Okay, a few. So, you've come across some bad ones, right? Ones that just RAPE the characters, ones with such horrible grammar that you have to pause and wonder if it's actually English (I can almost feel Seira going, "GAWD YES," the grammar Nazi that she is... <3), ones with Mary Sues coming out the wing-wong...
WELL. There is a solution.
NO, NOT A HAMMER.
The solution is MiSTs.
MiST is short of Mystery Science Theatre 3000, which was a show which used to make fun of bad movies. Sort of like Video on Trial, for those Canadian fans. This is the same idea, except they do it for fanfics. Specifically, Avatar fanfics.
They are hilariously bad. Honestly. If you haven't read 'Rei: A New Kind of Princess'... you are missing out, my friend.

However, instead of just mocking the hell out of fics, they also have a collection of stories that DON'T suck. The link for that is

One in particular that I'd recommend is The Hunter and the Prey. It's Zutarian, but it is hands-down the best Zutarian fic I've ever read. Unless you're violently against Zutara, you'll enjoy this. I'm not much of a Zutarian, but I sincerely enjoyed this fic, more than 95% of the fics I read. The link for it is
