What traits must a companion have inorder to be likeable amongst the fans, audience and of cource the Doctor?
What makes good chemistry for the companion and the Doctor?

Well, I think she/he has to be clever, and they have to be able to handle themselves, ie, not getting captured or becoming a tremendous nuisince all the time. In fact, they should be able to save the Doctor once or twice. Its what I didn't like about some of the earlier companions- the ones that always had to be rescued. It gets tiresome.
It doesn't hurt if they have a little witty banter between them. It makes the show more fun. ^_^

@Triska- Lol. "The Girl in the Fireplace" is a great example of that.

Cool, but then again it also sounds like Martha who hardly anyone likes.

People only hate Martha because she's not Rose. Modern SciFi fans are strangely allergic to change. They're going to have to get used to the idea that change is at the very heart of Doctor Who.

I never had anything against Martha, save the fact that she developed a crush on the Doctor right away and it just would not dissapere.
But I respected her alot as the season wore on- she proved herself as brave, loyal and clever as any companion before her, even more so in some cases. And I can sympathize with her- this Doctor is adorable, and he did pretty much make out with her within the first few hours they met. It would be confusing for anyone I think.

Yeah, I'm getting tired of all the companions falling for the Doctor and going through the same motions of "I want to, but I know you can't, but I always will."
I think the Master as a companion would have been AWESOME.
But otherwise I wish he'd get another Romona, maybe not Romona herself, but another Time Lady who isn't at all interested in him.

What makes the perfect companion? Rose. Rose. Rose. need I say more? But then again, Martha. The only thing I have against her is that she isn't Rose. Beach scene. *sobs*

I didn't like Martha for most of series three because she was a stupid bint. She didn't get a personality besides "*Sigh* why doesn't the Doctor love me?" until Blink or so. That and the fact that we never really had any continuation of her character. Every episode was like her first. I blame that on the writers not really reading each other's scripts.

The thing I notice is that in America some TV shows like this, that are absolutely loved can last YEAAAARS with the same cast. But in Britain they quickly seem to switch Doctors with Baker staying the longest (was it seven years?). It seems like a cultural thing that characters keep coming and going that doesn't really happen in America (least not the shows I watch).
Then again that might not be true at all, Doctor Who's the only British show I've seen.

In fact, they added the whole regeneration thing because they didn't want one actor to have to give his life to the show, just for the continuation of the seires. (Which I'm really glad for.) But, the British shows I've watched, (just a few here-or-there, thanks to PBS) seem to be pretty consistent, same as in the US, exept with slightly different "humour" and accents. ^_^

If what you're annoyed with is the whole Companion falling for the Doctor then we are not likely to see that with Danna. I was glad to see that he's going to be traveling with her. With all the emotional trauma he's been through, he'd need someone that would just be a friend. And not hope for something more.
And don't forget that Chris was very good looking also.
* Be able to think for themselves. And not rely on the Doctor for all the ideas. * Do other reactions to creatures or other things different from screaming like a banshee. (That annoyed me)
