The morning was crisp and cool, near dawn as the light from the sun just began to sweep across the plains. Powdered snow glimmered in the light as a group of stallions stood in a meadow, two engaged in active battle while a larger more docile one stood off to the side to watch. The elder was none other than Twilight, as he observed his two sons engage in friendly combat. My, had Aiolos and his sister grown into capable stallion and mare. He was proud of all his children; Marius was experiencing fatherhood and they seemed to be doing well. He couldn't have asked for more in life.

"Aiolos! Use your speed to get to his underside, a prime vulnerability point!" Twilight yelled across to his youngest son, watching the stallion perk up to listen to his father's words before putting his mind frame back into battle.

"Thats not going to help you, Aiolos!" Zevach grumbled, sending a lame kick in the direction of his brother's shoulder to knock the stallion down to the snowy ground. Smirking in delight, the teal stallion held his head high and looked over to his father's smiling face; feeling a bit of pride swell in his chest. He and his father still were not on the best of terms but things were getting better now that they were on speaking terms. Once Twilight had filled him in on the bravery of Aiolos in taking on a Kalona to save his sister; Zevach and Twilight had been compelled to teach the stallion the best of their worlds. Fighting techniques of Zevach and the wisdom and knowledge of Twilight...they knew that Cicely was now a prime target for any predators with her limp leg - and even though they wish it not true it was just a fact of life.

Aiolos had always expressed how much he wanted to protect his sister from anything the world had to throw at her; and now here they were. Training the young stallion to his full potential. "Always be attentive, Aiolos. One moment of distraction could cost you your life. Always focus, always think a step ahead." Zevach bellowed, snorting and galloping to where his brother lay, attempting to stomp onto his side. "If you're going to protect, you gotta put your entire soul into the ordeal, or else you'll fail!"

"I...wont fail!" Aiolos yelled, pushing off the ground with his hooves as he rolled over to his back and dodged the stomp of his elder brother's hooves. Scrambling to his feet; he knew it was hard to stay in such a determined focus when there was so much on his mind as of late! Yet one thing was certian; he wouldn't let anyone walk over Cicely again....he almost didn't make it in time; fate was fortunately on his side. He wanted her to be able to fend for herself, but if that failed he would be there to end it for sure! He was greatful for his Father and Brothers sacrifice of their time to help train him and wasn't going to let either of them down!

The belly....must go for the belly! He spoke in his mind, before launching foreward in a run around his brother, faster and faster he went. He could tell Zevach was having a hard time keeping track of him from the way he kept trying to n** at him but luckily he could not land a bite. When Aiolos was convinced he was a step ahead, the stallion thrust his body against the side of his elder brother and tossed him to thr ground, running back with a joyous laugh to his father and nuzzled him. "Like that, papa??" He asked, smiling to Zevach who heaved himself off the ground. "Did I do good??"

Ezriel had taken off with her son, Rue. Given, the white and red haired colt had gone willingly, much to (she was sure) Ez's chagrin, there was nothing she could say to stop the pair. It was Ezriel's right as a father to be in the company of his children, was it not? Still, Eponine hadn't been so blind to see the favoritism of Rue. For some odd reason, the little one didn't seem to know what to think of her even though she had been the one to give him birth, even though she had been the one to be there when he had first been born.

Maybe, like the young red one that trudged sullenly by her side, he knew too. Maybe, like little Cassiel, he blamed her too.

So perhaps it was for the best she didn't often get to see the young, daydreaming stallion. Perhaps it was best she took care of the young white and crimson lady that seemed to begrudge the entire world her birth. No matter how hard she tried to coddle the young one, it seemed as if nothing were to shake light on to the little girls spirit.

Cassiel hated her, as far as Eponine could understand, and forever it broke her heart.

Though she had avoided her family for so long, though she had all but disappeared from her family's gaze, desperation drove the young mare on. No matter how unsure she felt, no matter how ashamed she felt of herself, she couldn't stay in hiding forever. Ezriel had rejected her, but then, he had never 'chose' her to begin with - so it was no surprise. Rue had fallen after his fathers footsteps, which had been a blowhard to the mare, and young Cassiel broke her heart through her distance and angst. Oh how she had failed her children without ever meaning to. . .

Failure was all she was now.

But she couldn't begrudge Cassiel a chance to meet her family. Even if the young one wanted nothing to do with her as a mother, didn't mean that she should be deprived of getting to know her grandfather or uncles. Besides, Eponine realized far too late that she had missed out on being with her family during one of the hardest moments of her life - she had given birth cold and alone, and oh how a terrible time it had been.

Even if they sneered at her, even if they thought poorly of her judgement, they were still her family. And Eponine needed someone, needed something to love her - even if it were only out of obligation of blood.

"C-c-come on, love," she murmured, trudging over the snow powdered incline. Ears and nose told her who awaited over the small hill, she could hear their carefree voices, she could hear their antics and games. And oh how it broke her heart that things couldn't have been different.

Ragged and worn, the young mare hesitated only a moment as she reached the peak of the hill. Softly she nudged the little white and crimson beauty before her, assuring her that it was safe to walk. Standing close, she helped the little one down through the soft snow - it might be slippery, and she didn't want Cassiel to fall and hurt herself! Eyes staring only at her daughter, and the ground, Eponine refused to look up and face her family.

The little filly didn't know where they were going, nor did she rightly care. Wherever Eponine took her, she'd follow, even if her little heart yearned to be away. Yes, she understood Eponine tried to love her, and did her best to be gentle and kind - but Cassiel couldn't forget what she had heard within the contents of her basket - she couldn't forget what the darkness whispered to her, consumed her with.

Rue and she were unwanted, undesired, and loathed.

Though she kept such heavy things from her brother, the little pink and white female found it difficult to believe Eponine's gentle gestures and kindness. Yes, instinct told her this was her mother, and Cassiel wanted nothing more than to latch on to her with all the affection and love her little body could handle! But. . . . it wasn't meant to be.

Not yet.

She couldn't put love in to someone who didn't want to love her back, and so the little one strayed away and often ambled by herself. A freak such as she, a monster and plague of goodness couldn't possibly be touched by the most wonderful emotion in the world - love.

For unloved as she had been born from, was as unloved as the little one was sure she would end.

Voices broke through, and as they reached the peak of the small hill, she stopped. For a moment she hung close to her mothers legs, unsure about approaching. Whoever was down there - strangers, and three of 'em - caused Cassiel to waver. Shyness crept up and the ebony haired girl dipped her head, pinning back her ears.

Still. . . her mothers words and gentle nudge forced her to continue down the slope. Oh brother.

Whoever they were, what did they want? Would they eat her? Maybe. Would they take her away so she wouldn't have to place her mother in misery? Maybe. Cassiel could only hope. For day in and day out, all she saw was sadness from the blue mare known as 'Mommy'. . . . And the only reasoning she could see was because of her.

If she left, maybe happiness might return.

"See...now thats the way to do it!" Zevach grinned, perhaps this whole family bonding thing wasn't as sickening as he originally thought it to be. The stallion had learned of his parent's sickness, how his father was plauged by the corruption of his own moral beliefs. It was a lesson that even Zevach couldn't give a clear answer too and it allowed the son to get a more indepth look at the working order of his father's mind and how he didn't wish for his son to be put in such a circumstance. He could understand now...but at the time the stallion could remember how angry and confrontational he was. He was aware his father knew he was sorry; he just wish he could tell him so.

Perhaps soon to come.

Perking his ears softly as he could have sworn he heard the approach of others, Zevach sent his eyes wandering across the plains. Perhaps mother was going to accompany them with Cicely?

Yet when he finally located the source of the sounds his ruby orns went wide with shock; it wasn't who he thought it was, was it? Eponine? When was the last time he'd seen her!? Yet one thing caused the stallion to frown in a bout of confusion...what was that little red and white foal doing with her?

Squinting slightly, he could tell from here that neither the filly or Eponine looked very happy about coming to meet them...how odd. Looking back to his father, and motioning towards the approaching femmes. "Father....Eponine is here." He spoke, before casting his gaze back into the pair. He wanted to run and find out what the hell was going on...but by the looks of it she needed to see her father first before being onslaughted with Zevach's questions and concerns.

Hold up...who was that? Aiolos blinked and cocked his head slightly at the sight of the white and blue hued mare and the small red and white one making their way quite grudgily down the slope towards them. "Papa...who's that? Is that....Epp......Eponine?" He blinked up to his larger father to have the stallion nod. So that was his older sister! Wow....was she ever pretty; just like Cicely!

Walking over to Zevach he stood beside his brother in wonder....he wasn't sure what was going on and figured it would be best to wait it out till he could grasp onto what was taking place. None the less, the stallion was happy to have finally met some more of his brethren; now he only had one more to go; and that was their brother Marius!

"What....?" Twilight blinked over to Zevach, before following his son's gesture to the hill where none other than his first daughter and a little filly wandered down the snowy banks. He could feel his heart clench in his chest for he could hardly remember the last time they'd been together and as much as he enjoyed the new company of Zevach and the two new foals....he did miss Eponine and Marius dearly.

"E....Eponine!" The ebony stallion yelled out, wasting no time in gliding into a gallop up the slope to meet with the two...immediately pressing up against Eponine and wrapping his neck around her own in a hug. "Oh Eponine, how I missed you so! You haven't visited in so long I worried, but I know you are more than a capable mare." Lifting his head to nuzzle her cheek and lip at her forehead, he dropped his own cerulean orbs to gaze into her own....something was wrong; he could most definately tell.

"You dare not even look me in the eyes, sweetheart. What is the matter?"

He knitted his brows in concern, before shifting his gaze to the little filly beside her. Even the foal looked as sad as Eponine....but oddly she shared the same patterns as Eponine; only with red and black hair....oddly like his youngest daughter Cicely. "Who is this stunning little girl, hmmm?" He smiled, the one ever warm and comforting that he used to sport daily untill the incident; now it was coming back to him. "Can you tell me your name, little one?"

Looking her over...Twilight wasn't a dumb stallion; and with the news of Marius's foals....he had his own assumptions before looking to his daughter once more. "I don't mean to assume things, Eponine....but....is she yours?"
PostPosted: Wed Jan 02, 2008 5:15 pm

It didn't take them long to realize who it was. Pity. Eponine's stomach twisted and churned with such knowledge, her mind racing as she tried to figure out how to best approach the subject. Would they know. . . ? Or would they think she was but watching the little one? Though she had a somewhat similar coat to her own, the colours hardly matched. In fact, there was no swirl or ounce of blue within the little one, so it was easy to assume they were far from related.

Her eyes began to blurr, the familiar sting of tears threatening to spill out even before her father approached. He had to know - something within her heart knew even before he admitted his assumptions - she couldn't hide Cassiel forever. . . .

And Eponine didn't want to.

But it was admitting her failure, admitting her mistakes that hurt the most. Though it was no fault of the little one beside her, Eponine could only imagine the hurt and pain she had caused everyone - her beloved foals, Ezriel, and every one within the small herd. In fact, so far away she hadn't had a chance to bond with her baby siblings and they were all but adults! Piece by piece, layer by layer, her heart broke. . . .

It was one thing to ruin her own world, but to take everyone else down with her?

Selfish she was - Selfish and bad!

Twilight reached her quickly, not hesitating to wrap his neck around her own. The tears she had tried so hard to fight broke at such affection, and she silently let the tears fall. One by one, for every hurt she suffered, for every hurt she suffered them. . . But it wasn't enough. There weren't enough tears in the world to cleanse her of her sins and cruelties - especially to those of her own flesh and blood.

"Oh P-p-papa," she choked, burying her face in to his dark coat. Part of her old self stirred, soaking up the affection as if she'd been deprived. In a sense, the young mare had been - but it was only her own fault, truly. They couldn't stop loving her because of . . .

No, it wasn't Cassiel or Rue's fault - not at all!

And oh how her heart went out to the two she had birthed. But she still regretted their circumstances - they deserved a competent mother, and to have a father that loved them. Even if Ezriel loathed her figure and form, he should at least spend time with his daughter too. Maybe soon - maybe if he ever returned. . . .

Cassiel blinked and stepped to the side as a large, black and white haired stallion approached. He didn't look much at all like Eponine, she decided, nor much like herself either. Still, his hooves and legs were painted. . . . kind of like Rue. Her black gaze hardened slightly as he turned to stare at her . . . what did he want? Stunning? Stunning? Who was . . . ? Surely he couldn't be speaking about her - the plaguelet.

Glancing shyly over her shoulder, and realizing that the only little one around was her, she shook off the compliment easily. He was wrong and just being nice - there was absolutely nothing stunning about her. Averting her gaze, much like Eponine, the little filly heaved a small sigh. At first, it seemed as if she refused to speak - her darkness told her to be still and hold her tongue but the little one refused.

No one cared much about her name so she might as well entertain the bloke. Right?

"Cassiel." There - that was all he needed to know. The young one's voice was slight and small, almost raspy as if she spoke in a whisper. Though she didn't inherit her mothers stutter, she did inherit problems with her volume. Her own ears twitched and she slid down to her belly on the hill. If they were going to be here awhile, she might as well get comfy.

Eponine said nothing as Twilight spoke his assumptions. Lifting her head away, she let her white bangs fall over her face to hide her tears - she didn't want the little one to see. On top of it, she didn't want Cassiel to believe that she didn't want her or wasn't proud. Any regret she felt wasn't for the children but for her own inability to do right. "Yes, P-p-papa. She's. . . . She's m-m-mine." Though she spoke the words strongly, she almost flinched and dropped her gaze for the umpteenth time.

No, she couldn't look her father in the eye. She couldn't witness such pain and hurt and fault.

Oh dear..... Eponine.

The only pain and regret the large stallion could harbor for his daughter was that he couldn't hold back her tears. He hated when any of his kids were in pain, for it felt like it cut at his own flesh too; and right now the wounds were deep. Drawing his eyes to the little filly for a moment longer her stood tall and let the blue mare bury her face in his pelt. He would be strong for her for it was obvious it was a difficult and weak moment for her. It had been for the entire family it seemed, Marius being thrust into fatherhood at a young age like Cosette and he had....Zevach and his actual coming back to the family he so despised as a colt. And now Eponine....his sweet daughter being thrust into motherhood too early it seemed.

He only wished he could have known; and maybe he would have been able to make it better somehow.

"I see." He spoke, nearly having to strain his ears to her the little filly even speak. Cassiel huh? It was a pretty name; and suited the little one well even as she seemed void to everything around her as she plunkered down into the snow. Why was she so uncaring? It was a different change from his own kids....Marius who was reserved but highly kind and smart; Zevach who was rambunctious and headstrong; Sweet as sugar Eponine, Happy go lucky and persevering Cicely and of course his hyperactive and gold hearted son Aiolos.

Perhaps this was a trait of the father?

"Eponine, look at me." He spoke, nuding her chin up to catch her gaze...hopefully she would see the undying love and devotion he had for her; for the poor mare could do nothing wrong in his eyes. Although her new family including herself seemed to think was much....all of this was not her fault. Not by a long shot.

"I can see by the look in your eyes that the father didn't stick around...Are there any more?" He inquired, he did not no the circumstances of all of this but he wasn't about to stick his nose in fresh wounds. When Eponine was ready she would tell him; be it sooner, later or never. "None the less, you should have come home if you were having troubles....You know we would have done everything in our grasp to have helped you my love. Thats what's family's for.....we're always going to be here for you, through thick and thin." And boy...was this thick.

Turning his gaze down to Cassiel; he knew that her coat definately wasn't thick from the snow....even as a foal it wouldn't be nearly as thick to keep out the cold for long. "Cassiel....come on up. We'll get moving shortly. You'll catch a cold if you stay down there for too long, my dear." He spoke lovingly; as if she were but one of his own foals.

Nudging her side gently till she rose, the stallion put on his best smile and cocked his head a bit to the side. "It is a pleasure to meet my Grandaughter...I'm not sure if you know but i'm Twilight. Your Grandpa. How would you feel about staying with me for a while? We have lots of sweet berries to eat, and you can spend time with your uncles? They're down there, Aiolos is only a bit older than you; I'm sure he would love someone to hang out with?"

Oh yes, Aiolos would flip for another playmate; for he was still very much a child. Looking back to Eponine, he nuzzled her cheek once more before placing his nose on her own. "Please....come back and stay with us for a while. I won't force you; for you're old enough to live your own life....but just untill you feel you can step out on your own? Your mother would love to see you again, and perhaps it will do Cassiel some good to have family around again?" He inquired; oh how he hoped she would say yes.
PostPosted: Wed Jan 02, 2008 6:05 pm

If her heart hadn't been shattered before, it was in pieces now. The fact that Twilight said nothing of her mistake and choice, the fact he didn't condemn or blame or judge - oh how was she blessed to have such wonderful parents? And why couldn't she be just as loving to little Rue and Cassiel?

Oh, it wasn't that she didn't love them! Far from it - it surprised the young mare just how open her heart was to the pair. Though she had fretted and worried and even voiced her uncertainties after their birth, she loved them dearly. It bothered her that her son wasn't around - how was she supposed to bond with him if he were away? And Cassiel too, for that matter? The children should have stayed together, but such was the fate of life. . . .

Despite her deep depression and sadness, despite knowing her life would never be the same, Eponine felt a faint glimmer of hope. The words her father spoke ran true, and part of her felt more foolish than ever. How could she have doubted their love and affection? How could she have believed that they might turn her away, that they might find her unworthy because of her condition?

Oh, how her heart yearned to come back home. To give Cassiel as much love in the world as she had received, to introduce her to the touch of kindness that had worked its magic so wonderfully on the small family. It would do Eponine some good, certainly - and maybe, just maybe, it might be the right medicine for her most beloved!

Slowly, ever so slowly, aqua eyes reached up and found the gaze of her father - the rock of the family, the foundation. Though he had been a bit scarce earlier, he seemed to have flourished now and oh how she adored him. He had always been there for her, for any of them, whenever they came to call. And it seemed as if that quality she loved him for had yet to wane or waver.

Nose to nose, she almost shuddered as she was washed with such love and affection - the devotion to his family, to her and little Cassiel was too much to bear. She didn't deserve it, oh no, but her darling daughter surely did. Even though Eponine made her mistakes didn't mean that her daughter or son had to suffer such repercussions. Her voice was soft, gentle when she finally managed to speak, though a shadow passed over that moments light that had almost resurfaced.

"Th-there is. . . . Rue. He - - He w-w-went with his f-f-father." It was all she could say at the moment, with Cassiel so near. Oh, she didn't begrudge the colt's choice but she did wish to know her son just as much as she hoped to know her daughter. It truly wasn't going to be easy with him away.

Cassiel blinked and almost cringed as the dark furred stallion suddenly nudged her. She had expected him to bite, but her dark orbs flickered curiously when he merely encouraged her to rise to her hooves. Yes, it was cold, but the little one didn't want to complain or cause a commotion - it wasn't her right.

Ears still pinned, she involuntarily stepped closer to Eponine, as if trying to hide behind her legs. Peering up at Twilight - Grandpa? That was grandpa? - the little filly wasn't sure why he spoke to her so sweetly. It reminded her of how Eponine spoke but. . . . but why? Why was he being so kind to her when they were but strangers?

Black voids drifted off him to the small duo below. They were dark and she could easily see their relation to the large-one towering before them. Still . . . if they were so black and blue and why was she so red and white? It was as if she stood out like a sore thumb, it was as if she were truly a mistake.

For shame.

"Grand. . Pa. Though it was foreign to her lips, the little one whispered out the name. Twilight was family then. . . . even if they looked so odd and strange. Poor him, the darkness within her spirit mourned. To be cursed with a little one just as she.

Dropping her gaze, she took a few steps away from Eponine as if to begin her decent down the hill. Might as well get introductions over with, right? The sooner they knew her, the sooner they could loathe her, and the sooner life could get back to just her mother and herself.

No need to infect an entire herd, even if it they were allegedly related.

Eponine heaved a small sigh, her darkened gaze transforming to one more of hurt as she watched her daughter begin the descent. Why couldn't the little one be happy . . .? The darkness was deep and thick - and she knew exactly where part of it stemmed. It wasn't the girls fault, nor was it Ezriel's. . . .

But broken blood seemed to burn deep in the white and crimson stallions lineage and was most apparent in little Cassiel. Nudging her father one last time, Eponine gave a weak and faint smile. The light didn't touch her eyes, but the emotion on her voice was thick enough that her thanks and appreciation made it unnecessary. "Oh Papa I . . . Of c-c-course. Yes. If you'll. . . if you'll h-h-have m-me again, th-that is."

Hadn't he already said as much? Maybe - but she wanted to be sure. Not wanting to draw away from Twilight so soon, she encouraged him to walk with her and follow the little Cassiel down. How rude of her - she had kept her brothers waiting.

"Rue....So a Granddaughter and Grandson. I am getting on in my years; aren't I?" He mused softly, trying to keep the spirits good natured for Eponine and Cassiel; both seemed so heavy with baggage that he was sure the wrong comment would have either of them collapse under the weight. He realized that not all families were perfect; heck, he knew first hand as did Eponine...but perhaps this time he would be able to show them just how it was supposed to be.

"I would have kept you locked in the cave if I had a choice, Eponine..so that I would have you and your brothers all to myself and you'd never leave. Yet...I don't think you would have experienced anything and been sad to be cooped up at home. You are welcome for as long as you need us; and then some Eppie." He nuzzled her once more, unable to actually believe that his daughter was coming back to him again! It seemed that all that was missing was Marius; but for the fact he seemed to have his own family now Twilight could appreciate him being a bit busy.

Yet that was all in retrospect untill he heard the small ushering of Grandpa from Cassiel's lips. Oh how proud he was to hear that...Twilight knew nothing was ever lost when confronted with a stubborn resolution. It might take a while, but the large stallion was prepared for the long haul. Nodding to Eponine as he slowly began to walk back with her towards her siblings, Twilight kept her gaze on the little filly; trying to imagine what her brother could possibly look like.

Oh, oh! They were coming finally! Perhaps now he would get some answers, since all this waiting around doing nothing was killing him inside. Looking to Zevach he gave his elder brother a nudge and trotted towards the little filly; pretty darn excited to have someone new to play with - none the less what appeared to be a little neice! It was strange, he thought, that he was just entering adulthood and already he was an uncle two fold! He guessed that was to come from having older siblings though, although he was a bit curious to why Zevach hadn't followed suit to have foals too.

Perhaps he would ask him soon.

Upon nearing the little red and white filly, he noted that she too had black hair like his sister; and apparently a uncle of his!

"Hello there! Its so nice to finally meet you!" Okay, well he didn't know she existed till now; but he'd been waiting a lot of minutes for her to come over! "I'm Aiolos; and I think i'm one of your uncles! Its nice to see someone in the family with black hair too; my sister will be happy that she isn't the only one."

Leanding down, Aiolos didn't think much of it as he nuzzled her with the utmost of affection; being that he was natually loving of everything...with exception of that Kalona that hurt Cicely. He could find no love for that blue harpy.

"I think you're going to like staying with us!" Aiolos assumed, secretly having been easedropping thanks to his good hearing. "There's lots of fun things to do around the cave, I can show them to you unless you're tired from walking in the snow you know. Must be tiring being small; but you'll grow out of it soon like I did! x3"

Oh yes, breathe. Inhaling from his excited speech, Aiolos decided to keep his trap shut for a moment and nuzzled her a bit more; adjusting her hair a bitto keep it as pretty as it should be.

"Aiolos; you're probably smothering the girl; take it easy." Zevach warned, stepping up a few moments later to get a good look at her since it would be impossible with his little brother nuzzling all over her like a fly to the light. Looking her over when he stepped back for a second he kept his face stoic while examining her to find out one detail which caused him to tense. Those eyes....he only knew one other soquili to have those appearing viodless eyes; yet even with Ezriel....Zevach could see the hopelessness and devastation in her little eyes and it nearly sent a chill down his spine.

It had to be his....unless it was one of his siblings that he talked about. It would be highly rare to find another red, white and black eyed soquili wandering the lands.

He could not say anything to the little filly in fear that he might just make her worse off than she seemed to be feeling; nodding his head to her to leave her in his brother's care while he made his way to Eponine and his father. He tried not to look too angry, yet he could not help the rise of temperature and quickening pace of his heart.

Nodding to his father, he looked deadset at Eponine with a serious expression on his face. "Father...I need to speak to Eponine; alone." Luckily for him, Twilight sent a bit of a 'take it easy then' look to him before wandering back to see Aiolos and Cassiel.

"Eponine....I'm sorry if this is hard, but I need to know who is her father. Who is the stallion that did this.....He did not have strange spikes; did he?" He asked quietly, his tail flicking with agitiation in each sway.

Christ what he would do if he found out it was Ezriel that knocked up his sister and abandoned her and this filly....

Cassiel was almost overwhelmed. She had expected . . . . well, all right, she didn't know what to expect but she SURELY hadn't thought to be overwhelmed by a strange black and white one. It seemed both of the Non-Grandpa's had been touched with a funny swirl pattern, which was easy to pick out, though their base colours were quite different. One more green than black, it was easy to tell they were siblings. . . except the young one hadn't a clue on how she fit in to the family. All the colours surrounding her were of night or ice - and yet here she sat, red as could be. Strange. . . . even Ezriel wasn't as soiled in crimson as she. Oh well. Cassiel knew within her heart of hearts she was never meant to 'fit in'.

As Aiolos descended upon her, chattering about this and that, the little foal flinched. Uncles? Black haired sister? Cassiel felt a smidgen overwhelmed, and almost gasped as she was suddenly nuzzled. What on earth was that? If he was trying to eat her he was forgetting to use his teeth - the most important part! Oh bother. . .

Flinching, she all but collapsed in the snow, rolling over underneath Aiolos nose. Whoever he was talked - a lot - and she just didn't know how to respond. A cave - what cave? And why would he ever want to show her anything? Didn't he know. . .? Silent, the little one let her dark orbs burn up and in to Aiolos, a flash of fear burning through them.

Intimidated some, she struggled to find the first comfort she could - and as Mother was off to one side, there was only one place to go. Squirming, she pushed herself between Twilight's legs and cowered, glancing over her shoulder uncertainly at Aiolos.

Rue and him would get along great. . . . but that was the reason it scared her. The talkative one might become Ezriel's second favorite and also be taken away - she didn't want to get attached only to have him disappear on her too.
". . . . . Hi. . . "

It came out a mere whisper, but that was her own cursed fate. It didn't help her unnaturally soft voice was riddled with something softer - past the indifference and dismal nature was something that could almost be labeled as shy. . . and that's exactly what she was.

Thankfully though, stuck between this Grandpa Things legs, she couldn't help but feel a little better. The darkness that had overwhelmed her soul hadn't expected such a reception and had receded ever so slightly. . . .

For now.

Given time it would return with a vengeance, like waves lapping eternally on the shore.

Eponine had kept a close eye on how Aiolos reacted around her baby - though she didn't expect anything to go wrong, she understood - somewhat - Cassiel's fragile nature. On top of that, she hadn't had much time or exposure around Aiolos - this was the first time meeting her baby brother and he was all but full grown!

But her concerns over Cassiel were temporary misplaced as Zevach approached. Her throat went dry and any assurance she had gathered from Twilight disappeared in a puff of smoke. Between her two brothers, she felt most drawn and close to her over-protective and often misunderstood sibling - Zevach. How often had he been there for her. . .? He treated her like gold despite his rough exterior . . .

And now?

Now what would it be like?

He didn't look happy and she could feel the tension radiating through him. Was it anger and frustration at . . .at her? Probably - there was no other source that could be at blame or fault. Though her tears had dried earlier, to see the figure of her brother so stern caused her to take an involuntary step back. Dropping her head, the tears renewed and she bit back a sob.

Even if he might be upset at the father, what could he do? Besides - she truly didn't want him to pick a fight with Ezriel - her brother would be slaughtered! Oh, how disappointed in her he had to be - the baby sister messing up. . . . and big time! Marius at least still had the mother in his life, still had some feelings for her. . . .

But Eponine? What did she have to show but a terrified daughter and an endless river of regret and remorse?

"N-n-n-now-now-now," she stammered softly, "Now d-d-don't be m-m-mad, Z-Z-Z-Zevach - it *sniffle* It w-w-wasn't his fault n-n-n-none. He'd b-b-been upset and I ap-p-proached and . . . . " Oh, what else was there to say? If she had but left him alone, if she had but tried to give him the space he desired maybe what had taken place wouldn't have happened. Maybe everything would have been different.

There was no way guilt could be pinned on the white and crimson haired mutants shoulders. None at all! He had wanted to be left alone - she hadn't picked up the hint or obliged.

Gulping back another sob, she shuddered, only too late realizing that her brother spoke his appearance true. Jerking her head up, she looked at him with eyes wide - confirmation enough. Still, as the few tears welled up and spilled down her cheeks, she dropped her gaze just as quickly and nodded. ". . . How d-d-d-do you kn-know?"

Another shudder welled through her and she could only imagine what might happen. Desperately, Eponine jerked forward and all but fell down before her brother, burying her face between his hooves, tears rolling freely. "D-d-d-don't bl-blame Ezriel - it w-w-w-was me, all me!" She begged, pleading with Zevach to understand. She knew her brother to be a hot head, and knew he wasn't happy with any of them. Especially her. But as far as she could see, the white horned stallion had nothing to feel guilty over - the deed was done, she could have said no and rejected but she didn't. She went along with it, smitten as ever. . .

She was the fool between the pair. Ezriel was innocent.

Blinking back a bit of suprise at just how, well, cowardly the filly was as her body stumbled back and into the snow; the stallion was all but puzzled. Was he really so scary? He didn't even have any scary wings or scowls or looks that would make him something to be feared....so what was going on!? Lifting his gaze to his father as he had approached leaving Zevach and Eponine behind, the young male watched as Cassiel dove between Twilight's legs and cast him a small glance.

Allowing his ears to sink alongside his head, for once the thoughts ran nearly as fast as he could through his mind. "Dad....what's wrong? Am I....scary?" He nearly whined out, lowering his own head to try and peer at the little red and white filly through the blue of his father's legs.

Or was there something more deeply wrong with the little one than even he could comprehend?

A smile stretched onto his lips though, barely catching her small voice. "Hi." He calmly spoke back, before waiting to hear what his papa had to say.

The reception back was a bit warming to his heart, as no less than a moment after he arrived his granddaughter found a home between his legs. Looking down at her, then up to Aiolos he could only piece together that perhaps his youngest's son's more hyper nature had possibly scared the filly right off the bat. It seemed that she wasn't used to many a kind gestures at all seeing her little family was riddled with tragedy.

Almost like this family.....it seems to run through blood. He thought a bit sullenly, seeing that his older kids were born through tragedy...even though their arrival was adored by the at the time young parents. Even Aiolos and Cicely were marked with a bit of tragedy, his poor daughter....the stallion still wasn't able to forgive himself for not keeping a better eye on her. Yet in the end; asides from two sets of grandkids - the family seemed to be getting back on the more positive sides of the scales.

"Aiolos....I doubt she's scared of you. Its just she's not used to such excited and talkative soquili like you. Just give her time, she'll come around. For now though....just take it easy okay?" He smiled the best he could, watching his son's face light up in understanding. "Good....now how about you try and find something for your neice to eat, who knows how long she and Eponine were walking for." Flicking his tail with a chuckle, he watched as Aiolos quickly bounded away, thankful for his son's energy when it came to things like this to get him away from the action when need be.

Now for the bigger problem on hand.

Lowering himself down to curl around the filly in the snow; he used his back legs to slide under her small body to get it off the cold snow. Tossing his head to the side a bit roughly, his hair flipped over to create a bit of a tent that the filly could hide in; shielding her from view in a sea of aqua and ivory. Shifting his eyes back to his older children, the talk didn't seem to be going so well...although he paid respect knowing that he shouldn't intrude when not needed; he also had a difficult time seeing his daughter in such a state.

He would have to find out what was going on afterwards.

"Don't worry about Aiolos, Cassiel. He's just a bit....eccentric." The large stallion mused lightly, dropping his gaze back down to the filly. "So tell me, your mother told me that you did have a brother, what is he like? And your father....you must look a lot like him." He commented, sure that even she could see the difference between the blues of his bloodline and the reds of what must be her father. "Although you have a lot of white on you...most of the girls in my family have the same trait, you're no exception it seems." He smiled warmly, keeping his tone soft and calming.

"I'll tell you a small story, Cassiel. One of your uncles, brother of Zevach and your mother; has had foals too. Your cousins. Marius starting seeing a mare by the name of Neve, she's partial Kalona. They had three kids from what I can remember...i've only really seen them around; but its funny how the bloodline changes. They have purples and reds on their bodies, but they're still family. As time goes by and my children have their children....I'll probably see less and less of myself in them. Yet through it all....i'll know blood runs thicker than colours. And in the end, as well as paying visits to their old timer....thats all I could ever desire out of my family line even when i'm long gone of this world." The ebony male winked to Cassiel, curious what she had to say about all of that.

Staring down at his sister as she dropped herself down onto the snow, her face between his hooves sobbing....Zevach couldn't help but feel like the villain somehow. He hated to see his sister in pain, it had always been that way since their birth. Marius was a joke, even funnier if he'd said that they were even remotely close....so of course Zevach had bonded more with his aloof sister. She could do no wrong in his eyes....so that left that b*****d of a mentor to blame for all of this.....for leaving Eponine alone with a filly no less!

Gritting his teeth together as he closed his eyes, he nodded softly and looked down to her.

"Yes...I do know. No-one knows....but when I was younger, do you remember the day I came back with all those wounds? That was from Ezriel....he's my mentor, my master....he's been training me. I haven't seen him in a long while, since he said that he was testing me with an ambush. I can see now that he's been busy with you." He hissed, of course not at her; which it could have easily been mistaken as if he'd been talking to anyone else. Yet he could say nothing harsh to or about his sister, no, hell would freeze over before then.

Yet that was then.

"No...Eponine. It is his fault. He plays all this wounded crap like he's the star of the show. I don't care what had happened, for its his and your life....but I will NOT stand for some jackass of a stallion to just leave you like this! Even if it is Ezriel; he should damn well know better than that. If he reared foals with you then he damn well better stay with you till they're old enough to fend for themselves!" Stomping his hoof on the ground - away from her head, the stallion backed up, the fur along his spine bristling with anger.

"Cowardly....thats all this is. I will make him own up to his mistakes...just you wait and see oh sister of mine." Zevach smirked, almost devilishly so. His tail flicking as his muscles seemed to flex with the anticipation of confrontation.

Cassiel blinked as the younger swirled male suddenly moved away. It wasn't that Aiolos frightened her. . . he just . . . was frightening. That was all. She truly wasn't used to such an eccentric figure in her life, for though Rue had been goofy and silly, he had quickly been taken under Ezriel's wing and separated from her side. Though she didn't often voice her hurt, she did miss her brother something terrible. In fact, she hardly had a chance to bond with him before he'd disappeared out of her life almost as soon as he'd entered it. He was her brother, the only one that could relate to their strange predicament because he was the only one in it.

But her mother tried. . . and even now, glancing over to where she fallen blue and white form lay she could hear the tears she sobbed. Was she crying because of them? . . . .maybe. That was all Rue and she seemed to be good for. Sighing softly, she jerked as she found herself lifted on to something warmer than snow. The big figure - Grandpa - had shifted and curled around her. The red and white one had almost scrambled to her hooves to move, but quickly realized he was just trying to get them both comfortable.

And it worked.

To not have to lay in the snow, to have a nice warm coated figure next to her full of warmth and a deep voice, well. . . . it was pleasant. Very pleasant. No, it wasn't Ezriel, but then her father was scarce; this was Grandpa, and there was something good about his presence. Something wonderful, dare say, but she'd never admit it if she could help it. Not yet else he might leave her too.

Settling herself a bit more comfortably, the ebony haired filly glanced tentatively up at Twilight as he spoke, her ears focusing on his words instead of straining to hear what her mother and Uncle said. She mulled over the idea and definition of family, contemplated his definition of family and of the half-kalona cousins she apparently had. Did he expect that to make her feel better? Was that in reference to her appearance and blood line? Maybe. . . . But the little one could only think of one thing to say, one way to respond. The more she thought of it, the better it sounded and the better she felt. Yes. . . yes it would do nicely.
"I'll still visit you Grandpa. . . .I like you." There, that made everything better, didn't it? Of course. And though her words were still but a whisper, she felt better for saying it.

A little bit.

If he wanted people to visit, there was no reason she couldn't, or shouldn't. Besides, he kept her warm, and that was nice. Maybe he'd help keep her warm all winter, if she stayed around that long, that was. She couldn't get too comfortable here. . . . She was unwanted, wasn't she?

Darkness warred with light and confusion. How could she be wanted to visit if she was unwanted by everyone and everything else? Ooooh - sometimes the world just didn't make much sense. Her own parents hadn't wanted her, so how could this one? They'd only just met and were strangers after all. He'd change his mind after being subjected to her presence for a few hours, or at best a few days. He'd find out the truth soon enough, even if he were blind to it now. All she had to do was wait.

Question. Brother. Rue. Belatedly she remembered his first question, and figured she might as well respond. Besides, it wasn't everyday she got to speak of her brother, even if there wasn't much to tell. Heaving a sad sigh, she shrugged and gave a small shake of her head.
"His name's Rue. He's a boy and has blacks 'n' reds 'n' whites on him. And he's not like me at all. . . he's. . . " She struggled for a moment, trying to discern how he was different. Finally, she found the best definition in her young mind. "He's better. Happier. Nicer. Father loves him best." /size]And wasn't that the truth! Still - such things couldn't change and there was no way she could redeem herself in Ezriel's eyes; he wasn't around long enough for her to try! A pity. . . .

That was all she wanted.

Shrugging, she flopped against Twilight because she was just plain exhausted and wasn't sure what else to say. She wasn't used to talking so much as she had now. And talking about her brother and father was depressing. She missed them both and it hurt to think they probably didn't think twice about her or Mother. A shame. But maybe it was for the best. "I dun look like Papa. . . . He has spikes and looks like Rue. I'm just ugly red."
And that was that.

Eponine, on the other hand, glanced up as her brother spoke. Though the tears still stained her lashes and left darker blue and white streaks against her furred cheeks, the mare couldn't help but gaze at Zevach. As he stepped back, away from her in his wrath and anger, Eponine couldn't believe her ears. . . Ezriel? His mentor!? Oh, how cruel the world worked! What a mean trick it was, hurting Zevach with such knowledge. . . .

Every passing moment, the results of her silliness became more and more apparent. Why had she done what she had with the stallion? Why had she let herself be swept away by his complimentary words, by his need for someone at his side? Why? Why? WHY!?

And now her own brother wanted to fight him? To make him see? "No! NO!" She half shrieked, struggling to her feet as if her brother was about to chase after him at this very moment. She was close to hysterical, and her broken composure was easily witnessed. "He'll k-k-kill you! I kn-know he will, he'll s-s-s-stop at nothing should you pr-pr-provoke him! Z-Z-Zevach d-d-don't. . . please!" She begged again, stumbling against him as if to block his moment.

She wrapped her neck around his own, burying her muzzle against his shoulder as she cried, a new fear peaking in her heart. Had she put her own sibling in danger because of her actions? Oh gods. . . so it seemed. But what could she say to him to divert him? Zevach always had a temper, and it seemed no different now, no matter if it had been her fault. "Pr-promise me you w-w-won't. . . . I c-c-couldn't t-t-take it if s-s-something happened to you t-t-too!"

Though she didn't doubt her brothers strength, she also knew the darkness with Ezriel. He was still a beast, strong and had that tail that could slice through flesh and bone. If Zevach met up with Ezriel. . . . well. . . . such a battle would be gruesome indeed.

If, she had to admit, short lived.

Oh Cassiel.

If only she could see (and believe) how easily she was wrapping the aging stallion around her little hooves. Then again it seemed he had the most incredible soft spot for mares (back then, now exclusively for Cosette) and of course foals. This odd feeling seemed to only triple when it came to his own family; and much like Eponine and Cicely - Twilight found a part of his heart going out to young Cassiel. Her narrowed views on her short life and her near inability to speak at any sort of normal tone...it only made the stallion want to nuzzle her forever and try and make the pain go away.

Yet years wern't only giving him an old look, it gave him wisdom.

Cassiel didn't need to be smothered in affection and told that everything in the world was going to be fine and dandy and nothing would ever go wrong again. Fact was, things were always going to go wrong and not everything was rainbows and sunshine. Life has its troubles but the most important thing he hoped to install into the filly was that if she needed anything; anything in the world....she'd have a family to come back to and she'd get just that. Anything to have a small glimmer of hope settle in her dark eyes.

Chuckling warmly, he smiled brightly in gratitude to his grandaughter. "It makes me so happy to hear that, Cassiel. I just hope you know that by saying that you're going to be stuck with me now. Its like a contract, If you like me and I like you then its all abiding it'll take you not liking me anymore to break it."

He moved slow; not painfully but with sluggish fluidity to give her a gentle nuzzle; adjusting a few stray locks of her hair into their rightful place.

"Rue huh? So he looks like you." It was easier for him to picture a small colt with similar patterns to Cassiel...but her next statement threw him a bit offguard. Better? Their father loved him more? Nonsense....a father's love as he knew was equal; even though minds and opinions could clash the love for each of his children remained strong and divided. "Well, i'm not sure what he's said to you....but children cannot be grouped and classified for who's better. Each child has their own distinct personality, and neither is better or worse than the next. Look at your aunts and uncles....Zevach's brash and brawly, Marius is calculating and suave, Your mother is sweet and relaxed, Aiolos is hyper and childish, and Cicely is thoughtful and kind. All of them are different, but I couldn't possibly chose one over another; they're all so different and thats exactly why I love them all."

Curling a bit tighter so the poor tired filly could have something sturdy to lay on, he was secretly a bit touched that she didn't mind this positionas he could only dare to hope that maybe - just maybe he was sneaking into her good books.

"Its how even now; I feel like my love for you is blooming like a spring flower. Because you're unique, and thats what I like best about you. Sweet little beautiful, wonderful perfect grandaughter. I'll let you in on a secret though...." He leant down, drawing his mouth down to her ear. "All those things I mean....because one day i'll be able to take you up to the mountians and you'll see the snow caps in sunset...with the red skies sinking down on the pure white snow and well....your pelt remind me exactly of that."

He chuckled, although minding to shoot a bit of a concerned glance to Zevach and Eponine before continuing; "Kinda puts my black and blue coat to shame in comparison to nature, doesn't it?"

Snorting a bit more angrily, he couldn't believe she was still trying to defend that idiot Ezriel. Or at least trying to convince him otherwise of going head to head against his now EX mentor. Narrowing his orbs down at Eponine as she threw herself on him; he let out a curt sigh....perhaps he should just give in...

No.

No he couldn't do that. Not after what he did....The family had suffered enough in its own clockwork than having some jackass throw a monkey wrench into one of the clogs - mainly Eponine. Not to mention by how Cassiel acted, he had something to do with it; or else why would she be so sad with such a great mom as Eponine would be!

"No Eppie, I can't do that. I'm not retarded....Do you remember the night I came home with puncture wounds and slashes as a foal....these scars??" The stallion flicked his head back to make his thin furlines noticeable where the wounds had been and scars now remain. "That was from him....I know what he's capable of. He may be a mutant and strong, but i'm not going to get myself killed by that poor excuse for a stallion. I've been training all my life....and what was it all for if I can't even do something to help protect my sister from a life with an idiot fling; he needs to own up.....or do you want to go through the rest of your life with a fatherless daughter and never knowing your son? I bet he hasn't even come to visit you.....probably off sulking about his problems with his damn father!"

The teal stallion hissed, drawing back from Eponine and looking her dead in the eyes in a serious mannor.

He wasn't going to back down.
