I dont know if its a tip, but my strategy was always picking charmander, since the only thing you have to really grind level for is misty's gym. After that you can kick butttt

But, you can pick from three starters, right?
Misty's gym is the water type, and if I am not mistaken, she has a staryu and a starmie, which Starmie also has the psychic ability. For her gym, I would choose Pikachu that you can find in the Veridian forest just before having to take on Brock's gym.
Pikachu may be a rare in that, but I found that there was a lot of copycat from the new Kalos region's initial must-cross forest to this game. In Kalos its much easier to catch pikachu in the forest of the bugs and elemental monkeys.
The difference is you cannot catch the elemental monkeys or a scatterbug in the Veridian forest, otherwise, its exactly the same including the route to get out of the forest.

I'm not sure if this is strategy or whatever guess you could call it advice... SAVE THE MASTERBALL once you beat the game you can go to Cerulian Cave and capture Mewtwo there. Also once you obtain the EXP share keep it with you at all times, once you've gotten past victory road you can heal your pokemon inside the Pokemon League building DO SO then buy A LOT of Escape Ropes, NOT REPELS but escape ropes then go back to Victory Road and carry with you 5 of your strongest pokemon the 6th pokemon you should have is one you need to level up and evolve that will make the process of completing the pokedex through evolution a lot easier, that's really all I can say OH and when you're pokemon are all low on health use the escape rope and you'll be able to go heal them faster and it's better for them then constantly max potions and max elixer and max revive plus it's cheaper on you if you do it like this,... Hope it helps
PS Gold Teeth and the Safari Zone you'll need to get through the entire Safari zone to be able to complete the game, plus you can catch scyther and chansey there.

I probably would be picking Charmander the entire time if I had the same time as you guys, but I got so attached to Bulbasaur I can't pick anything else XD
Uh... strategies... yeah, seriously, save the Master Ball. Use it on something worthwhile, like Mewtwo I guess.
OH, just remembered. I think I heard something about being able to have all the starters after you finish the game? There's another place or something you can go which will have the two starters you didn't get/all of the starters or something?

Actually that's a myth the only way to do that is hack the game and go into the blocked off tall grass that's to the left and right sides of Pallet Town
