The boy standing in front of the tall, ornate building wasn't quite a boy, but neither was he a man. Yet. His head was tilted slightly as he continued to study the front door to the home of the .NET hackers with the utmost attention. Once or twice, from behind that pair of mirrored shades his eyes roamed, looking with doubt at the dirty and rather beaten down look of the surroundings. There was a rather heavy-looking book bag on his back, and from his youth, it was easy to figure out that whoever this young man was, he was a college student.
"Hackers." The youth mouthed the word, letting it roll out softly into the air. It sounded right - what else could've stolen his data? His arm rose slowly, and when it fell his hand carried the shades away in a graceful descent. It revealed a pair of bright green eyes which seemed to glow against the tan of his skin and the darkness of his hair. They were puzzled and hesitant - Yuelong Quan was a shy boy, after all.
That morning he had risen at precisely 6:30 a.m. to finish his semester synopsis. For months, he had slaved over the baby that would give him the grade he needed to earn a smile, or some display of pride, from his father. Imagine his surprise when he found that more than half of the files were gone [thank goodness he had thought of saving them in individual documents] were simply gone, and his amazement as he watched with his lips shaped in an almost perfect 'o' another piece of data simply disappeared off of the screen. Thank goodness he had thought of salvaging what little files that remained by quickly transferring copies of them, along with all of his most important documents, unto an external hard drive. It didn't stop him from panicking though, as he was utterly clueless as far as why those digitalized information were disappearing off into oblivion. He needed answers, and he needed them fast. After looking around on the internet and confiding in his closest circle of friends, he ended up with the address and phone number of this place in his hands.
I hope they will be able to help me retrieve those files. He thought anxiously as he finally moved out of the sunlight and into the blissful shade beyond those doors, tucking his sunglasses away neatly into his pocket. As he entered, cooler breezes tugged at the loosened collar of his button-up shirt and gently caressed his sun-warmed cheeks. A dark shirt with some sort of mascot peered out at the top and the bottom. Yue’s hands were tucked casually into the pockets of his khaki shorts then – they were, however, sweating profusely at that moment. Whether it was due to the humidity outside, or perhaps his nervousness, the cause was not clear. “Hello?” He called out tentatively, looking a bit unsure and lost as he turned about, seeking someone. Someone alive and human, he thought as his gaze strayed past the sentinel-like robots stationed about the room. Unless … this place is owned by robots?!

The tall man with two feathers in his ponytail glanced up as he heard someone's voice ring out over the shining floor. Quirking his head to one side, he quickly glanced over at his computer's monitor, bringing up the day's schedule and scanning it rapidly. With a smile as he noticed that the boy had arrived for his appointment, and perfectly on schedule, Fiach stood up to greet him. Quickly tugging his shirt straight as he stepped to one side of his desk, he moved forward to introduce himself.
With a pleasant smile on his face, Fiach extended one hand and quietly lilted, "My name is Fiach. How may I help you today?" Even though it was a scheduled appointment, Fiach still gave the same spiel every time. It was a comfortable routine, and helped him gradually get accustomed to the people he met.
Glancing up at one of the many computer screens that seemed to be the store's decor, he was relieved to note that Li'tae had not yet made an appearance. Perhaps they'd luck out, and the troublesome hacker wouldn't make an appearance today. The last time he'd tried to help out, Fiach had ended the meeting wanting to run for cover. Returning his attention to the boy, he fervently hoped that this meeting wouldn't end in the same manner.

At the sound of movement Yue quickly turned, and gave the man greeting him with one of his signature smiles in return. His eyes, for the briefest moment, lingered on the two feathers in Fiach's pony tail. Odd choice of an accessory, but this youth was not one that liked to ask personal questions. This was a free world after all. There was enough hesitance there had Fiach bothered to take note, but quickly his gaze darted back for the stranger's face.
"Yuelong," he returned quietly as he withdrew one of his sweaty hands from his pocket, quickly dried it with a wipe on his shirt, and took Fiach's offered hand with a firm but measured grasp. "I called earlier today - I was panicking a great deal then, so my problem may not have been very clear." At this a light rouge began to spread across his cheeks, visible even under his tan.
"I just hope you can help me deal with it. It's ... a rather mysterious phenomenon. I woke up this morning to work on my semester paper, but over the night some files have disappeared. I thought I might have displaced them, so I conducted a thorough search - there wasn't even a trace of those files anywhere." Yue sighed heavily and began to take-off his backpack. "I saved my more important files and watched my laptop for a good hour - more data disappeared. At first I thought that maybe someone had hacked into my computer over the internet, but I had disconnected my laptop from the network before going to bed last night, so that would've been impossible."
"Anyways, do you have an outlet anywhere?" He took his laptop out of the backpack, a somewhat desperate look on his face as he spoke. "I was hoping that you would be able to check it out. I've heard some stuff about these ... strange creatures that roam the web, but I didn't believe any of it. It's a little too bizarre, the idea of sentiment creatures composed of pure digital data." For a moment, he bit down on his lips and seemed to debate with himself about something. When he spoke again, it was definitely with anxiety and reluctance - approach avoidance syndrome, almost. "Would it be possible for you to help me recover my files?"
Am I talking too much?

A soft, barely audible sigh escaped Fiach's mouth as he noted the short, but lingering gaze on the feathers on his pony tail. Suddenly self conscious about them, he fidgeted slightly, resisting the urge to reach up and pull his hair free from its pony tail. Hoping the boy would not ask any questions, he smiled with relief as the attention was returned to his face. Although he'd much prefer to not have to make constant eye contact...it was better than having to fret over what questions might be asked of him.
Nodding as his eyes lit with sudden recognition, Fiach gave a genuine smile, "Ah, I remember your call! I got the jist of it, but not all of the details..." Though the boy had talked quickly from his concern, Fiach had gotten out of it that files were disappearing mysteriously...enough that he was sure something was wrong with his laptop. It sounded like a typical case of a Hacker egg looking for a meal to grow, but he could never be sure without actually looking at the computer and finding the egg.
Smiling patiently as the boy reiterated the situation, Fiach glanced around at the shop's many monitors and hook up spots. Amused that the boy hadn't seen one of the many outlets when he walked in, Fiach gently gestured towards the nearest one. Nodding towards it, he lilted quietly, "If you'd like, you can plug your laptop in over there. I can check for any problems it might have once its booted up."
Tilting his head slightly in that acquired habit from Adalia, a small smile touched his lips. So many people didn't actually believe in the AI that were Hackers, even though his shop stood tall in the midst of the city. With a small laugh, he said, "The Hackers? They're real, and they do learn quite a bit from us every day."
A little too much sometimes, I think...
With a polite nod at the boy's final question, he shrugged, "If there's a Hacker on there, we can certainly ask them. Otherwise...I can ask Sionce to try a data recovery on your laptop, if you'd like." If Sionce would talk to him long enough to accept the job, that was.

Realizing that he must've been staring, Yue quickly made busy by looking around at the different robots. They were ... interesting, really. In the end, though, his eyes dragged back to Fiach's face anyways. It was a bad habit - if he didn't look at the people that he was talking to often enough, he lost focus. His shyness made it easy for him to appear flustered, and he had discovered a long time ago, somehow, by looking into the speaker's eyes he could feel more comfortable.
Even sometimes at the obvious discomfort of the others. So he compromised.
Suddenly realizing the obvious answer to his previous answer as he caught sight of not one, not two, but three outlets just within his sight. He laughed nervously as an even darker red flushed across his face. "How embarassing..." He muttered to himself with an apologetic grin at Fiach. "Thank you for pointing it out." Quickly he stepped towards the nearest one and plugged in his laptop, deftly handling the equipment. As soon as the log in screen blinked on, he quickly keyed in the password with a chorus of soft 'clack's.
"Here you go," Yue said over the welcome music of the system, turning the device around on the table so the screen faced Fiach. "Sionce?" His eyes were puzzled as he spoke the unfamiliar name. Then realization washed over him and he grinned shyly, "A Hacker."
Quickly, then, he frowned again. "So if there is a Hacker... does that mean the files are gone... forever? Is that why they're called Hackers... they steal files?"

Watching the boy's eyes wander around at the robots and other high tech gadgetry that seemed to have fast become the shop's primary decor, he kept silent. He didn't really know how to explain half of what was in there, some of it coming from Leharl's travels, others being things that had been dropped off for repairs - ones Fiach wasn't even certain the shop could actually make at this time. Though he hated turning anyone down and explained he wasn't positive they could solve the problem, that they'd certainly do their best before returning the item.
Waving a hand as if to say 'its not a problem' when the boy blushed, Fiach gave him a gentle smile, before politely responding, "Don't worry about it, I know there are quite a few distractions about this shop, and outlets are small, anyway..." He really wasn't that good at consoling people, but he did his best, or at least tried to anyway.
Following Yue over to the table, he waited patiently as the laptop turned on, bending over it as soon as Yue turned it towards him. Frowning even as he did so, he realized he didn't really have a clue where to start. Clicking around to locate the text files that had been previously disappearing, he watched and waited to see if the egg would make its appearance - or at least an additional file would disappear.
Glancing back up at the mention of Sionce, Fiach gave a soft shake of his head. Smiling ruefully he laughed, "No...Sionce is my co-worker at this shop. He's an incredible tech wizard, but not a Hacker." Though I don't doubt that he often wishes he was one...
Scratching at the back of his head as he returned to his full height, Fiach blushed slightly, feeling awkward at the fact that he had no straight answer for the customer. Some hackers returned data, others didn't. "I...well. It sort of depends on the Hacker, I'm afraid...If you ask politely, they might return your data. But there's no guarantee..." Pausing with a frown, he wondered if there was a way to forcibly retrieve data once eaten by a Hacker. If anyone could, it was likely to be..."Sionce might be able to retrieve the files if the Hacker won't return them. So if it won't, we'll give him a call, all right?"
Smiling in a reassuring manner, he pondered over the last question. In all honesty, Leharl hadn't really quite told him why the Hackers were called Hackers, though he had his guesses. If only for the fact that they mysteriously appeared on computers as if they'd been hacked. With a shake of his head, he grinned, "No...I think they're called Hackers because they seem to enjoy hacking computers. They appear at random on devices, and most people wind up thinking they were hacked. They don't necessarily steal the files...they eat them. Its how they survive and grow."
Biting his lower lip, he hoped this wouldn't end up with another angry customer. He hated dealing with them when they got angry...

"Oh," Yue stopped a moment to think what he said over again. Why did he assume that Sionce was a Hacker? He wasn't sure. Sometimes the brain really did work in very mysterious ways. "Wow. Haha... I'm not even sure why I suggested that he... would be one. I guess I somehow imagined that the Hackers communicated to each other like ... us. And Sionce would be able to coax something out of a fellow AI." At that the young man stopped and shook his head is disbelieve. He was being very silly, and he blame it on the nerves.
He noted the blush on Fiach's face and patiently listened as the man answered his questions, or tried his best to, anyways. He rested his cheek in one palm as he looked, a relieved look spreading out on his face as Fiach paused. "Thank goodness," he breathed. The words were muttered very softly, but then again, it wasn't very loud in this shop either.
"So they have personalities, and they, despite being AIs, need to ‘feed’ on data.” He said, his eyes half closed almost if mesmerized. Sounds like they just enjoy … wreaking havoc in other people’s lives. He thought, and the corners of his lips twitched. “So if they eat the files, how are we supposed to get them back?” Yue leaned back into the chair, eyes wide open once again and this time with some alarm.
Wonderful, just wonderful. He thought and almost sighed, but restrained himself from doing so – this man looked… a bit flustered. Yue was a nice boy… though he was more disappointed than anything else at the fact that it’s more than likely his files will not be able to be retrieved. He frowned slightly, but then he smiled again at Fiach. “Found anything yet?” He pointed at the laptop.
“And sorry if I’m asking too many questions… I’m just – “ Yue paused slightly, “-confused. Electronics isn’t exactly my fort, and the concept of these AIs… it’s a little … daunting, almost. I’m guessing that they can’t be removed like virus and Trojans… and any sort of documents saved on the hard drive would need to be transferred elsewhere if I intend for them to last."

And just like that, Fiach began to feel bad for laughing when he'd responded that Sionce was human, and not a hacker. He really was terrible at customer service, and he made a note to himself to either figure out just how Adalia did it...or start letting her handle more customers. "No, no, its okay!" Waving his hands, Fiach tried to make Yue feel less like it was a mistake, "I didn't specify if he was a Hacker or not, and...well...our shop is called .NET Hackers, so its only logical that you assumed..."
With a sigh, Fiach realized he was nervous again, and rambling at that. Rubbing the back of his head out of habit, he sighed at his behavior, before returning his attention to Yue. He'd have time to kick himself for poor service later, after the poor boy had left.
Nodding, Fiach confirmed most of what Yue said, "Hackers don't really...digest the files they eat. I think its more that they store them inside of their AI units, than actually eat them. Sort of a learning process, perhaps?" Again, Fiach wanted to kick himself for his lack of knowledge. Filing it away in his brain, he made note to find a way to either contact Leharl about this question, or see if perhaps Sionce could find out. Maybe Trisste would know...
Tilting his head curiously as a pale egg seemed to fade into the screen partially before it disappeared again, Fiach gave a small nod. Watching intently for the egg to appear again, he nodded towards the screen, "I believe you have a Hacker - a very palely colored one, at that." Blue eyes glued to the screen, he shook his head, "You're not asking too many questions, I don't think there's even such a thing as that. So please don't worry."
With a grin as the Hacker egg made a more visible and noticeable appearance, floating gently in the middle of the screen, Fiach stood up and stretched his back. Waving one hand at the screen, he smiled, "That's your Hacker, and no, I'm afraid that they can't be removed like viruses or Trojans. Although, if you simply tell the Hacker which files you don't want it to eat...or even create it a folder of food to eat on its own, you'll be able to keep all of your files saved on your own computer, without worry." Glancing between the Hacker and the boy, he wondered how their relationship would be. If Yue thought they were bad things, to be removed...it might not work out too well. He was always nervous for the Hacker's welfare when a potential owner didn't seem to show much interest - or pleasure - at the thought of having one, though he felt that this boy would handle the news better than Brad had.

So this was what happened when he met someone that was just like him - a little shy, a little afraid of the words waiting to be spoken because they might hurt in someway, a little guilty, perhaps, every time they happened to make a mistake. Maybe I'm just socially inept. Yue thought, and almost sighed as an image of his outgoing brother crossed his mind. They would've been twins had the two of them been born in the same year, only there was a ... flair to the way that Thomas walked through life. Fiach's sigh brought the youth back to the present, and he was about to reach up and ruffle his own dark locks when he noticed Fiach doing almost the exact same thing and chuckled softly.
"You know..." Yue began, his cheek resting against his left palm as his right hand picked at the fraying strings of the old shell bracelet. "It's okay, really, if you're fretting. Er, I mean, if you're, uh, like me, and isn't very good with talking to people - well, no, I mean... I mean, I'm sure you're spectacular at talking with people, but if you're worried that I'm judging you or something... I'm not. You have that look. My friends say I get that look, and I didn't ever think I'd recognize it." There was a soft sigh, and Yue tilted his head slightly to rest it against his shoulder. His green eyes were looking up at the ceiling when he spoke again. "That mental self-berating face."
Done with that bit, and a little embarrassed, the college student sat back up and tried to look a little less self-conscious. "That's really quietly interesting, though. Do they process the data that they eat?" He asked quietly, his eyes following the movement of the egg on his screen. Oh wait, questions again. "Never mind... I guess I could ask the Hacker, once it hatches from the egg - just thought that it might become a very handy biology guru if it did." Yue shook his head with a smile, and then something else occurred to him. "Would that take a very long time... for it to hatch, I mean? And what happens exactly after it's born...? Does it age and grow or shift shapes? And, one last question." He paused as he has bombarded Fiach with yet another round of questions. "What is my role exactly in all of this, I mean, aside from providing its grub and home and everything?"
He had realized some moments go, though he was not sure exactly when, that he was responsible for the welfare of his Hacker. It was like an animal, only... digital. No mess to clean up after, at least. I guess I should be glad for that. Yet from the way Fiach had described these creatures, they sounded like very remote and independent beings. Yue also guessed that there were a lot of Hackers on the net, roaming, finding homes in hard drives across the globe. So there must be some sort of society then, for these Hackers. I wonder where they came from. Who was the one that created these little critters? Probably some sort of computer wiz…

Maybe it was time he finally broke down and asked Adalia how she seemed to have such an easy time managing customers. Or maybe even Trisste would have an idea of how to handle people, he always seemed so calm...Though, he'd have to catch Trisste on a good day. He didn't think the Hacker particularly liked him, though he didn't know why. As the owner of the shop, he felt horrible each time he seemed to let a customer down, or didn't have sufficient answers to supply them with. Shaking his head softly as the youth chuckled, he gave a small frown, thinking he may have missed something in his musings until the boy spoke up.
A faint splash of pink colored Fiach's cheeks at the boy's words. Did he really look that embarrassed? Fiddling idly with the penny whistle he often wore about his neck out of nervous habit, a small laugh issued from his mouth. It appeared he'd met his match, and that eased his nervousness just a bit. With a small smile, he shook his head, "I...well. Its a little of both. I guess. I feel like I'm letting you down if I can't answer all your questions, and that makes me feel bad..." As his smile turned into an outright grin, he added, "I'm not too worried about you judging me...I do have two feathers in my hair, after all!" It was a lame attempt at a joke, and he felt silly for tossing it out there like that. Fiach was really going to have to work on the whole humor thing as it seemed to him that his jokes kept getting lamer...and lamer.
Giving Yue an easy, friendly smile when he saw the boy's own discomfort, he gave a small shrug, "I have to be honest...I don't really know what they do with the data. We'd likely have to ask one of them to find out." After a short, distracted pause, Fiach continued with a small frown, "And I'm afraid I don't have a Hacker to ask, so you'll just have to ask yours when it hatches...Sorry." Again, Fiach felt like he was floundering about, his nervous hand moved to tap at his chin in thought as he mused over the next set of questions.
With a smile, Fiach tried to answer each question as well as he could, "How long they take to hatch varies, though I think usually its about a week or two after discovery. After the Hacker is born, they tend to eat more data, and develop personalities. They learn things quickly, especially things related to technology, so they might become a handful for you. Some Hackers also have pretty hefty attitudes...so I guess just be ready for anything. They age and go through 3 forms after the egg...similar to how we grow - child, adult, and elder." Blinking a couple of times at the last question asked in the set, Fiach mulled over it as his hand stroked his chin in thought, again the abstract fact that he ought to shave again played into his brain, before he finally gave a short nod and answered the question.
"Basically...you're the parent and friend of the Hacker. They're AI and were made to learn from us - so just be there for it." It was an odd answer, but it was the only thing Fiach could think of. The Hackers seemed to think and feel as readily as any human, and it was the same advice he'd give any human in dealing with a friend, 'just be there for them'.
Tilting his head slightly, he opened his mouth one last time, "Are there any other questions you can think of?" He didn't mind answer questions all day, he was just afraid he'd run out of answers before Yue ran out of questions..

Yue laughed at Fiach's attempt - it was a... fair try at humor, and he did seem pretty genuine as the corners of his eyes crinkled into familiar laugh lines and a slightly crooked grin tugged at a corner of the youth's lips. A shallow dimple appeared on one cheek as Yue ran his fingers through his dark locks. "I don't mind... I mean, this should be a learning experience after all - they sound pretty mysterious, these Hacker creatures, and I don't think I should expect you to know everything." Should I? For a moment he paused, though his laughing face remained. I guess this is why my friends call me naive. He doesn't seem like a scammer, though. Plus, he came - or at least, the shop came - with recommendations. Hmmm.
"Oh, but it's really okay - no need to be flustered." Yue murmured with a slight wave of his hand while he listened pensively to Fiach and his eyes followed the egg still. It was fascinating... really - that cluster of pixels on his screen was something alive, technically speaking. One or two weeks... After the synopsis I will be done with most of my projects. Should be a good time to start... hanging out with it. The thought struck Yue as highly amusing - hanging out with an A.I.? He was already weird enough.
Then Yue turned to face Fiach again, and it was pretty evident that the youth was at least somewhat interested in this. "Parent and friend? That should be an interesting experience." When Fiach posed his question - perhaps his first ever to Yue - he laughed nervously. The 'sorry' was almost out of his lips, before he realized that he, and Fiach, have been apologizing to each other for... talking. Right, shy streak. He thought warily to himself, and then looked at Fiach again.
"Yeah... what kind of data do they eat, and does the consumption rate change once they grow older? I mean this little thing here's already eating a lot, or so it seems to me - is it possible for it to eat too much data? And... it seems kind of weird to just keep address it... as 'it', considering that it's supposed to be alive." Yue glanced at the egg for a moment, his head tilted slightly. "Am I supposed to give him, or her, a name? Or do they name themselves?" Was that an odd question? Seems fairly weird... but then again, these things are intelligent, probably smarter than the average canine. So maybe Fiach won't think that it's too odd. His green eyes watched Fiach's face for a reaction from the corner of his sight as he pretended to fiddle around with his laptop.

Though Fiach felt a little awkward when Yue managed a laugh at his lame joke, he found himself once again rubbing at the back of his head. Wishing briefly that his hair weren't in its typical ponytail so that he might be able to just scrub a hand through his hair like he normally would when he began to feel slightly nervous. Or unprepared. Or just about any time that he didn't feel like he was floundering. Which wasn't often. A smile quirked at his lips when he saw the youth do the very same thing he'd intended on doing. They were a lot alike, now that Fiach thought about it, and he wasn't sure if that was a good thing, or a bad thing.
Giving a small laugh, Fiach shrugged, "You'd actually be surprised how many people wind up feeling like they didn't get the whole story when I can't answer all their questions." After a short pause, he continued, almost as if he was half thinking aloud, rather than specifically talking to Yue, "Unfortunately, though...we don't have the original data on these guys. The files from when they were first created. If we had that...we'd know a lot more for certain." He sighed, slightly displeased with the lack of knowledge and the inability to go about getting said knowledge.
Slightly surprised when Yue turned his full attention on him, a sparse blush appeared on Fiach's face before he recovered, giving a short nod, "That's really the only way I can think of to describe it...A bond where you teach them and learn from them, but are also there for them when they want to talk." Now that would be an interesting theory to explain, should Yue ask. Shaking his head slightly to remind himself to pay attention to the customer and not his own musings, he listened carefully as Yue listed out his questions. Mulling over the answers even before the boy had completed asking them.
"The kind of data they eat varies based upon personality of both the Hacker - and the human who has them. In short, whatever data you have...is fair game to them unless you say otherwise. They do tend to eat more the older they grow; however, they seem to compensate this by eating more out of random areas and not just your computer. Sort of like how the older we get, the less we eat at home, if that makes any sense. I honestly don't know if it could eat too much data...I don't think there's ever been a case of it in the history of this shop, though." He paused to take a couple of breaths and give his mouth a break, before continuing, "The Hackers usually have names of their own, that they'll tell you upon hatching. But if they don't, you're definitely more than welcome to ask them for their name or to give them one yourself."
Feeling slightly embarrassed for talking so long, a free hand lifted to once more fiddle with his penny whistle before he inquired, "Is there anything else I can help you with, Yue?" He said it with a smile, genuinely happy to be of any assistance he could be, and pleased to have someone so kind to talk to.

"Tis a pity, then." Yue said in agreement to Fiach's remark that the original data for these critters were lost. If those data files were still in existence, getting the answers wouldn't be such a trial for both of them then. Like he said, learning experience. The youth mused to himself: it wasn't as if he didn't have enough things to be learning already.
"Alright... I think you've answered all of my questions - for now. Nice meeting you." Yue said with a flopsided grin as he quickly stood up and offered his hand to Fiach. He took a look at his watch and almost panicked - he had spent much more time here than he had intended, and if he stayed much longer he was going to be late for his next class at the university. "Well... actually, one last inquiry." He grinned as he began putting his laptop away. "Should I come back once the Hacker hatches for... I don't know, some kind of check-up?" The question suddenly sounded incredibly stupid in his ears once the words were out of his lips, and he tried to not look embarrased as he quickly zipped up his book bag and slid it onto one shoulder, hands tucked once again securely in his pocket.
