With HTML 5 being in the works (and Opera already supporting it), what is your take on its chances of overthrowing XHTML? Will there even be a rivalry? Or might even both be overrun by pure XML?

Well, considering they all generally do different things at different times, I'm going to say probably not. XML involves a bit of a CMS and a database to read from, as it creates its own code. HTML5 is upcoming but nothing has been fully specified by the W3C yet. In the long, distant future (defined as 6mo or more) then yes, it will start to replace XHTML. However, that is its intention. There is no rivalry, it's the difference between using a jackhammer to paint a picture and a spoon. Different tools that you'll use for different reasons. HTML 5 is pretty speculative from what I've seen so far, it will probably be a little while before it's fully adopted.
