I'm a fan who sort of got to know David Bowie through Labyrinth, and I seem to like it when I encounter his songs on miscelleneous collections... But I am a little embarassed to admit I do not have a CD that is completely David Bowie redface Unless you count the Labyrinth soundtrack.
So, help a sorta-newbie out, and maybe suggest what's a good starter CD? xd

HI TELLAH. domokun
I don't think you're the only one here who first saw him in the Labyrinth. ^__~
As for CDs... I dunno. The first one I ever heard (and the one that got me hooked foreverandeverandever) was Hunky Dory. Ziggy Stardust is nice too, and it seems to be a popular one...

If you're really just getting started with any singer or band, I'd recommend starting with a best-of album. You get a varied mix of everything that artist has released to the date the best of is released (with David that covers a large period of time and a large number of changes), and you can from there get an idea of what eras of Bowie you want to persue or persue first.

*a* best of?
*the* best of - 2 cd is everything you need to get started and is perhaps the most available (certainly the one I've seen around most).
If you like that theres the accompanying dvd smile

I first found David under my covers. *evil snicker*
I was 5, my dad bought my a clay doll of jareth, and a tape of some of his music. It's funny now I'm dating a guy who has a coat just like Jareth's first appearance. The collar is so cool.

I'd recommend ChangesBowie. All very popular, easily digestable music for the beginner. Here's the link to it on Amazon so you can listen to samples.

When checking out a new artist, I always start at the beginning (or as close to it as possible). I'll usually have newer stuff that I downloaded and know I like, so that just in case the first one is bad, I know it gets better eventually. In the case of Bowie, I had a Best of album, then bought the newer one (Reality), and then started at the beginning. His first album is a tad rare though, so I started with the 2nd, Space Oddity, and I love it. Many times the store I go to doesn't have the next one I'm looking for, so I find the closest one I can. I want to experience them in more or less the same way that fans did as the albums were coming out, that I somehow missed (being it because I was born decades later, didn't know the band existed, or what-have-you)

Anyhow, I first saw him in the labryinth when I was 4-6 and didn't know who he was, and when I was about 11 my dad showed me his best of cd, got me a burnt copy, and it went from there.
