A very important trick to reading the Bible is finding a way to making it enjoyable. You can study and analyze it all you want, but first and foremost you must by all means enjoy reading it.
Some places are simply boring for American readers, such as long lists of names! But the real trick I've found is finding a version of the Bible that is easy for me to read, which I find my favorite is NASB (New American Standard Bible). I don't believe that any of the sound translations are better than any other as a whole, but I do believe that certain ones are better for certain people depending on how they find reading easier. If your having problems reading the Bible like I was not too long ago, than maybe try finding people with different versions and trying them out and see if that helps. For this I suggest I Corinthians, and I mean the whole book if you can manage it. It isn't that long but there are enough noticable differences in it to be able to tell which one you found easier to read.
The reason I bring this up is I was reading old threads and saw that some people mentioned occasionly that they had problems getting themselves to read their Bibles. This won't make it magically easier to read, but it may give you the extra push you need just like I did.

Yeah, it can be a bit difficult some times. My problem is mostly a lack of discipline. The NIV(New International Version) is one I like. A good place to start would be the new testament, probably John. Then going back to read Genesis and Exodus is a good idea too. It just a few books after those to that have a lot of laws and genealogy.

I started reading the bible when I was a young teen and I am still reading it. I am in Job in the old testament. I would also read parts of the new testament along with the old but now I plan to read acts to revelation and leave the gospels for last. I feel better breaking the readings up between the testaments. but I recall I skipped the book of numbers when I started reading so someday i will have to go back and check it out sweatdrop (its funny cuz I cant blame it on being young, I think I would still skip the book today)
my mom is reading the bible in one year. well it's taken me a decade and Im not even halfways through, but I dont believe in rushing. i dont want to miss anything or lose the message, and there are so many messages. sometimes I stick to a passage for weeks just pondering it.
