed next to it so she would have a moment to rest. She wiped at the beads of sweat and started considering that after she made the last ball of snow that she would wait to decorate it until the next day. “I’m almost done.” She assured the birds that were gathering around again to eat the last of her bread. “Just you wait; it’ll be the best snowman you’ve ever seen.”

With a renewed grin on her face she started rolling the third ball of snow which much to her glee would be the smallest of all of them. This one she made sure was small enough to lift up without the help of the wreath and she was able to position it on the very top.

She patted some extra snow on it when in was in place and then floated back to admire her handy work. “Very good if I do says so myself.” Holly said nodding to the bird that had landed on top of the highest snowball and was leaning down to look and the undecorated snowball. The snowman was about the same height as her and she thought it was rather well shaped. The lopsidedness of the snowballs gave it character and she thought that if she submitted it to a contest she would win. “Well, I guess that’s it for today.” She said. She wiped the snow off of her hands and with a wave to the birds returned to the house for a cup of hot chocolate and a bedtime story from Noel.

Holly peered around the bush she had chosen to hide behind. In front of her a group of kids were huddled over the bank of the creek. The oldest of the children looked to be eleven years old and was drawing in the mud with his finger. “Three of you will circle around behind their main camp. Todd and Devon, you two will act as decoys coming from the front. The rest of us will be spread out to the side. When Todd and Devon cause the distraction we will attack the force that leaves the base. They won’t even notice when you three sneak in and take the tree house for us. Richard, have you finished the mud bombs?” the boy stopped talking and the other children tensed. Holly leaned closer trying to get a better look at them to find out why they had paused and lost her balance falling to the ground a few inches below where she activated a boogie trap. She squeaked loudly as the net snapped up around her and yanked into the air.

“Let me down!” she demanded when the net finally stopped its ascent. She twisted to glare at the leader of the group as the net swung above the ground. “Let me down now!” she shouted.

“You were right, there was a spy hiding there.” One of the girls congratulated the center boy. He did not seem very pleased though and continued to match her glare. “Why should we let you down?” one boy asked. Holly ignored him unable to think of an answer but continued to shout at the group. “We really should shut her up before she leads them right to us.” Another boy said. He covered his ears to block out her screeching but it didn’t help. “Be quiet.” One of the older boys ordered her as he chucked a rock at her. Holly barely had time to swing the net and herself out of the way before another rock came sailing at her. As uncouth as she found their methods it did manage to quiet her. “Don’t throw rocks at her. She’s just a little girl!” a girl exclaimed. She tugged on the arm of the boy that was throwing the rocks and forced him to stop even at the point of threatening to sit on him since she was a tad bit bigger than he was and probably had an advantage of a few years above him. “Just a little girl? She doesn’t even look human! What’s with her skin, does she have a disease or something?” another girl demanded crossing her arms and jeering at Holly. Another boy shook his head thinking to himself before speaking up. “I don’t think she’s a part of the big kids, we would recognize her. And she’s too young; they would never use her even if she was a little sister.”

Everyone else seemed to be listening to this boys words giving them as much weight as if it had been their leader speaking. Holly though had stopped struggling. The comment about her strangely colored skin had cut open an old wound. She had been teased by other children many times about the green splotches on her purple skin since she had emerged from her orb and sometimes she wondered why she even bothered to wonder away from Noel and the love Noel’s family showered her with. She tried to force her chin up high and stop the tears that threatened to drown her but it was difficult. Her chin quivered and she sniffled slightly trying to hold it back.

Just when she thought she was sure to start crying she heard an order given from the lead boy and then her stomach drop out from under her as she landed in a heap on top of the net that had been holding her. Her dress fell limp around her exposing her ribbons where legs should have been but she was too busy looking around to see who had released her to notice. A blonde boy slipped a Swiss army knife back into his pocket and nodded at the head boy who quickly crouched down next to Holly and pulled the bottom of her dress down to cover her ribbons.

“Leave her alone, she’s Noel’s friend.” The lead boy commanded the other kids. The children quickly snapped their mouths shut. Noel had helped them out on multiple occasions and any friend of hers was a friend of theirs. “I’m Matt, we’ve met before.” The boy said holding his hand out for her to shake. He tried to smile encouragingly at her hoping she would realize that her capture had been a mistake meant for someone else.

“You’re Noel’s cousin!” Holly exclaimed finally recognizing him. She had only seen him once and it had been at the Christmas party when she had left her orb. Her smile brightened and she looked around the group skipping over the girl that had made fun of her. She was among friends after all!

“Keep you ribbons hidden.” Matt whispered to her before pulling her up to a standing position. Then he spoke loud enough for the whole group to hear. “Go home.” He told her when he was sure her ribbons were hidden safely beneath the long dress Noel had bought her, there was no reason to arise more suspicion about this girl.

“I want to stay! Please, can’t I help?” Holly asked tugging on Matt’s sleeve. She had no idea what was going on and who they were attacking but it looked like fun and she wanted to be a part of it.

“No.” Matt said firmly pulling out of her grip. “We’ve already started and you would just be in the way. Maybe next time.” He told her. Then he turned his back and motioned with his hand for everyone to move out. Within moments the children were in a frenzy running about gathering their weapons and then disappearing into the bushes. Even Matt was gone before she could argue.

Only one person was left there by the creek. A skinny boy was gathering up what was left of the weapons he had made and was trying to clean up the mess left behind. As soon as they captured the tree house he would need to be there to set up shop away from the danger of battle. After all, what was an army without its weapons master? He paused for a moment and glanced at Holly who was still standing there watching him. “Did you need something?” he asked her wondering what gave her the right to disobey a direct order from their leader.

“I want to stay.” Holly informed her matter-of-factly.

Richard shook his head. “Matt gave you an order and when the general gives you an order you follow it.” He said. He picked up a rock and bounced it in his hand glancing at it and then at her. He was a horrible shot and had no intention of throwing it at the small girl but Holly didn’t know that and quickly turned and fled. Had she stayed even a second longer she would have seen the boy drop the rock on accident proving his lack of skills but as it was she was long gone and plotting her next meeting with the group. She was sure she could get them to let her stay if she thought about it hard enough. Next time she would try and next time she would succeed, she hoped.

“No.” Matt said firmly. He crossed his arms and turned his back to Holly. Holy floated around Matt and glared at him, her lip stuck out stubbornly.

“You said I could come next time!” Holly whined. She tugged on Matt’s sleeve trying unsuccessfully to convince him to take her to the creek so she could ‘play’ war with him and his friends.

“I said maybe.” He yanked his sleeve out of her grip and straightened his shirt. “This isn’t just a game you know, it’s real and there’s a lot at stake. You’re too small any way. Plus, it’s dangerous.” Matt grabbed his jacket and tried to leave, anxious to get to the battle field.

“I’m big enough to help! What about that Richard kid, he’s scrawny and you don’t even put him to use!” she pointed behind her out the door to where Richard sat behind a bush out of sight weaving palm tree leaves to make a container.

“He makes our weapons; we don’t need him to fight.” Matt said trying to push her to the side so he could get out of the door. He had been avoiding the house ever since Holly had wandered upon his troops and she knew it. His mom had forced him to bring them some cookies she had made and Holly had been waiting. As soon as the cookies had been delivered she had stopped her friend’s cousin in the hallway and tried to convince him to let her join his troops. Being convincing was harder said than done and they had been arguing for over five minutes.

“What makes him so good that he can make weapons better than I can?” Holly asked. She kept drifting from side to side blocking Matt every time he tried to get around her ensuring that he could not leave the house.

“He’s Indian.” Matt told her matter-of-factly. Holly’s eyes got big and she nodded. It was common knowledge to the children in their town that native Americans made better weapons, it was in their blood to able to and so she accepted this new piece of information until she remembered that Richard was blonde and therefore could not be Indian. When she pointed this out to Matt he informed her that his dad was blonde and that was why he was too.

“Oh.” Holly said taking a moment to think. “But I can be a soldier!” she insisted. Matt pointed out that she was too small and she objected rather loudly. Matt tapped his foot growing impatient.

“What’s all the racket about?” Noel asked stepping into the hall from the living room. She crossed her arms over her chest making sure not to lose her place in the book she was holding.

Matt looked up at his cousin relieved to see her and sure she would take his side. “Holly keeps insisting she wants to join my troops when she is clearly too small and will get in the way.” He told her.

“What does size have to do with anything? She beat you in the snowball fight you guys had last winter and she could barely even lift the snowballs.” Noel reminded her younger cousin. Holly beamed sure that she would win the argument now that her friend was there to help her. Noel turned to look at Holly giving her the same cynical look she was giving Matt. “But then again, they are his troops and it is up to him who he lets join.” She told the undera.

“But I want to fight too! I know I’ll be able to help them and Matt said I could join; now he won’t let me though!” Holly complained.

“Did you say she could join?” Noel asked Matt. He looked down at the ground not wanting to meet her eyes and mumbled that he had said maybe she could join but that it hadn’t been a promise. “How much could it hurt? It might be fun and you might learn something.” Noel told him. She really didn’t care if he allowed Holly to join or not as long as they stopped yelling in the hall so she could get back to her studying.
“Fine, she can come.” Matt said reluctantly. He checked his watch, the longer they stood there the more time that went by and he didn’t have a moment to lose. Soon his troops would assemble and ready for battle and if he wasn’t there no one would be able to lead them.

Holly cheered happy that she had won but Noel pointed a finger at her. “If I hear one complaint out of you, you’ll be restricted to the house, remember it was your idea to join Matt so you do as he tells you.” Holly nodded solemnly and promised she would follow orders. Then she followed Matt out of the door her dress fluttering around her unblocked by the ribbons that hung limply from the bottom of her body. Noel closed the front door, her head throbbing from the noise, and returned to her home work. She was sure Holly would be back soon announcing that she had changed her mind and she wanted to get done as much work as she could before then.
