The dark form of the young lioness curled around the four smaller bodies burrowed against her side, eyes half lidded and drooping so that only glimpses of the tangerine color danced beneath the lids. She let out a slow sigh, the ache of effort heavy in her bones even now. She was tired, worn out from the long ordeal she had just endured. Like all mothers, however, her instincts were kicking in and she found that sleep was a long way off yet. She had the overwhelming need to stay awake, to watch them, to make sure they didn't so much as squeak in discomfort. Her head lay on her paws, a smile on her maw as she watched them her fascination, "they're so.. beautiful."

"They are..." The boys had been allowed into the birthing den only after the children had arrived; both Raylan and Izulu had insisted on doing it alone, no doubt their instincts and nature kicking in. However, now that the worst of the ordeal was over, they'd been allowed back in, of only briefly to admire their sons and daughters, "All of them. So colorful too," he motioned towards the twins of Raylan's litter, "Those marks under their eyes. My mother had them."
Othieno too was quite overwhelmed by the sight; three perfectly healthy lithe hyenas wobbled around, seeking milk from their mother. He dared not touch them though. At least for now, fearing he might just break them, even by breathing on them; they looked so small, "Where'd the rainbow come from?"

"The magical faerie land," Izulu supplied to her mate. She was tired and her voice lacked its usual energy, but she was very happy and wagged her tail. OOCH, that hurt!
The purple hyena laid her head upon her paws, not moving much as her pups tugged at their meal. The cubs and pups were all mixed together, between the circling paws of the two guarding mothers. The two of them had become such great friends in the past few moons, having been pregnant together. It was somewhat amazing to them, almost, that they'd even gone into birth at the same time. Then again, this also a normal function of both their species, to time pregnancies with one another, though neither of the females knew that. "A big light came from the sky and zooomed up to the cubs. it only touched mine though.. how odd."

“Truly?” came the quiet, slightly rasping voice. She was tired and she had been through quite a bit of labor. Her eyes shifted up towards Enok, shining as she watched him in the silence after her question. It truly was a miracle, to be here, with Izulu – their cubs between them. She almost laughed as she thought of Izulu’s cubs, but now she knew there really was no need to argue, even when there were quite noticeable differences between the two sets of small critters.
“Maybe the magical rainbow only likes purple,” she said with a little grin, flashing it towards Izulu as a laugh tumbled weakly from her mug. She leaned down to nose one of the cubs, not caring really whether it was pink or purple, pushing it closer back to the group.

"Truly, truly," came the male's answer from where he'd settled himself, against his mate's back, allowing her to rest against him, "She used to say they were from her side of the family, and was surprised nor me, nor my sister had them... I guess they skipped a generation," he chuckled as he lowered his head to groom along Raylan's neck. The small cubs, as much as he wished to clean them too, he did not; instinct alone kept him from doing so. At such a young age, they needed their mother's scent, and that alone. It was the females that most needed to bond with them. He was content with watching, for the time being.
Othieno snorted lightly, "Magical rainbow, huh? It could've come my way then, 'cause the gods know I'd have give up a hind leg to look a tad more flashy than this," a chuckle followed the statement from where he lay, also against his own mate's side, "I think it just favoured you more, love. Probably did something to please the gods, you did," a pause as he looked up at the sky, "At some point or another anyhow."

"I think you're fine, Othy," Izulu assured him. She smiled at one pup-cub that was nosing blindly against her shoulder. The hyena-lioness pushed it back towards the n****e with a gentle paw. "A bit drab, but that's okay. You make good cubs... even if magical rainbows do prefer them. If i see it again I'll tell it to find you, okay?"
She eyed the huge mess of cubs. "They need to be named before the spirits take them."

Raylan watched the hyena couple with a quirk of her brow, listening to their conversation. She couldn’t help the smile that spread across her lips, her head shaking and sending her mane tuft tossing around her head. She didn’t say anything, however, and instead turned her attention back to her mate. “Well, they mark our children now,” she said quietly, content with the feel of the little cubs squirming against her side, “so at least.. she is a part of them.”
“Before wha-” Raylan began, then immediately shut her mouth. If she asked Izulu what in the world she was talking about, she’d probably get an explanation that made even less sense than what the hyena had originally said. “Well, alright then. Do you have any ideas for names, or does anyone?” She glanced from Izulu, to the cubs, and then towards both fathers in turn.

"She always was a part of me; brave soul, she was," he turned to watch the hyena, a brow arching mildly before he lowered his head, whispering into his mate's ear, "She had to be, taking into account she was the one that took Oth in, and treated him like a son. Her idea entirely... I thought she was half crazy at the time," he chuckled mildly; it was clear the large brown lion had loved his mother dearly while she'd lived. That much was clearly evident in her voice. The notion of names made him pause however, his gaze turning down upon the children before he pointed at one of them, "How about Eros for this one? He's so pink... he reminds me of love. Hearts."
Oth, on the other hand was stumped, "Names," a pause followed before he tilted his head, pausing to point his paw at the boys of his litter, "Othy, and Oth junior," he then pointed at the female, "Izulu junior..." looking over at the lions' litter, he did likewise, "Those are Enok junior, those are Raylan junior! There, we're done!"
The lion frowned momentarily, "I like Eros."
