“Lillian….Do you think we could actually go into the store? It’s too cold to just stand outside and look at it…” Tyson shivered after his words as another gust of chilly wind blew past them with a roaring howl. What a cold and blustery day it had turned out to be! Thankfully they had ridden in the ferry to get to the mainland and then road in a cab to get to Durem. If they hadn’t, the boy was sure he’d be halfway across the globe by now being carried by the powerful gale of wind.

The shop called the Sistine had become the new talk of their schools over the past few weeks after a couple of kids discovered it on a walk. It was only until now that Lillian decided to take the two of them to go and look around the place. But now that they had finally gotten around to it, Tyson couldn’t seem to get his sister to go inside.

Like any shopping day, before they had even reached the front steps of the store Lillian had told him the usual rules to be on his best behavior and not to break anything. The tyke had agreed to them both, like he always did. So why wouldn’t she move?!

“Lil! Let’s go inside now, puh-lease!”
Tyson cried after the bubbling bile that was his frustration began to boil. He wanted to go in NOW. He had made up his mind, and that meant that he was going to get some candy and see those fish tanks with the weird animals inside of it if it was the last thing he’d do!

The candy shop, with it’s beautiful carvings and colorfully decorated front windows looked like such a welcoming place to the shivering duo.

Finally the teenager opened up the door and the entry bell jingled in welcome. Tyson quickly hurried into the proclaimed candy shop when the chance was given and didn’t look back. There was so much to see! So much to try! So much to…

Tyson stopped dead in his tracks when he saw what was inside the fish tanks. His buddies at school had said the things looked weird, and now that he was seeing them up close they looked just like aliens from the comic book Master Ray!

“What ARE those?” Tyson hissed to Lillian after she had come to stand behind him. The creatures inside the fish tanks looked similar to a candy ribbon, while the way they moved Tyson imagined would be similar to how a flying carpet would fly through the sky. To put it simply, these things were amazing!

"I don't know...maybe the guy who runs this place can tell us. We just need to find him." Lillian straightened herself up and folded her arms over her chest as her eyes got to the job of looking around. The guy (or gal) who ran the place had to be around somewhere...but where?

In the back room Alice whistled to himself. He had that New Orleans song stuck in his head again, wasnt that just the story of his life? He chuckled into his shoulder, unwilling to get yet another faceful of powdered sugar just because irony had tickled his funny bone.

On the table, the delicately limbed sugared angel smiled back at him, her soft, spun candy hair pinned back by several sweetened flowers. He brushed the stray dust carefully, letting it settle about her pale skin and take the glimmer from the light. She stood serenely, arms wrapped close about herself, cradling the small, naked baby to her breast. Both their eyes were closed. He'd never figured out a good way to do open eyes and still leave them edible.

The tall, sandy haired man frowned for a moment, considering the riddle for the 700th time. Then turned as the store bell chimed. Oh oh. Best not to be dawdling back here for much longer.

Setting the brush and knife down carefully he patted at his front, sending a spray of sugar into the air like startled birds. Ack- don't beathe, Alice. You'll be wired for a week.

Satisfied that he wouldnt track too much backstage, upstage, the candy man poked his head around the corner of the kitchens- and the sight made him grin.

There was a boy gazing in on the nudibranchs. He seemed to be enjoying himself, and that always made the ex-cop swell with a bit of pride. His babies were certainly beautiful. It was nice when people noticed.

Oh! And a girl behind him.

Alice cocked his head, looking them over. There had been an influx of new children the past few weeks. That was nice. New business- if he ever stopped giving things away, of course. These two he was pretty sure he'd never seen before. No parents though- maybe in on the way back from school? It was after 3... right?

"Those are glossodoris-atromarginata," He said, leaning on the counter. "In that tank. Sponge eaters. Cute aren't they?"

Tyson and Lillian both jumped at the voice and turned simultaneously to look at the speaker. The duo wore a matching pair of wide eyes that gave the impression they had just seen a ghost. A minute passed and they lost the ghoulish look yet as Tyson smiled in greeting, Lillian looked rather skeptical of the man. Afterall, he had seemed to just pop out of no where. He could be an employee of the candy shop or he could be some creep who knew about aquarium pets.

“They are pretty cute. Not like a dog or a cat, but in a different kind of way. Does that make sense?” Tyson asked the man as he placed one of his fingers against the glass and followed the colorful creature’s swimming course.

Lillian looked to her brother and held back a sigh. No matter how many times she told him that it was dangerous to talk to strangers he still went against her warnings. Tyson was oblivious to her stare though and kept watching the mystical being swim through its undersea home.

“Do you work here?” She asked once her eyes focused on Alice. He certainly didn’t look like your typical candy maker.

"Not very often." He chuckled, ruffling the silvery gleam out of his wheat-brown hair. "Mostly I just play around. Name's Alice. And who might you two be?"

The man was entirely out of place among the ornate woodworking and colorful painting. He wore a plain red t-shirt, a white apron, and about a cup and a half of powdered sugar. And while the sugar implied he did belong behind the counter, the line-backer shoulders contradicted it sorely.

Grinning at Tyson the brunet pointed to one of the tanks farther down the wall. "My favorite is Helios over there. He's a spanish dancer."

“Ah….” Even with his calm introduction and sweet face Lillian still took a step back as a precautionary. “Um….” By the sound of her withdrawal of the short conversation, the teenager didn’t seem like she was too fond of giving him their names. Although who said she had to be the one to tell him?

Tyson had already made his way down to see the dancer Alice was talking about. But that didn’t stop him from talking to the man. “I’m Tyson!” The youth replied as he looked over his shoulder to flash the man a bright smile. “That’s my sister, Lillian. Don’t worry about her sourness, she just has the permanent taste of lemon in her mouth.” He joked as he leaned closer to the tank so he could get a better look at Helios.

Lillian made a disgruntled noise to the side but the boy paid no mind to it. He was too enthralled with watching the creatures inside the tank to care. “He looks like some sort of alien…” Hissed Ty as if he was afraid the creature would hear him on the other side of the glass. “Where did you get him?”

"A lemon, h-uh?" The candyman shook his head, straitening up. "Well I guess this is the best place for getting a sour taste out of your mouth, right? Nice to meet both of you." He turned, sliding one of the polished doors behind the counter open, searching over the displays for something appropriate. "Helios came to live with me from the Red Sea. I worried about him initially, but he seems pretty satisfied with that tank, so I guess he's alright."

Alice paused, peeping over the counter. "He likes to kiss the glass to say hello." For a moment he vanished almost completely, bending down with great care to retrieve the tiny, white-chocolate bouquet from where it sat among other, more vibrantly colored flowers. Prize secured, he rose to his feet with a protesting creak from his bad knee.

"There we are," he said, setting the delicate sweet on the hardwood before him. it was roughly quarter-sized, a slim, fluert-styled vase filled with small, long stemmed flowers rendered in sugar and milk. The white lilies rose above the clusters of littler, daisy-like flowers, striped with pale pinks and yellows.

Tyson listened intently to what Alice was saying and he noted the sea that the other spoke of. Their parents had gone there plenty of times and they had brought back various fish and exotic loot. What really got his attention was what Alice said about Helios before he crouched low to retrieve the object.

“Really?!” The youth cried with a great deal of enthusiasm. Of course such news would drive the lad to press his face against the glass in hopes of receiving a kiss from such a peculiar creature.

Lillian stared in fright at her younger brother’s foolish actions. Yet she voiced no warning, no complaint, nothing. The young woman just stood and turned her attention onto the man as he dipped under the counter. No sooner had he vanished did he reappear again with the most beautiful bouquet. Yet this was a candy shop, why would he sell flowers?

“I have never seen those kinds before…do you grow them yourself?” Lillian asked as she drew closer to where Alice stood. Her eyes had left the large man to rest upon the flowers in the vase. They were beautiful. Clearly she did not realize that they were made of chocolate, vanilla, and loads of sugar. They looked too real to be candy.

"I guess you could say that." He laughed brightly, sliding the case door closed. "They're sugar lilies. Edible, if you like."

In the tank the Spanish Dancer twirled lazily, attention caught by the change in light. It rose a bit, ruffling it's way to the side of the aquarium, flattening against the glass like a particularly pancake-shaped sucker-fish.

Alice chuckled, watching. The boys on the force had poked fun at him when he retired, opening a candy shop, he supposed, wasn't the most dignified way to bow out of the law. But it was worth it more often than it wasn't.
