I've heard, from various sources, that many Christians believe that evolution actually can fit with the Bible creation story because
1) The Bible never actually mentions specifically how the world was created, except that it was done by God and that we were made from the dust. Which wouldn't really go against the whole evolution thing anyway because aparently all living things evolved from one single cell found in some primordial ooze. (Ooze is my ancestor! yay!)
2) The Hewbrew word for day "yome" can also apparently mean "suns" or "age" or "eon." So technically, the Bible was mistranslated, and the meaning for the word could actually be, "the world was created in six eons" rather than six days.

Does anyone else have any evidence to support the whole yome theory? Is this even the right word or translation?

YES, I KNOW evolution topics are overplayed, but I'm NOT here to debate whether evolution is true or not, I just want to know your opinion on the yome angle of it all.

Legitimate sources, and trusted sources would be appreciated, ie encyclopedias, reaserch organizations, etc etc

Quotes taken off a site called "Billy Bob's house of things that might be true"
will not be accepted as evidence. lol

If such is the case, I propose that we take a break for the Sabbath every 7th eon. 3nodding

Well, actually, it's the Hebrew word yom, and it changes meaning a lot of times in the Old Testament.

While Answers In Genesis isn't the site I'd like to use as a source (because of the manner in which it's portrayed), they do have a good explanation and some good examples for the uses of yom here.

It also has a funny thing to note:
Quote:
When God refers to a large number, He uses picture stories, such as Abraham's descendants being as numerous as the sand. Why does He do this? If God had said, "You will have millions of descendants," Abraham would have asked, "What is a million?"

I shot him. Just like Ryuu, Lazarus (from the Jesus Freaks guild), and a whole bunch of other people that have left. Ryuu came back from the dead, but I can fix that quickly enough.

crying I don't wanna die again! I just got back!

Anyhow, onto the subject at hand. I'm one of those Christians that believe creation and evolution went hand-in-hand. Looking at how science thinks things showed up on the planet, it corresponds exactly to how the Bible says creation went. Other than my personal opinions on the matter, that's the only real EVIDENCE I have.

I also believe that it took eons for God to create the earth and everything in it. I read through the Bible more figuratively than anything. A "day" is however long it took to progress to the next stage. Which leads into my theory that when the seventh day happened, God rested... and it's still the seventh day. But that's a discussion for another day.

i totaly love all theese theroys and that there are people out there that make theese connections, i think that the 'yome' theroy is totaly possible, after all the Bilbe was translated by humans and we all make mistackes, and it went through several languges, so its total possible that some words were translated wrong.
i also belive that some other things in the Bible line up with scintific things, such as the big bang theroy, it says that the universe was created from one little thing and it was there. well God was that one thing and he said for it to be created and it was there. when the isrealites wandered in the deserts and were supplied witgh manna from heaven, there are trees that grow on the sianai penisula that preduse a sap that dries on the tree bark and when they get to dry they become cake like in texture and let go of the bark and when eaten they taste like honey, hence manna from haven. God did have a hand in everthing that happend and they were all mniricals, but there is also reason behinde them too.

I guess it's an in joke. sweatdrop Yeah, whenever I can't find something or someone, someone always said "I ate it."
Whether it is digestable or not.

Cool, I've never heard of that tree thing before.

I was once in an ancient and midieval history class where my professor showed up how the splitting of the river with Moses could have happened. There was this odd combination of underwater volcanoes and earthquakes and such along the nearest plates, which pulled the waters apart. You'll find that a lot of the more "natural"-based miracles are explainable... it's just that they happen at exactly the right TIME that's the miracle. xd

cool. i havent herd that about Moses. that seems really interesting, but i agree with you lots of the 'natutal' miricals cand be explaind with science and i think that it is really fasinating.

However, the major flaw in those ideas is that they are all coincidences. Every single one. All of the millions of billions of answered prayers are coincidences, all of the miricles of Jesus and the prophets are coincidences, and all of the things that match up with what the Bible said (mostly w/ archeology) are coincidences. All of them. EVERY LAST ONE. rolleyes
