I like fighting games because I like...fighting. I have played quite alot (mostly classic titles) but yet, few made me "Woah! I like that stuff!". Those few games are: Super Smash Bros. serie and Def Jam: FFNYC.
But my question is: What components of fighting game make you dislike/like it?
For me:
-Belive it or not, one of the thing that really affect my opinion is the defense system. That's why I love SSBM. Why I find the defense so special? For the simple fact you can roll, dodge and have limited shield. Plus, dodging and rolling is simple.
Once, I played a game where to do a simple quick backstep required a combination of buttons. Just imagine to press 5 buttons like you were doing some kind of special attack just to dodge a strike that can be done with 1 button.
Also, in alot of games there's this cycle: Striking combo + Blocking Combo + Striking Combo + Blocking Combo + Darn it, I'll just Grab. That famous cycle really makes games boring in my opinion. Generally, the games with that cycle have the most simple defense system: Press 1 button to block ALL STRIKES!
-Otherwise, I like original characters. What I mean, I hate having the same weakness/strenght/similar movesets for everyone. For example: Ryu and Ken from Street Fighters and SSB. It explains everything. "OMWTFG! I unlocked Ken in SF3 EXTREM ALPHA SUPER SONIC SPECIAL EDITION 2005!" or "AFTER 300 matches and 20 hours of gameplay, I finally got ROY! He's so better than Marth because they got the same moveset but Roy use fire. cool "
-I like simple stuff. Combos like using Diagonals and Holding this and that buttons while unpluging the console and screaming 10 times "NISPE" to use Sub-Zero's "LOLUGOTFUKINDANOSE4REAL" special move just piss me off. I usually must train for a few hours or days just to masters those combos.
So that's pretty much for me... ninja

I like fighting games with weapons, that adds more moves to the mix. I also like a selection of tottaly different characters, that have nothing to do with eachother. Each fighter should have a tottaly unique fighting style. I also like flashy moves. =D

What makes a great fighting game, in my opinion, is the depth of the fighting system. The game has to have a immersing set of rules governing the way combat is played. I don't care if it gets really technical if it also has some less challenging material to master and build upon. I don't like when it gets too simple. I like SSBM, but when people insist on turning off the items, then the combat just gets boring and repetitive. Great fighting titles for me are Guilty Gear, Virtua Fighter, and the crown jewel Street Fighter series. I love Guilty Gear's aesthetic and combo system. Virtua Fighter is realistic and very technical. Street Fighter is the original and it brings tons of depth to the table. There is something new and great with each incarnation.
On a side note: the most recent incarnations of Ryu and Ken have enough differences to make playing either one form exclusive strategies of how to play as them.

I like all fighting games...to a certain extent. I've played a good number of bad ones and even I've had some fun with it.
I just don't like it when your opponent practically mastered the system and can whail on you without giving you a chance to breathe. I mean it's good and all that you've mastered every nook and cranny, but it takes the fun out of the game...to me that is.

I like simple fighting games, like Smash Bros. and Jump Ultimate Stars. I can never remember combos in stuff like street fighter, so I usually suck at them which is why I don't play them.

At least the normal moves do.

Even if your opponent knocks you down and does it, the game gives you enough time to recover with a jump. Only sure fire way to nail someone with it is at the end of an aerial attack. If you miss with a Shoryuken, then there's a good 3 or 4 seconds that you are completely defenseless.

I played Armore Core 4 (finished it in 3 days). Even through it's not a fighting game, I liked the defense system.
The simple Quick Boost is really something great if you use quick close combat robots. You can use it dodge attacks, rush in/out or simply confuse your opponent.
I think that in general, the thing I find lacking in alot of fighting games are the tactical moves. They can be quick and simple and bring some new aspects. I mean, just rolling to get behind your opponent or doing a quick side step to dodge your opponent attacks can be really interessing especially in fast paced fights.
