In Surah Nisa, the Qur'an says to draw the head-covering over our bosoms. The 'khumoor' (I'll confirm this later, sorry).
Hair is not only a woman's (and man's) beauty, but it's also our
vanity. I remember my days, fixing my hair, trying to make it look pretty and whatnot. I still do, but it's reserved for my family now. It's a very practical way to control your vanity, and Islam is a practical religion.
In addition, the Quran also says 'Obey Allah, and obey the Rasool (Messenger)' peace and blessings be upon him.
And Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), said to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), that only her face and hands should be showing.
It shouldn't be forced. I believe the closer you get to Islam, the more you'll want to do everything for the love of Allah and Muhammad, his messenger (peace be upon him).
I'm sorry for the lack of references.
But also, it's an Islamic sort of dress, it can identify us Muslim Sister's together. =)
I never used to wear it before, I used to make excuses, but I have worn it now, for myself instead of others telling me. And trust me, I REGRET not wanting to wear it before. It's the best feeling in the world, wearing hijab. I feel elegant, confident and well-presented.

One last question.
Why is that Muslim men have such a hard time with women?
Can they not control themselves with sexual thoughts?
It's not that. Muslim men and women have it strict because we are meant to be the people who are on the path. Paradise isn't easy.
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), said that the eyes, ears, hands-- everything commits adultery, but only the private parts consumate it.
As Muslims, we don't even go NEAR adultery, that is why, the believing men and women are required to lower their gaze, to observe hijab so they protect themselves from sin and enter paradise (InshahAllah!).
Again, sorry for the lack of references sister.
