before, i have tried to put a tampon in because i was tired of pads. many times i have failed because either i get scared it will hurt or its in the wrong place. my sister has tried to put it in once or twice for me, it was halfway in and it barely hurt and i pulled her away. is it normal for it to hurt when it goes in? i asked other people and they said it isn't normal for it to hurt.

If you put the tampon in correctly, it will not hurt. If it is put in incorrectly, however, it can be very uncomfortable.
Tampons take practice. You're not abnormal if you don't get the hang of it right away. Keep trying. If you practice when you have your period, it can be messy. However, if you practice when you do not have your period, it can be difficult and uncomfortable because your v****a will be drier. So if you want to practice when you do not have your period, it would probably be best to try when you are in the mood, or right after you masturbate so that your v****a is well lubricated.
If you don't get the tampon in far enough, it can feel strange. If it is in all the way, you should not be able to feel it. So some women give the tampon an extra push with their finger after they remove the applicator to make sure it is far enough in. You do not have to worry about the tampon going in too far and getting lost in your body. Make sure some of the string is left hanging out though.

when I first tried my first tampons I had a bit of the same trouble too.
Best thing to do is first find a position that is comfy for you and makes you feel relaxed. Being nervous can make it harder to slide the tampon in as you unconsciously tighten the muscles. Another thing I found helpful, that may seem silly but helped me the first few times, was to use a mirror to see where exactly I was putting it and to make sure I placing it in the right spot. Another thing is what direction you're using with your hand. Pushing in the wrong direction can be discomforting. Sometimes it's just a matter of re-angling your hand and then it slides in easy, like bringing you hand forward or backwards slightly.
key, try to be relaxed and feel confident that it'll go in. positive thinking can do wonders smile

I've been having my period since January 2005. I tried using a tampon once in the summer of 2007, it didn't work at all, I couldn't get it in. It felt a if there was something blocking it. Nearly the end of 2007 I started putting my fingers in, once I got comfortable with that I decided to try a tampon again today. Seeing as I got my period yesterday. I tried with one leg up on the tub, didn't work. I was shaking too much, I was nervous =S So may sound weird but I layed down with my legs spread. I got a mirror to help me see better, I tried to get it in, but it didn't go. It felt I was pushing too hard for it to go in. So I just stopped for a second, took a deep breath, relaxed and once it started going in I looked away from the mirror (That helped too) once it was mostly in I looked back at the mirror, so doing all that helped me. Although afterwards about 10 minutes after wearing the tampon I could feel it as I walked. It didn't hurt but it felt strange. So I'm guessing I didn't put it in far enough.
I guess practice makes perfect.
Update, Jan 13. - Practice does make perfect. I wore a pad to bed, and in the morning I put a tampon in, it was actually harder then yesterday to get it in. But once I got it in it was in good, I didn't feel it this time. I took it out about 5 1/2 hours later. And when I went to put a new one in it wouldn't go, maybe because the other two times I had enough blood for it to slip in. But when I tried to put in a new one today it hurt a bit and just wouldn't go in. I problably finally got in in half way, but I tried over again and in many different positions and relaxed, but still nothing. So I just used a pad lol
So practice makes perfect..... why do the stupid things have to be so complicated stare
Mom was saying today as well she has the same problem at times, she can't get them it because she's too dry. So next time you try a tampon you should wear a pad for a while first, having the blood already on the outside makes the tampon slip in better.
