My friend just got a violin as a gift for Christmas and he broke one of the stirings. I wanted to buy him replacement strings for his birthday, but I didn't know what kind would be the best to get for a beginner. Does any one have any advice for me? I'm not sure if buying strings is like buying reeds for an instrument, because I know there's a big big difference between brands so I didn't know if that was the same for violin strings.

For a beginner, you might want to get red label. It's THE basic string.

I carry around a bunch of Dominant strings for when I break them.

But I use Pirastro Obligato.

The basic, middle school orchestra brand (and the cheapest) would be RedLabel. You can find them in any music shop, even if they are band-based.

If you want to go a step higher (and make a harder hit on your wallet), go for Dominants. They're lower-class professional, or high-class student. Due to cost, those are the type this poor-college student invests in.

Pirastro Obligato and other italian-sounding names are top of the line (and vastly more expensive). In this class of strings, there is also the special gold E-string, which will spoil any violinist to no ends.
