The True Backstory on Samantha and Warren
Many and many a year ago, on a little site called Pokemon Village, there existed a small forum community. Within that community, there existed a suburb known as the "Complete the Story" forum where Pokemon fans gathered to write collaborative stories that ranged from the normal Pokemon trainer journeys, to elaborate end-of-the-world apocalyptic scenarios, to...Pokemon in space. It was a close knit community, full of inside jokes about Mt. Dew and frozen string cheese.
Eventually, anthros and experiments migrated to the board, and a user called "Pikacar" at the time began a story called "Spliced: The CRONUS Project." It was a pet project of hers, as she didn't start many stories herself, and this one had involved a lot of pre-planning and character profiles, rather than the usual board standard of "start something and everyone just randomly jump in and make stuff up as we go".
It was a massive project, at least in comparison to most stories on the board, and many memorable characters were born. While some people created and controlled multiple characters, she created a main character based much on herself...or what she would like to be. This character was one "Samantha Hakan," an anthro Ninetales. She had other characters, like the goofy shiny black Persian, Darren, or the snooty Espeon, Layla, or even motherly Pidgeot, Celeste...but Samantha was a personal creation.
The story flow gradually removed Samantha from an awkward love triangle with Darren and Layla and instead found her gravitating towards another writer's character, one Arcanine anthro and on-island scout from the rebel group named "Warren Priest". Destruction and chaos seemed to follow the two, but together they managed to pull through just fine...we won't count all the collateral damage left in their wake.
She was snarky, sarcastic, and possessed a short temper...and would sacrifice herself for a friend without a second thought. He was calm, laid-back, but had a somewhat gruff way of getting things done...and might possibly have been just a bit crazy.
And yet, somehow, it all worked for them.
Years went by, the board slowed down, and eventually the host site apparently decided to let the domain die. It was a sad event for all, but especially for the writers who had no chance to save any of their favorite works.
Still, some of the writers had managed to keep in contact over the years outside of the message board, via e-mail and IMs. A small number had formed a pretty close-knit group, even though the members were scattered across the globe. In a way, they'd grown up together, helping one another through the various milestones of adolescent life.
Our young "Pikacar" had gone off to college, and now more often went by the name of "Teigra" on most websites, based on a Pokemon she'd designed on the board years ago. She still kept in contact with a few of the original writers, including Warren's creator in Australia. She had some tough times that first couple years and her friend was always there to listen if she needed an open ear. Despite personal trust issues, she found herself growing closer to her Aussie friend than some of her friends in RL. Apparently, something similar was happening on the other side of the ocean.
In October 2004, the pair became something more than just 'friends' after a long, personal conversation while Tei was pulling an all-nighter to get a Theater paper written. Eventually, the two started traveling back and forth to see one another, whenever time and money allowed for the trips. As of May 2008, the two were engaged and are currently planning to marry...as soon as Immigration will allow.
Samantha Hakan and Warren Priest have evolved and changed through the years, becoming more than just common OCs and something more like alter-egos of their creators. Perhaps the creators have changed too. |

How They Met in Extrasensory
There once was a young female Vulpix, alone in the world for the most part, but she fared well enough. With no regrets about parents she had no memories of, she learned early in life to take care of herself, as many Pokemon do ordinarily. She was independent, headstrong, though some might say stubborn, and snarky to boot. Still, she made a friend here and there in her travels, even if she never stayed in one place too long. She always felt like she was searching for something.
Perhaps a home she never felt she had. Or something equally as cliche and cutesy that she'd never admit to. Who knew?
Still our young Vulpix, known by the name of Samantha to her few friends, fared well enough and saw much of the world, carried by only her four paws. Until one fateful day when she ventured into the wrong Pokemon's territory. She wasn't stupid, nor was she belligerent. She knew the territory belonged to another and she was not intruding on purpose; she needed only to pass through and meant no harm. She would have been happy enough to explain as much if the attack hadn't come from behind without warning.
A Sneasel...female...with odd black markings on her left arm and back, across her shoulders. She never gave the intruder a chance to explain, only attacking in a seeming furious frenzy, bloodlust in her blue eyes. Samantha should have had more of a chance against the Sneasel, especially once angered...but the Sneasel played dirty, using tricks that no honorable Pokemon would think of using.
Samantha barely escaped from the crazed Sneasel female, finally managing to drag her injured body to the edge of what appeared to be a human settlement of sorts, deep in the forest. She was found, hovering on the edge of consciousness by a man in a white coat. She was too exhausted and too injured to protest as he wrapped her up and took her into one of the buildings.
Weeks passed and the humans in the settlement nursed the Vulpix back to health. She recovered slowly at first, then her recovery seemed to wane. Samantha remained weak, unable to finish the healing process and regain her full strength. Finally, one day, a human female, wearing a white coat like most in the building, came to her with a box. She explained that she had a theory as to why the Vulpix couldn't finish healing. Her strength wasn't enough to fight off an infection that had taken root in her body. However, with a burst of extra energy, her body could possibly make a full recovery. This would require a step to be taken that could never be taken back. Inside the box...was a Fire Stone.
Samantha was no fool...but she was also a fighter. She wanted to live, so without hesitation, she took the plunge, evolving to a beautiful Ninetales. Her recovery began anew, her strength returning and much more over the next few weeks. She began socializing with some of the other Pokemon that seemed to be staying here with the humans. One of which being a cocky Arcanine named Warren. As much as he irritated her, however, she was more irritated at herself for finding herself drawn to spend more and more time with him. He was obnoxious at times, yes...but she got the feeling he acted that way just to make her mad. Then he'd laugh and find some way to calm her down again before she really went over the edge. They played off one another's personalities, both competitive types, with a tendency to push themselves and test their own limits.
Something wasn't quite right, however. Though, it wasn't until some of the other Pokemon started disappearing before they could be sure. The 'settlement' as Samantha had believed it to be wasn't...exactly accurate. The human buildings were actually research facilities, conducting illegal and secretive experiments on Pokemon far from the jurisdiction of the local authorities. The duo was in the middle of planning a mass escape attempt when they were thrown a major curveball. The female scientist that had originally 'saved' Samantha with a Fire Stone came to them in the middle of the night. Without explanation as to why, she stated that they were to leave, tonight, and without alerting anyone. As if reading the Pokemon's minds, she shook her head and explained that she'd do her best to help the other Pokemon. For now, the two fire types would have to trust her and worry about themselves first. Then, she pulled out a small silver chain, a roughly teardrop-shaped green stone hanging at the bottom of it. A chunk of the now-dormant Fire Stone used to save Samantha's life. She hurriedly fastened it around the Ninetales' neck before the human rushed the Pokemon out into the forest in the night.
The two successfully made their escape, hoping that the human would make good on her promise to help the other Pokemon. There was little else they could do at present. For now, the two concentrated on looking after one another. Perhaps, with help, they could one day return to discover the fate of the other Pokemon. Hopefully, they would find nothing.
In traveling together, the fiery pair came across a trainer. A young female, who seemed more interested in being friends with her own Pokemon and drawing others that crossed their paths. Intrigued by this odd human, with time, they decided to approach her, eventually joining her 'team'...though it seemed more like an odd little family... |
