Try to get good at the other instruments as well.
Percussionists are supposed to be good at all their instruments. Alas, I'm good at everything BUT the drums...

Trust me. I hated and avoided the mallet instruments all four of my beginning percussion year, and now coming into my fifth, I have found that there one of the most important. Within my freshman year I had to learn all 12 of the major scales in a month and later I have to learn every scale possible. Then with Honor band and the All state auditions I wish I spent more time on the mallet interments. So, even if you don't like the mallet instruments become good at them. Again especially when you get to high school. Most of the drum line couldn't play mallet instruments, then tanked when they got into the band class because they had to learn how to play them.

Inconclusive decision Kirei_chan get your own pair of mallets. they come in handy. Their expensive but you will really need them. Mallets aren't that expensive. The instruments, yes. Maybe like, $10 bucks for some mallets? Not as bad as having the $2,000 vibraphone's tubes keep falling out (at the school...)...X_X

Oh, well, yeah. Yarn mallets or felt mallets always cost more 'cause they have to use more material.
