Its terrified squeals could be heard, as Arcanine hovered over the small hare. With a swipe of his paw, it was silenced, and layed there limply. Placing his paw over his prey, he ripped the meat, separating it from the bones. He ate it hungrily, feeling a few drops of blood slide from his mouth to his chin. The deep red color of the blood, glinted in the sunlight staining his golden pelt. Spitting out the bone that remained in his jaw, and tossing the remains of the hare that he had eaten off to the side, a satisfied look could be found on his face. He didn't particularly care for the hunt, or the thrill that killing offered, but he wasn't below killing for food.

Watching a few other hunts commence in the distance, he took notice of the fact that it was held in groups. Recalling what a crow had mentioned to him when he had first came, "So, I'm considered a rouge here?" Arcanine said outloud, raising an eyebrow. "Suits me quite fine. After all, its preferable to being chained down to a group or its laws."

But, all he had done here when he came was hunting. Was there not anything else that offered entertainment? Amusement? He supposed that he would have to seek that out, but he would rather be found than finding. It was such a bore to be the latter.

But the first thing to do was to clean himself off. He walked a few steps, tilting his head to inquire where a body of water could be found.

User ImageThe large, black wild dog had taken to the grounds, apparently diverting the attention of nearby lions hunting. He wore a snarl on his lips, his temper drawing so close into the negatives. He never had taken a liking in the slightest to lions, refusing to even acknowledge the vast powers the lions' gods and goddesses may have held. In his thoughts, though they may sometimes be formidable opponents, they were still lower in superiority to his own breed. He still wouldn't have ever been the one to provoke a lion, however, as there was no need to gain from an encounter such as that.

But he was hungry now, and all the prey around him were being taken by the lions who were already practically satiated. What greedy wasteful beings! he thought. Hunting for mere pleasure wasn't something he really had an interest in, but it disgusted him whenever he saw those inferior lions doing it. One day they will learn of the value of life.

The smell of fresh blood caught the wild dog's attention as he continued padding through the grass, and he narrowed his eyes, allowing his steps to grace the ground with more caution as the scent he was trailing grew stronger. At last, he came upon the little carcass of a hare left with a few scraps to it, and he emitted a low growl as he turned to spot a bright irregular lion nearby the blood-stained spot.

"What feeble prey you've downed," the black canine spoke, breaking what silence in the air the lion must have heard before his voice. "Why so distracted?" he asked, referring to the lion's apparent lost gaze.

At first glance, Arcanine hadn't given any sign that he had heard the wild dog, much less his words. His back faced towards the new stranger, he licked his paw delicately, his face expressionless at the taste of fresh blood. "I find it distasteful to hunt for any more, or any less than what is needed. Do you not see it that way?"

Jumping off the ledge that he stood upon, with ease and grace that befitted a lion, he walked a few steps towards what he was looking for. Having found a clear pond of water, he started to rinse his paws in a gentle manner, and dipped his head within to wash the blood that remained. He lifted his head, beads of water trailing down his body as he lifted his gaze to a stranger with a slow assessment. "I'm sure you understand that I place my personal matters over a stranger like you."

A pause lingered, as he said with abruptness, "So. What brings you to me? As far as I knew, wild dogs like you, and lions did not intermingle. Unless you were desperate for some company?" Giving the other a sardonic smile, he continued "I enjoy female company, but you'll do. " He would do, afterall, in only a few words Arcanine could surmise that this stranger gave off an air of confidence, and even a hint of superiority. Unlike the simpering, bumbling, idiots that he had seen .

The stranger's lack of attention for his prominence may have irritated him to some degree if it was not for the words spoken that rang in tune with his own views. Intrigued, the large wild dog followed the strange lion onto the ledge and off, to the fresh pond. Resisting the temptation to share the water with the lion, he simply stood watch, entertaining the idea that there may have been someone else nearby that would have been better for company.

But his head switched back to the orange lion when he was through with quenching his thirst, and he noticed that he was being judged. He proudly puffed his chest out unconsciously and a smile came as he answered politely, "Of course, lion," though he severely doubted that any "personal matter" of the stranger's would have been worthwhile to acknowledge regardless. He had been merely questioning his attention to the environment which very well was treacherous at times.

A laughter came as the black canine answered with a tone that reeked of care in choice of words, for he had no desire to mess with the lion's temper, "Whatever gave you the thought that I wanted to mingle with a lion is absurd, much less enjoyed one's company, for it is not by such a simple choice that I am in your presence. I caught scent of fresh blood, and am guilty of coming over to see whether it had been a lone fallen prey I could have given freedom to. But apparently not so, lion, but very good try."

His red eyes gleamed as he kept an eye on the stranger, ears pricked up, always alert for signs of threat or danger. Despite his cautious stance, there was a slight smile to his expression, as he was humored by the lion, for the moment. "By request, I shall glorify you with my presence," he gave a mock bow, and snickered at the commentary on females. "Females, eh? My dearest apologies I cannot change into one..."

He drifted into silence as he sniffed the air for signs of anything else that may have been nearby--predator or prey--and sensed none. Pity, there were usually other creatures nearby a source of water that were quite delicious, but it was apparent that some lioness had taken all the available food.

"I suspect you enjoy female company because you have your own 'pride', perhaps, and because you like it when food is brought to you?" He glared at the orange beast, smile still placed on his maw. Male lions especially had always been the ones he had seen lazing around, waiting for the lionesses to cater to them, and he never understood such a gluttonous position.

Only sparing a disdainful glance, he noted the word lion with more than little matter. Taking both pleasure at the recognition that the wild dog displayed, but a rumble of displeasure passed through him at his next words.

Remembering the earlier portion of their conversation, the lion sought to explain, "I fear, distraction is one of my many faults. However, it has already proven that it can also be used effectively, already casting you into such thinking that I am possibly .. prey?" The last part was purely mockery, since it was recognized by many that lions were a large portion of the upper food chain.

"Ah." he acknowledged, his gaze not straying from the previous object as he licked his paw delicately. "Perhaps I was mistaken," Arcanine allowed himself a brief moment of humbleness before continuing, "but it was kind of you to give thought to such prey."

"Your presence will do, if only to satisfy this lingering boredom. In fact, I'll even forgive you for the lack of ability to turn into a female. " Arcanine could feel a smile tugging on the corner of his lips. He hadn't met anyone who amused him in such a way before.

"But if I were that sort, would you find me hunting here by myself? Doesn't the matter of having females bring my food completely contradict my previous words from earlier?" Letting out a bark of laughter, he lifted his gaze towards the other, looking him straight in the eye. "I cannot say, I appreciate for such a position, especially since both females and males," Coughing to emphasize, "have much better things to do than serve to each others whim by servitude."

"Prey..." the large wild dog considered momentarily, eyeing the lion almost as if he was taking it seriously. No doubt lions proved to overpower many of his own kind throughout the savannas, but it was obvious that this particular lion had not a single sliver of notice that the wild dog he had encountered was more capable than one would think.

However, this wild dog kept to his general rule of not provoking a lion, for it would be an incredible waste of energy and work if he had actually taken one on; that he had known for sure. "Don't get me wrong, lion, it would be great if you were in fact... less overbearing so that I could feast without so much as a second swipe to the throat. But I would rather not dare to go against you now; I'm afraid I've grown a bit tired and too lazed after seeing your kind romping about mindlessly through this area." He yawned out a brief sigh of bored distaste before finishing this thought, "Like pests gathering on festering carcass..."

He paused and reflected on the orange lion's response before offering his own, "Perhaps you had already gotten your fair share's worth of game from your pride and wished to feed on more, give in to the impulse of greed... what most lions do. But I suppose I have misjudged your character, lion." A smile was added during his last words.

Eye met eye as the canine's own red gaze narrowed, accepting the other lion's engagement. He kept his stare undaunted, sure of his higher position than the other's. However, when the stranger spoke of his position, the black wild dog had to hesitate to reply, as the other's statement almost put a sense of respect for a lion in his heart, which was a tad bit too new for him.

"A rogue, then, you are..." he grinned, exposing sharp fangs that made him seem a notch under devilish. "Well then, my apologies; apparently I have yet to stumble upon official grounds of a true lion pride. Just the other day, I suspect I came onto the most peculiar lioness... She did not belong to one, either. I assumed, by her coat colors, however, she needed one so she wouldn't be so dreadful as far as hunting went, with her obvious tones amongst the grass-hunting grounds and all, but somehow she manages to get by. I suppose when I think of it now, I should have brought a quick ending to her less than blessed life," he mused.

"Am glad to have met your acquaintance, however; independence reigns true to me. On the other side, if I were to have others serve under my rule... That would be another story," the black canine chuckled at his last statement.

Arcanine's gaze didn't stray.. wondering if the wild dog if he was seriously contemplating the nation. That would certainly be interesting to watch - if they ever had the chance to face off. Ignoring the reference to 'his kind, He only saw to fit to reply with a dry expression, "Ah, I suppose that your kind isn't at a complete loss then. Not all of you have rocks for brains, it seems." Arcanine remarked carelessly, in a rather tepid way.

His eyes alighted, when the male responded to his reply with a distasteful insinuation... Arcanine didn't bother to deny the wild dog's words, having seen the same idiocy that he was speaking of in his own hunts. Rather, he was simmering at the lions that had given that impression. The thought of idiots sullying their reputation..

However, he decided that he could understand the wild dog's words and perspective, when the other admitted tentative admission of wrongness. After all, he wasn't out to change his perspective on the useless mass that Arcanine had to call 'his kind'. "I won't argue about other lions, but as long as you understand that I don't do so."

He was pleased to see that the dog didn't shy from his gaze, the glimmer of satisfaction was clear. That said more about his character than words could convey. "Indeed, you've guessed right." Arcanine returned the grin with a grin of his own, but implied casualness. "No pride, no obligations." He stretched lazily now, relaxing his guard.

He was experienced to know when one was about to embark on a story, patiently listening to the other. An smile curved on his lips, amused at the wild dog's audacity. But he didn't miss the wild dog's possible implication of his own inconspicuous colors. Had he been born a mere black, or brown, it would have been much easier to blend in with his surroundings. But he had learned to accept what life gave him, the good parts and bad. "Perhaps, she won't have the misfortune of meeting you again." The male offered to the other's musings, while wondering what he would have done if he had met her. Ignore her, maybe. Anything else would have required too much wasted effort.

He couldn't help but share the same chuckle, believing the same ideals himself. He was a rogue too, eh? Well, that pride wouldn't certainly let him bow down to anyone."When put that way.. that makes it hard to deny." He liked this wild dog even more now. He had pride, delivering threats on one hand while conversing with a lion on the other. But his mind wasn't half-bad either. ".. You'll do well. A shame, that not many wild dogs adhere to the same things that you do. It's make this place a lot more interesting.."

Despite the close insult the lion offered, the large canine wasn't compelled to answer it with anything but his own dry expression. While it was clear to him that wild dogs were the best species, there were some who fell under the threshold for that recognition. Those were the dogs that weren't fit for his acknowledgment, and it was best that he hadn't seen enough to feel a sense of loss at what his kind were up to nowadays. It was already too late for his true own kind...

It was a bit unusual for a lion to act this civil and composed like he, and so the black canine was able to actually give the orange piece of fur a decent amount of his attention. He nodded ever so slightly to the other's words and noticed the lion making himself comfortable, yet he himself stayed in place. While the encounter wasn't testing him, it would definitely not get him to lounge around with a lion. He felt his time near drawing to a close, though it wasn't the right moment to call upon it yet. For the time being, at least the lion was taking in his words. And so, he had more to offer.

"Well, rogue lion," he began again after the responses, "I suppose I'll offer my gratitude to your well thoughts. And no, not many, but there were some... And there will be some. There will be work, but working to meet an end is part of what builds strength. And don't worry, I make it a strict rule to not mess with lions. Our paws can't be soiled by the blood of your kind too often..."

He raised a paw to his mouth, imitating the act of cleaning it, "It's just not very delicious."

"I suppose that I'll accept that gratitude." It was his turn to return the arrogance, wondering how a canine could amass the confidence and courage to stand up to a creature much bigger than he was. However the origin, it was amusing -- and nearly worthwhile for him to have stayed this long to have conversed.

"I shall be interested to see where your endeavors take you." Whether the canine succeeded or failed, it would make no different to the male lion. But if he ultimately succeeded in his efforts, to make his ambitions become reality, then Arcanine would be nothing less than impressed.

As the wild dog mimicked him, Arcanine knowing when he was being mocked. But as long as the wild dog knew his place, Arcanine didn't take any offense. "How fortunate, as I don't prefer your kind either." They were simple too much trouble and not entirely worth the effort.

He stood up, walking a few steps away before he reached a small cliff overlooking a path several feet down. Jumping down with the grace customary for a lion, he looked over his shoulder to reveal a good-natured grin,"This is where we part ways." He harbored no illusion that they were friends, or anything close. At the best, they were like-minded individuals, despite being different species. At worst, a acquaintance between two prideful males that conceded to different views.

"Be careful. It would be a shame if you did die by the hands of another lion." It didn't seem likely.. but the world was a vast place with other lions and creatures with temperaments or skills that Arcanine wouldn't dare underestimate.

"But if you live, we may see other again." Perhaps, just perhaps. With his farewell, Arcanine left.

It was easy for the black wild dog to see that the two were testing each other in their company. It was almost a standstill. Pity the lion knew his place.

Red eyes watched on as the orange lion simply walked away to the small dip in the landscape, jumping below as he walked. He nodded to the departure; he had more things to do than mess around with a burly lion.

When the lion offered his words of farewell, he listened in silence, and a grin came on his face. It was amusement; he was amused that the lion could offer such a suggestion. It was playful banter, of course, and out came a ringing laughter from the large canine's mouth, echoing down into the lower hill on which the lion descended.

Yes, yes... He will live. He will live a very long life.
