I realize there are a lot of people in our guild who support UFC style Mixed Martial arts, BJJ with Muay Thai. I've noticed that a lot of the competitors in Pride fighting used other styles besides the original two. Some semi traditional arts such as Tae Kwon Do and Judo have made their way into the Octagon. My question here is what will more traditional martial arts do to conform with the new rage of mixed martial arts? This is mostly in regard to things like Judo which are mainly for throwing possibly gaining aspects of striking or ground game.

I certainly hope that Tae Kwon Do gets more of it's original Hapkido aspects, as the two are better together I think.

What exactly is wrong with discussing this? This is an a new trend in martial arts, and finding out if anyone has been effected by this at all. If you haven't seen anything different, so be it. Don't comment on this one. I was especially hoping to hear from your perspective, but if you don't have anything to say, on it thought just opt out.

I suppose what I'm asking is if anyone has seen any changes in training, rhetoric, or strategy because of MMA. I know whenever my Gwajangnim(Grand Master) hears MMA mentioned, he calls it garbage and says martial arts isn't for messing around like that.

Yes some tma are changing and no i don't think its good. most martial arts are designed to kill or incompasitate a person so that they are no longer a threat. mma teaches alot of mutated techniques so that they are either safer or less damaging. some tma teach wrist breaking, gouging, scratching, high pressure strikes with little surface area (tsumisaki-tip of toe, or ipponken-finger sword) joint strikes to immediately disable, neck and spinal dislocations; all of which are illegal to use in mma. They are useful and valid techniques for fighting to save your life or for martial use.
MMA has changed the mindset of prospective students, and i think that is most damaging to martial arts as a whole. just because bass ruten or the gracies don't use say tajichuan doesnt mean its not a valid art.

I also think the new influx of shows like human weapon and fight quest are kind of a rebound t the MMA spirit from a TMA spirit. only problem is they use stupid people no one likes as the hosts.
Here is my idea for a show. take someone who knows a martial art say TKD for instance. Set it up so that he can train across the world in TKD and hapkido dojos with true masters and historical places. Follow them for say 6 months with them living and training with the groups. In the end then you test em in what ever medium you want say for TKD an official high level competition.

That's a really good idea actually. Instead of going so aimlessly from form to form, they should focus on one more carefully.

Sorry, a little off topic here:
I recently watched a MMA comp on TV and I was severly disappointed in it. It was just wrestling. Fair enough they threw in a couple of kicks, but once the guy was in close enough to his opponant, he'd wrestle him to the floor and then jump on top to make sure he can't get back up.
I was looking forward to an actual martial arts fight, not a slow wrestling match. I watched about three rounds and then changed the channel.
Is that what it's usually like or did I just happen to stumble upon one of those once off occasions?

Soul Fighters Leg Kicks MMA isn;t for everybody and TMA isn't for everybody like fat people lol. And when I mean fat, I mean those fat people who think they can do martial arts but can't and everyone else just humors them. ... But back to subject: I think MMA will have an effect on TMA in the media coverage or personal expectations. People who watch MMA from shows like UFC, PRIDE, or IFL will probably want to learn how to fight like that; and when they learn from a TMA instructor, their expectations aren't completely fulfilled because they want to learn the grappling and other ground fighting techniques. This will lead to TMA becoming less popular as there are now actual gyms that are starting to teach the MMA that is seen on t.v... ... In other news: Tom Brady got sacked at the Superbowl.
