Her hand tightly gripping the railing, Pell stared at the white expanse before her. It was a terrible, icy death just waiting to happen! But, of course, she wasn't scared. Ice skating was baby stuff, right? Despite her bravado, her other hand still held onto Wotcher's hand and she just dared him to let go. She was shaky enough as it was in these stupid ice shoes! Agh, maybe coming here wasn't such a good idea after all.

When Wotcher had first told her they were going ice skating, the orange-haired toddler had been thrilled. She could be a pretty, pretty ice princess just like the girl in that movie! Pell had imagined herself doing the exact same things the actress had done - swirling, spinning, and jumping. She was pretty good at that doing that! Except once she stepped foot into the rink, her ability to do anything beyond clutch helplessly at the railing and her protector absolutely left her.

However, the thought of being a pretty, pretty ice princess hadn't left her. With the hand of Wotcher still held firmly, Pell let go of the railing and moved her wings to give herself a slight push forward. For the first few seconds, everything went well; she was ice skating! Slightly more confident, she used her wings again. This proved to be a mistake. Her dreams crashed along with her as she and Wotcher both fell, a twisted mess upon the ice.

Managing to climb to her feet (but only after falling two more times!), Pell moved back to the railing and moved along it until she could step out of the rink. Then, sitting onto one of the benches, she folded her arms and frowned at the people she could see who were successfully skating. Hmph.

"Leo, I want to skate."

"No, Fiore. You'll fall, and bust your head open, and your brains will fall out. What will I tell Natalia then?"

"...you could put them back in? Mumma woul'nt hafta know."

Leonora sipped at her watery hot cocoa idly, biting chunks out of the styrofoam cup with serrated teeth.

"You make a good point," she said, nodding approval at her little brother. "But then Nati'd just bust my head open and prolly eat my brain, so we're no good whichever way we go."

Fiore sighed wistfully and looked out at the rink again from their seats safely behind the barrier. All those people on the ice sure did look like they were having fun. Even the girl with the pretty wings that kept falling down.

"She's not falling and breaking her head, Leo! Pweeeease, can't I go skate?"

"Nope."

"Then why we's even here?!"

"Because you're the one wanted to wait for 'The Swan Princess' show they got at seven o'clock, dude. I'm jus' here since Nati's being all emo again and won't get out of bed."

Fiore sighed, and contented himself to watch the pretty-winged girl again.

Continuing to sit on the bench, Pell allowed her yellow eyes to scan the rink, watching those skating within it. After a few minutes, her disappointment of being unable to skate had faded into boredom. Beyond skating, and she certainly couldn't do that, there was nothing fun to do here! Sure, there were other kids, but they're were all out skating, laughing, and having fun without her. The nerve.

Taking her eyes off of the rink, the toddler swept them down the aisle between the barrier and the snack shop. There was a few people sitting here, most of them seeming to be parents who were either worriedly or proudly watching their children skate.

However, there was one other child. A grin flashed onto Pell's face as her eyes settled onto it. A girl-boy-whatever with really pretty hair! It was purple and long and it had flowers! Oooh! But why wasn't he-she-whatever skating? Maybe they kept falling, too?

Never one to leave unanswered questions, Pell hopped to her feet, wobbling a little on her skates. Wotcher was occupied with the claw machine in the arcade, so the Sin'aeis made her way unsteadily towards the whatever with pretty hair.

With absolutely no concept of personal space nor privacy, Pell stopped as she neared the it and the lady it was with. "Why ain'tcha skatin'?"

Fiore stared at the pretty winged girl with wide eyes.

"Ummy."

Gosh, she was pretty.

"'Cuz I'll fall, an'...an' break m'head open, and brains'll fall out?"

"Damn straight," Leonora said boredly, sipping at her hot cocoa that in hindsight really was just hot water with little marshmallows. "And I don't want to clean it up off the ice, right? So we're just watchin'."

"Swan Prin'ness is gonna be comin' soon," Fiore said, getting over his initial shock of how - GOSH, she was pretty - cute the wingy-girl was. "I's gonna get a otta-grap."

"Autograph."

"Thass wha' I said!"

Now that she was closer, she noticed that it sure did have some big eyes. Wow. But at least they were pretty eyes. Such a nice color. "But I felled a lot and my brains didn't neva fall out," she exclaimed, patting her hands on her hair to assure herself that there really wasn't any brain unknowingly leaking out. Nope, all of her brain was still safely locked away in her skull.

"Maybe iffin you put duck tape on yer head yer brains won't fall out? Wotcha sez that duck tape can be used for anythin'!" She nodded and smiled. Yup, Wotcher had used duck tape to fix a lot things!

The red-headed toddler smiled at the mention of the coming show. "Yeah! I want ta see Swan Princess, but Wotcha sed NO. We just came ta skate, but I can't even do that," she said, looking down at the laced ice skates on her feet. Stupid things.

"Wut's an ottagraf," she asked, looking back up again. It sounded scary!

"But I don' wanna be a duck," Fiore said earnestly, eyes wide. He liked being a flower!

Gasping aloud when Pretty Wing-Girl admitted she, too, had wanted to see Swan Princess - really, clearly they were meant to be the best of best friends ever - Fiore gave an excited giggle.

"Y'can stay wi' us and watch! Right, Leo?"

"Whatever."

"Tha' means yeah!"

He paused then, thinking hard. What was an autograph, anyway? Leonora had put the idea in his head.

"Um....I think they go' long necks and eat tree-hair."

"Leaves."

"Yeah! Leefs. I wan' get the Swan Prin'nesses otta-graf. I thin' I'd take good care'a it, too. right Leo?"

"Mm."

"Duck tape dun turn you into a duck! It jus' makes thangs stick together, like this!" Smacking her hands together, Pell intertwined her small fingers together. "See? But there's this stuff called duck saws at the China place and I'm bettin' that iffin you eat that you turn into a duck," she nodded, her own eyes growing wide. You had to watch out for that kinda stuff!

Her hands hastily untangled themselves and began to clap once she was invited to watch the show with the purple-haired it. "Yesyes! We can watch the pretty princess!" Now that she was staying, Pell decided that she was tried of standing up, and carefully moved to take a seat beside the other kid. She flashed it a grin once she was settled, having totally forgotten about Wotcher. Asking permission was for the weak!

Listening to the description of an autograph, Pell instantly knew that she wanted one. With such a long neck, her autograph would be able to help her with lots of things! Like getting cookies from the top of the counter and getting the secret books that Wotcher hid in the top of his closet. She'd always wanted to know what was in those. "I want an ottagraf, too! Mebbe our ottagrafs can be friends? Imma name mine Lassie!"

Oh, that reminded her! "My name is Pell, wha' yours?"

Leonora finished off her drink and eyed the two kidlets beside her, mouth pushing to one side. Clearly, there was a misconception going on around here.

"Uh, Fio...you're thinkin' of giraffes."

"Thass wha' I said!"

Fiore directed his attentions back to Pell, looking radiantly happy at making a new friend.

"Pell. Peellll. Pretty Pell!"

Standing up on his seat, puffing out his chest and throwing back his hair - which flowed in a way no boy's hair should, for matters of masculinity and self respect - and beamed.

"I'm Fiore!"

"You're a dork."

"No, I think giraffes and autograffs are almost the same thing but not? Like how a poogle and a crocker spangle are dogs," the toddler commented, placing her hands onto her knees and blinking at the lady. She was almost like Wotcher, really. Pretending to know all sorts of stuff, but not really knowing anything at all.

Pell smiled widely once Fiore turned back to her. "You really think so? Thanks," she said, blushing slightly. She'd always known she was pretty. Of course she was! She had pretty flowers and pretty wings and her hair was the bestest color ever! But not too many people had ever told her what she already knew. It felt good to hear it from someone else. "You're pretty, too!"

And it really was. Watching as her new friend stood, Pell couldn't deny that the purple hair, with its flowers and length and flowy-ness, was definitely prettier than her own short her. She fingered it idly. But she still had wings, right? The weight of them upon her back reassured her and she giggled at her friend as his chest puffed out. "Fiore, huh? Tha's a nice name."

But then something terrible happened! That horrible, icky lady called Fiore, her new friend, a bad word! "Hey! Tha's not very nice! Fiore is not a dork! Fiore is my friend! Yo- ..you're the dork!"

Leonora gave Pell an utterly unimpressed look.

"Why don't you go and-"

Sensing an incoming fight, Fiore cleared his throat and interceded, smiling brightly at Pell.

"Less go on th' ice," he said quickly, pointing out to the now mostly empty rink. "I be' we can jus' scoot around on our knees or somethin', that way we won't fall."

Leonora shrugged, picking her serrated shark-like teeth unconcernedly.

"Okay, let's go," Pell replied brightly, turning from the lady and ignoring her. She wasn't scared of her big, mean face! Hmph, Pell could probably even "take her on," like they did in those fighting movies. She even had a toy real sword, and she knew how to stab and hit stuff with it, too! Yeah, next time she would just have to bring her sword and see what the woman did then.

As the two neared the opening to the rink, the toddler looked down at the white ice. They could slide on their knees, but that ice was hard. She knew, she had fell down on it a lot! And it was cold. But she didn't want to fall down again, especially in front of her new friend! She could try it.

Stepping onto the ice, Pell then bent down until her knees met it. Coldcoldcold. "It's real cold, ya know. I thin' it will hurt our knees," she said, looking back to Fiore. Brrr!

Fiore nodded eagerly, and stepped onto the ice. He promptly started to slip and skidded frantically, arms waving as though he was trying to take flight.

"Slippy!" he said. "Jeezum, iss REAL slippy."

Shuffling his feet, trying hard to stay upright, Fiore edged closer to Pell and knelt down carefully.

"Well," he said reasonably. "Iss not lava, a'least."

"Lava migh' be better, though. At leas' it's soft, like a blanket," she said, running her hand along the hard ice. Agh, this was really hurting her knees! Maybe if she moved it would get better? "'Kay, let's skate! I guess we jus' push with our hands? Lemme try." With that, she placed both palms on the ice and pushed. Here she goes!

The push did succeed in propelling her forward, but only by a small amount. And her knees hurt even worse now! "I don' think dis is going to work. You're 'posed to skate with skates, not knees!" Having had enough of 'knee skating,' she then tried to regain her footing, finally managing to after a few slips. Looking down at her knees, she frowned. They were read!

Turning to Fiore, she was about to say something to him when a loud voice came over the rink speakers: "Will all skaters please exit the rink. Preparations for The Swan Princess ice show will now begin."

"Awww. Just when we were 'bout to skate," she said, folding her arms across her chest and wobbling slightly. "Guess we gotta go back."
PostPosted: Mon Mar 24, 2008 9:34 pm

Fiore started to nod his agreement, then paused. Wait. Wasn't lava the stuff that Leo called hot ground snot? He always thought that meant it was burny and hurty. Hmm.

He was about to voice his theory that maybe lava was something very much NOT like a blanket when the announcement came over the speakers. He gave a great gasp and seized Pell's hand, racing across the ice so fast they didn't even slip. Taking a seat back in the bleachers, he bounced eagerly.

"SWAN PRINCESS, SWAN PRINCESS," he chirped in utter excitement.
