so my fine feathered friends, what are your opinions of the emergent church movement?

in case you don't know, in short the emergent church is a new movement within Protestant Christianity that seeks to throw off evangelicism in favor of a more postmodern Christianity. some of the ideas within the movement (which isn't across the board, as Emergent can refer to people sharing the same ministry viewpoint) include reading the Bible with significance placed on the reader's, rather than the writer's, social context (also known as postmodern hermaneutics), non-critical interfaith dialog, and an emphasis placed on social justice.

thoughts?

Heresies!
Blasphemies!
Lies:
Sorry... I just like those words.
So... it's another sect of the same religion that persecutes people who don't believe?

Or am I making another one of my standing logical long-jumps?
Again...

I sorry, Burnie.
I like the idea of no more evangelists. That means less people shoving things down my throat. I have always felt that people should just believe or not.
Something that has bothered me for a while is the understanding of the Bible. I don't care what your social standing is... the bible is what it is. Don't try to twist it around to fit your bigoted views. (not any person in particular)
Social justice. Kinda an interesting term, no? Sounds like vigilantism to me. Like someone taking it upon themselves to dole out justice like some tattooed army cook.

well, the emergent church still believes in evangelizing, however they think that it should be restricted to being good witnesses, ie. loving your neighbor and all that.

just a quick note. evangelicals are a brand of Christians who are more conservative. evangelicism is a word i made up.

that's the point of traditional hermeneutics, which seeks to understand the original intention of the authors by analyzing what they've said in other contexts, their social background, and their general cultural surroundings.

plus, while some Christians don't practice it, an important rule of thumb for most of us is to not let our doctrine shape the way we read the Bible, but let the other way around occur. that's called exegesis, which is getting meaning out of the text rather than putting meaning into it.

I don't consider that evengelizing. That's more of a passive spreading...
I suppose, kinda like a disease, but I'm not allowed to make fun...

See, I like that. It makes far more sense. Don't give the book any more meaning than was originally intended.
IE, don't make s**t up!
