I honestly have no clue. But religioustolerance.com should be able to provide you with some understanding. You might want to check in the links list too, users might have posted links there...
Speaking of which..i should probably update it... sweatdrop

When did alchemy become a religion? I thought it was just a search to transmute elements into gold? Sorry, not trying to be mean or anything, just hoping someone can enlighten me here..

Muera When did alchemy become a religion? I thought it was just a search to transmute elements into gold? Sorry, not trying to be mean or anything, just hoping someone can enlighten me here.. alchemy is the process of purifying or turning something that isnt perfect into something that is. alchemy has two parts, the physical study and the spiritual study. i have a book of dream meanings that dabbles a bit into the spiritual part of alchemy. that is what made me start to wonder.

Well, I'm not the expert on alchemy, but your local library or google could be helpful. Maybe Amazon.com?

If you're interested in spritual alchemy, I'd recommend initiating yourself into the Golden Dawn. But be aware, the Golden Dawn is not for the half-devoted. It is one of the most complete and complex magical systems out there. I've been studying it for two and a half years now and I'm only just beginning to scratch the surface. The reason I say Golden Dawn is because the entire process you undergo as an initiate is a path of spiritual alchemy. You begin as a Neophyte, having a rank of 0=0. each subsequent rank aquaints you with a new element and purifies that specific part of you. 1=10 Earth 2=9 Air 3=8 Water 4=7 Fire After grade 4=7 the initiate goes through what is called the Portal phase, during which they are infused with the fifth element, spirit. Once their mind has been purified by these elements, their spiritual education is about to begin. By rank 7=4, the initiate has taken on the most pure and spiritual form a living human being can. After death of their physical body, their spirit will continue to rise through ranks 8=3 to 10=1. Rank 10=1 is God-hood. Anyone knowing even a little bit about physical alchemy would no doubt see a paralel between the ranks of the Golden Dawn and the purification and transmutation of substances. ~*~*~*~*~*~ And as far as physical alchemy goes, yes, it is still practised. Here's a couple of links that explain more: http://www.alchemywebsite.com/johnreid.html - This page provides an actual course on creating a few alchemical tinctures and extracts. (There's other good stuff on that site too... take a look through it.) http://www.alchemylab.com/ - Through this page you can buy alchemical products such as essential oils and elixirs. And if you're looking for a book, The Alchemist's Handbook by Frater Albertus has been a best choise for years.

chaoticpuppet Sounds interesting, do you have any recommendations for infomation on the golden dawn? Yes. First of all, don't trust any websites on the subject (I learned that the hard way), and second, there's a couple of really good books on the topic: The Golden Dawn by Israel Regardie. This book is essential to anyone who wants to study this system in any way other than superficially. It contains nearly every teaching of the entire first order and many of the teachings from the second order. The Essential Golden Dawn by Chic and Sandra Cicero. This book provides readers with a basic understanding of the entire system, from how the grades work to what takes place in rituals. Two books: The Middle Pillar and The Tree of Life, both by Israel Regardie. These books will provide the reader with a fairly complex understanding of the qabbala, a central foundation to Golden Dawn magic, and how the qabbala can be used in magic. What You Should Know About The Golden Dawn (formerly titled My Rosicrucsian Adventure) by Israel Regardie. I'd recommend to anyone interested in the Golden Dawn to start with this book. It was published while the order was still secret and provides a near complete introduction to the entire order. It may possibly be out of print though, but I found a copy at my local library.

Depending on your library, you might be able to find them all. As for buying the books, The Golden Dawn, The Middle Pillar, and The Tree of Life can be found at almost any bookstore, and most bookstores will order The Essential Golden Dawn for no extra charge. What You Should Know About The Golden Dawn, like I said, might be out of print, so if you can't find it at a bookstore, try the library.

I forgot to mention, The Middle Pillar and The Tree of Life are *not* about the Golden Dawn. They are about the Qabbala, but it is required understanding to learn the teachings of the Golden Dawn. The Qabbala is a core principle to the entire system. I mentioned them because they are the two best books on the subject I know of.
