Hello, all!

It's a new year! Time for some changes! 4laugh

Firstly, the guild's name will be changing. I will take suggestions for a new name for the guild here in this thread. Why change the name, you ask? Well, I would like for the guild to center less on "Black pride," (whatever your definition of that might be), and instead be built around more open discussion. This doesn't mean we will not allow threads about Black culture, etc.; the guild will still proclaim "All kinds, all colors," but it won't be so concentrated on just Black Americans and Black American culture. To be truly open-minded we must accept all cultures; after all, we are all influenced by cultures other than our own. 3nodding

There will be other changes as well and I will post updates and answer any questions here.

Happy New Year, Everyone!

I understand your reasons for wanting to change the name of the guild, but I don't agree that you should change it. This is one of three guilds on Gaia where the description has anything to do with black people. And out of those three, this is the only guild that has a large number of members and is actually pretty active. I also think that Gaia needs a place where black issues and cultures can be discussed.

Personally, I joined this guild to find other black Gaians and hopefully find interesting discussions. I was also looking for a place where every other post wasn't completely ignorant, or about how much so-and-so hates blacks and other non-white races. You don't know how happy I was to see that there was a guild out there claiming to promote black pride. I was even happier to see that the posts in the guild backed up the claim.

One of the main reasons I even joined the guild was because of the name. I searched and searched, and at the time, nothing came up in the search with the words 'african' or 'american'. When I did a search for 'black', I found a bunch of guilds devoted to the color or about being a goth. I didn't want either of those, I wanted what 'Black Pride' was offering.

Although the name was 'Black Pride', we talked about anything and everything, even if it didn't relate to being black at all. The description said the topics were not just about being black, and that the group was open to all races. And there have been several members of the guild who have said they aren't of African descent at all.

I just think you should keep the name 'Black Pride Guild' for kids like me who are looking for people who have that similar link, and are looking for open and honest discussions where you won't be harassed for your stating race.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. It makes me feel as though the guild members DO actually care if the name changes. I will add that to the title of the thread, though, since maybe it isn't so important-looking as it is.

I understand that probably half, if not more, of the members we have now came to this guild or found it in the first place because the title said "Black Pride." But...this also means that many people joined simply because they are black... Not necessarily a terrible thing, but it makes for a long list of folks who are members here "just because."

I think it would force people to look beyond the "cover" (the home page) of the guild, if it was not simply labeled "Black Pride." There are more creative titles we can come up with, right?

Cool idea. I think I would go with something along those lines...

Mmmkay. I have re-thought my thinking, if that makes any sense.

As an experiment, I changed the title of the guild to "Discussion Guild" for 1 month (it'll be a month tomorrow). Can anyone guess what happened? Or rather, what didn't happen?? xD

No new members in a month. (On average, we used to get about two every two weeks.) This definitely shows that the title of a guild is paramount. Unfortunately people tend to join this guild especially based solely upon the title. "Hey, I'm black, I'll join!" Then, they never post or quickly become inactive. This is true for other guilds, too, I guess. *shrug*

I have decided that I still want to steer away from "Black pride," again, whatever that happens to mean, and go more in the direction of a discussion guild.

The "African and Black American Culture Guild" is a long name, but I am considering it. So far, it seems like only one other guild member besides myself really even cares (which is pretty lame, since we have 336 members), so I will probably just change the name to whatever suits my fancy.

If I do decide to change the name to the above-mentioned title, (which is very likely). I will shorten it (like BPG) to The ABC's or something cute like that. xDD I will try to get an animated banner made, or if someone would like to make one, feel free.

The name has been changed. Love it? Hate it? Let me know!

I like the name change, it's more inclusive of all people of African descent since some people think of "Black" as African americans. And yheah, we do need a refuge so we can talk about things without ED n00bs harassing us.

FYI: Almost as soon as I changed the title from "Discussion Guild" to its current title, we started getting join requests again. xD Just thought that was worth sharing. wink

The name change would be ok....you would have to expirement with different names to see what works for the guild. Does it cost money(gold) to change the name?

xD The name has already been changed. What's your opinion on the new title? Like it? Hate it? Got another name you'd like to suggest?

No, it does not cost gold to change the name.

Hmm...I put "American" by itself, separated by a comma to try to make it seem a little more inclusive. Sure, that means the discussion is mainly about Americans, as opposed to the Irish or the Japanese, but we mean to include discussion about all Americans, blacks and African-Americans especially.

Thanks for giving me your opinion.

i really like the name change. it's still geared toward people of african descent and it's also positive. even tho it's got 'african' in the title, i think open-minded people of other cultures would be interested in joining. good job! wink
