Incense - The Scent

User Image
>> Name
Kaleb Xu
>> Stage
Child
>> Appearance
Coiled silver burner and standard clear glass cup. The oil is multi-colored in swirling tones of red, green, white, and purple.

The wispy smoke rising from the oil makes halos and mysterious but enchanting shapes like arches and doves.

Sturdily built for a child and yet slender, with fair skin and long, flowing, elbow-length silver-white hair which would seems almost to be made of light but for the red, purple, and green streaks toward the ends which resemble the swirling colors in his previous oil form. Innocent-looking olive-eucalyptus-green eyes under thick, dark, well-defined eyebrows. Long, slanted nose and small, curious mouth.

At his first appearance, he wore a bright white one-piece, short-sleeved tunic and white crew socks.

Guardian - The Sniffer

>> Name
Han-hui Xu (hawn-h'way shoo), Hanna

>> Gender
Female

>> Age
22

>> Birthday
Sometime in autumn

_______Appearance
>> Height
~5'3.5"

>> Weight
~123 lb

>> General
Han-Hui has a medium build, slender in her upper half but with round hips, strong legs, and short ankles. She looks distinctly and yet ambiguously Oriental, her face not identifiable with any specific ethnicity.

>> Top-Down
  • Hair: waist-length, straight, black, with long bangs parted to her left.
  • Face: oval-shaped; full of very subtle curves, with a soft chin.
  • Ears: round and slant slightly outward at the top, tapering toward the connected earlobes, creating a pleasant, almost fey-like angle from her face.
  • Eyes: dark brown; small, narrow, and almond-shaped, with a downward curve toward their inside. Sculpted eyebrows, neither thin nor bushy.
  • Nose: longer than a typical Oriental nose, with a gently upturned tip.
  • Mouth: neither large nor small; lips neither thin nor plump, suited to smiling pleasantly.
  • Neck: neither thick nor thin, short nor long; slender.
  • Shoulders: not very broad; soft and pleasantly rounded, suited to daily activity.
  • Arms: slender, with firm musculature hiding under faint traces of babyfat.
  • Hands: small, with slender fingers familiar with the piano and round fingertips with closely trimmed nails.
  • Bust: small but well-proportioned; modest B-cup.
  • Waist: narrow, slender, forming a delightful curve from the back
  • Legs: curvy hips with voluptuous thighs, rounded knees, and strong, coquettishly curved calves.
  • Feet: a little wide, with high arches, round heels, with toes each smaller than the one before, and very delicate ankles.

_______Personality
Empathetic sometimes to a fault, Han-Hui loves to share her blessings and can't stand the negative vibes of anger, despair, and grief. As a result, she often cries too much. She is usually optimistic and cheery in the hopes of brightening the lives of those around her, although she has her moments of apathy, anger, and sadness just like everyone else. She is most afraid of abandonment and has a hard time handling sarcasm. Linked to this insecurity is her desire to be liked, which makes her easily attracted to people who are attracted to her, regardless of their personalities. She hates to make these types of people unhappy, but holds to her own interests passionately. She has an aptitude for learning but a comparative handicap when it comes to application. This results in her being the proverbial "jack of all trades; master of none."

>> Likes
music, romance, flowers, reading, fluffy pillows, innocent secrets, subtle beauties in life

>> Dislikes
overpowering scents, bitter tastes, sour tastes, illness, gossip

_______History:

Han-Hui was born late in the life of her parents and had a rather unremarkable childhood in a smug town in a middle-class city a little ways from Cyrus City. Her doting parents made sure she attended a fine, sheltered religious academy from elementary school up until she graduated from high school, while her father worked in a corporate office and her mother stayed home to mind the house. After secondary school, Han-Hui moved to Cyrus City to attend a prominent university and experience the "real world." Having never needed to put her knowledge and skills to the test, it turned out to be less accommodating than she had grown to expect.
In her first few months of university, Han-hui continued to live on the counsel of her parents, who were always more than happy for opportunities to dote on their only daughter. Conflicted between clinging to her sheltered sensibilities and opening her mind to exploring new possibilities, Han-hui went through a tumult of low and high points, ranging from crippling anxiety attacks to dreamy euphoria. As most students do, however, Han-hui soon gained her own sense of independence and explored this "real world" to the best of her ability. Her interests varied across the years from as many things as food to fashion, love to law, art to environmentalism; intrigued by many things but not particularly excelling at any of them. With such a mediocre background, she completed a bachelor's degree in the liberal arts and sciences.

Exhausted with the demands of her education and less than eager to jump into the rigors of the corporate world, Han-hui decided to rent an apartment in a boarding house in Cyrus City and ply her skills at any odd job which allowed her leisure time to explore her own talents.

The Gift - Purchase RP

Smiling fondly, the dark-haired girl opened the thin cardboard box and carefully unwrapped the clear glass bowl from its tissue paper. This incense set had been an unexpected Christmas gift from her boyfriend’s father and his girlfriend, who had noticed Han-hui’s interest in the candles perfuming his house the last time the young girl had come for a visit. She remembered her boyfriend's face grinning from ear to ear as he presented the gift to her.

Quote:
"Here. It's from Dad."

"Really?" Her own smile began to spread, pleased that she had become enough a part of the family that she warranted a gift. She looked down at the neatly wrapped box and started looking for a corner that she could unwrap from.

"Oh, come on... it's just wrapping paper, go ahead and tear it open." He grinned.

"No... the paper's really pretty... and the person who wrapped it probably put a lot of effort into making it neat."

"It's PAPER, Han-hui. And wrapping things is their job."

"Well, yes, but..."

"Just open it." He abruptly took her face in his hands and kissed her forehead, expressing in one gesture how cute he thought she was, how frustrating he thought she was being, and how much he loved his silly girl.

"Fine..." Scrunching her nose in defeat, Han-hui peeled up one corner of the wrapping paper and pulled. The paper resisted, and she tugged harder, until the paper finally ripped with a satisfying sound of tearing.

Her boyfriend cheered and clapped. "See, that wasn't so hard-" he teased as she smacked her fist lightly into his shoulder and blew him a raspberry.

Peeling the rest of the colorful wrap away, she examined the decorative box and opened the lid. Inside the holiday-patterned cardstock box lay red, green, and white tissue paper, which when disentangled and pushed aside revealed a shiny coil of metal, a tea light, a glass bowl, and a little glass bottle with an elegant label.

"Solace Scents... Sparkling Angel?"

He leaned forward and kissed her forehead again, grinning even brighter than before. The girl smiled back at him with narrowed eyes. "You helped, didn't you?"

"No, of course not," he grinned, knowing full well she wasn't fooled and having no intention of it anyway. "Well, maybe a little."

"Thanks." She kissed him tenderly, even as they smiled through their kiss. "I need to tell your dad thanks, too."

Sweet Sorrow - The Split

It was her worst nightmare. It wouldn't have been an entire truth to say she hadn't seen it coming. Rather she had dreaded it, hoped if she never thought about it, it would never happen.

Yet here she was, a trembling knot of pale limbs on the sofa, her quiet cries muffled by the pillow she was curled around.

Things had gone well. Or at least that's what she told herself, that things had gone as well as something like that could have been expected. Things definitely could have been worse, and she told herself she was happy they hadn't been. There was still a branch of hope... wasn't there?

Still, the thoughts kept creeping up around her desperate hopefulness.

She'd been advised against this, and she had even agreed with the advice, when she had been younger, but she'd thought by now she had grown older, wiser, more worldy. As her sniffles sank into the pillowcase, she wondered if she really had known better all along and had simply fallen for artful fantasies disguised as enlightening thoughts.

There had been talk of marriage, children, future... there had been smiles and discussions of names, places to vacation, who was going to take care of taxes, who was going to pay the bills, what kind of landscaping they'd do in the backyard...

The quiet tears she shed now echoed the ones which had come in earlier, similar thoughts. If only I were smarter... I should be smarter... I should have learned to take care of myself better... he told me I was smart, but I still can't keep up... he wishes I... I wish I... I should have noticed... I should have fixed it earlier... if only I had seen... if only I hadn't clung so hard... if only I had given him more space when he needed it... I shouldn't have stifled him... I wish I had known... maybe if I hadn't brought it up, this wouldn't have happened... but would it have been the same in the end? Would it really not have been happy? We can't be happy if it's hollow... I wish I had done better... I wish... if only... I should have....

Taking a deep breath, she fought against her despondence. She really did know that this was for the better, or at least the intentions were for the better. She knew for certain that there had to be a change. There was no fault, or at least if there were, it was shared equally. This distance would provide room for both of them to grow, in body and mind and soul, and it might give them both a clearer direction and a sense of purpose. They both knew that being this closely intertwined with each other would hold them back, whether they willingly allowed it or not. They both knew they had to learn to be individuals in full capacity before they could have a strong chance of being a complete couple.

And so it was that the tears subsided, and she let the soggy pillow droop from her arms to the cushions of the couch. She smiled just a little shakily, touching her hand to her mouth, remembering the last kiss marking the final step back to "just friends."

Here's to independence, she thought as she stood up and walked to the bathroom to wash her salty face.

Life always went on, and the best she could do was her best in making sure it didn't go wasted. She would go abroad by herself, and she would enjoy herself and learn as much as she could cram into her brain. She would move into that new apartment when she came back, and she would go back to school without him and make the best of her final academic year.

And who knew? Maybe... just maybe... that happy dream would come back to life after this hectic while of wakefulness.

The Prompt

[Entry for Sparkling Angel]

A little tow-headed boy no older than seven or eight years old sat on the edge of his bed, tapping the bottom of a colored pencil against his chin as he thought. A small green dictionary lay just in front of his crosslegged feet, and he pushed it carefully aside so he could lie down on his belly and use the dictionary as a makeshift writing table. The intense concentration showed in his hazel-gray eyes, and after some time, he set the green pencil to the sheet of white paper under his left hand and began to write.

Quote:
Dear St. Nikolas,

My name is Kaleb Xu. How are you? I am fine. I am sorry for the trouble, I am sure you're very busy this time of year, but Mom told me you would be more than happy to get me something special for Christmas because it's your job and you like to do nice things for good boys and girls. It must be hard to work all night on Christmas. I hope you have a good vacation the rest of the year.

He pulled his hand back and reread the lines he had written, pleased that there weren't any mistakes, and that he hadn't written too crookedly on the unlined paper. He paused, colored pencil suspended above the paper as his two little feathery white wings fluttered on his back. They rested again when he bent his head over the paper and resumed his letter.

Quote:
Mom says I haven’t been a perfect angel this year but nobody's perfect and I'm no less an angel and that makes me a very good boy. If you think she is right, you can give me something if it's really not too much trouble. She doesn't write what she wants because she says that grownups are too ol not as important to St. Nikolas as kids so she doesn’t write letters to you but I think she would still really like something but I am only guessing.

"Kale!" A woman’s voice floated in from another room. "Do you want to help me make cookies now?" Kaleb dropped his pencil and scrambled off the bed, trotting out to the kitchen to help his mother with the holiday baking. After about half an hour, he returned to his room and carefully climbed up on the bed again, reading over what he had already written while nibbling the end of his pencil so he could remember where he had left off.

Quote:
She has been writing all my letters to you so she never writes anything for herself but now I am old enough to write my own letters and I think she deserves something special too. I think she wants a kitten but she's afraid we can't take care of one. I'm sure we have enough room and I would help her feed it every day and I think it will make her very happy, so if you can please send her a kitten I would thank you a lot very much. I think she also wants a new coat because her coat is getting worn and dirty and she doesn't want to go out and buy one even though it is old and too big for her. Maybe that would be easier to get than a baby kitten. Mom says I should not worry about her and just tell you what I would like for Christmas. What I would really like is not really a toy but to learn the violin. My mom has one from my uncle but it is so old the strings are breaking really easy and the bow got eaten by bugs and is starting to fall apart.

"Do you want to help me wrap these cookies now, sweetie?" Again came a call from the kitchen, and Kaleb was obliged to hop up again and make himself useful. After an hour or so of wrapping fresh cookies in cellophane wrap, folding festive gift tags, and affixing said tags to the cellophane packages with bits of ribbon, the little shining boy returned to his room to continue writing.

Quote:
I really love music so I am very, very sad that I will not get to learn to play the violin. I know violins are very, very expensive so if I hope you don't have to spend too much money. I can wait if you want to think of something else, so you don't have to worry about getting it exactly on Christmas.

Kaleb’s dark-haired mother, Han-hui, appeared in the doorway and smiled down at her little blond boy. "I put all the names on the cookies, so if you want to help me deliver them, you’d better get your coat on."

Once again, little Kaleb set down his green pencil, scrambling down from his bed to tug on his coat and boots to go door to door delivering holiday cheer to neighbors and friends alike. Several hours passed as all the deliveries were made and several invitations for hot chocolate and a chat were extended and accepted. By the time the pair got home, it was already dark. Kaleb's mother started preparing dinner, and Kaleb ran back to his room to finish his letter to St. Nikolas de Fabra.

Quote:
That's all I have to write this year, so Merry Christmas. And if you get really busy and need my help, please let me know because I would love to help you in any way that I can. Mom says I would make a great St. Nikolas's helper. I hope so, so if you need help just write back soon. Thank you very much and
Merry Christmas.

Love,
_____
Kaleb Xu

The little winged boy folded up the three handwritten pages of his letter gleefully and ran to grab an envelope from the stationery cupboard. After carefully placing the letter inside the envelope sealing it with a dab or two of water, he ran to give the envelope to his mother to address.

"Oh, sweetheart, I’m so sorry, I forgot. The mailman’s already come and gone today, and..." Kaleb’s mother trailed off at the look of pure anguish on her little boy’s face. "But... we still have a little time before the post office closes! If we hurry, we can still get your letter to St. Nikolas before Christmas." Kaleb’s smile instantly reappeared and he dashed off to pull on his coat again. Sighing a little at her lapse of memory and at her son’s enthusiasm, Han-hui wrapped up the half-made dinner and stuck it in the refrigerator to be cooked later and grabbed the St. Nikolas letter, sticking it into her coat pocket.

After an hour and forty minutes of driving through snow and waiting through rush-hour traffic to get to the post office, Kaleb and his mother returned wearily but triumphantly home. Kaleb's face was positively aglow with the remnants of the absolute pleasure he had felt at finally posting the letter with his plea to St. Nikolas de Fabra for a secret surprise for his mother. He had the best feeling that it was going to be a wonderful Christmas.
