I play oboe, and my fellow double-reedist Jeanie is always argueing with me over which of our instruments is harder. She just keeps saying oboe is harder, but I insist bassoon is harder due to the fingerings. I mean, come on, oboe fingerings are practically identical to flutes'.

So which do you think is harder?

well i play bassoon and the fingerings are a pain in the a** once u move into the 3rd octave. i still cant get them right and i have been playing for like 3 years. my best friend plays the oboe and she does agree that the fingerings are a lot less difficult

I think oboe is harder to learn, but bassoon is harder to master.

Bassoon is waaaaaaaay harder than the Oboe. It's got way more keys to remember! :-O Oboe is awesome.

There may be plenty of fish in the sea

User ImageI'd say bassoon is harder, but I don't have much experience with either...User Image

but who really wants to date a fish?

I would say bassoon may be harder to learn the fingerings for, but oboe is harder to make it sound good. If you throw English Horn into the mix, its the easiest by far than the other two as far as fingerings and producing a good tone go.

So Oboe would be my final answer.

And yes, I am an oboe player...

Fingering is easier on an oboe, but then it has far more back pressure (trumepts and oboes do (very little, but it accumulates over the years) brain damage when you play due to the back pressure). So it comes down to whether you can handle possible passing out due to such pressure over deterity of fingers

yeah i agree basson definately harder...we have 2 used-to-be flute players playing those instruments....the oboe player got 1st chair in the all-district symphonic band [[highest band there is and auditions to get in the all-district band]] and the basson player didnt even make it in...and they both switched over at the same time.

They're both pretty, hard... or so I've heard. I only play the bassoon, and I've never played an oboe before.

I do know that if you don't get lessons for the bassoon when learning it you can really mess yourself up. There's so many little things that will come back to haunt you if you weren't taught them early on.

I started my wind instrument career on the oboe, and have never played the bassoon. However, I believe it to be the harder of the two, not because of fingerings, but because it requires much more air and support. I do believe double reeds are the most difficult wind instruments to play well (good tone and all that), although I don't think I'll ever try brass. Of the three double reeds then (easiest to hardest):
English horn (which I have played), oboe, bassoon
This is not based on how difficult it is to make a squawk on one of these instuments, but how difficult it is to actually play them well (most people should know the difference between a good double reedist and a bad one)
By the way, braces+oboe is not fun.

Both the oboe and the bassoon requite back pressure, the oboe just has a smaller hole to release it. Players of both instruments, at breath marks, usually breath out and then in.

I would say that the bassoon is harder because:

1) The oboe finds a nice pitch, and everybody tunes to them, including the bassoons.

2) At least 13 keys, just for the thumbs. (I do mean at least. There are lots of optional keys that can be added. The most I have seen is 17.)

3) The range. Bassoons have one of the largest ranges of all the woodwinds. I know fingerings for notes higher on my bassoon than on my clarinet. There are few instruments that can go lower than a bassoon.

3a) Oboes get to stay in treble clef. As a bassoon player, I have had music in base, alto, tenor, and treble clefs. (Although, I can say I have never had a piece of music with both alto and tenor clefs in it.)

OBOE is harder of course!
I mean i guess it depends on the person...
but i play the oboe (hooray!) and oboe is not only about learning the keys and embachure... its about making the nasally... not nasally.
It takes a lot of experience to make an oboe sound good

ive been playing for about a year and that's my lifeong goal

Actually thats just my opinion lol but anyways... idk, i dont play bassoon
