Alright, here's an odd question and hopefully someone has either heard of this or knows what the hell is going on.
My bf just told me his grandmother was diagnosed with an AIDS-like virus, but is genetic. It attacks varying parts of the body, but isn't the "symptom" in AIDS. I can try to find out what exactly it's called, but I don't want him to know why I'm so worried because I know he's going through a tough time and I don't want him to think I'm more worried about me than what he's going through. But does anyone know what this is?? Or if it can be transmitted sexually, etc. like AIDS??
He'll probably get tested for it later...but should I worry?

Well you said the word "Genetic" and "Virus", its probally one of the two. If its genetic I wouldnt say you have anything to worrry about at all, but it may affect your children, if its an actual virus, there is a chance it could be passed to you, or anyone else, including your children if it were to be given to you. I guess youll just have to talk to a doctor.

If you feel worried, perhaps you should switch to using condoms (if you aren't already). But if it's genetic and not listed as an STD then it shouldn't affect you.
Also, it's not AIDs that is the STD, it's HIV that spreads and later causes AIDs, so you shouldn't have to worry I don't think.

But he didn't say what. He didn't know what it was. Webmd, there's a good idea. I guess I'll go there as soon as I can find out what this is called.

Thanks! I knew you'd come through...I just can't tell what this is because it is genetic. Hopefully he'll know the name of it so I can do some research.

My boyfriend says it might be lupus, because it's an immunodeficiency disorder, and he thinks it might be genetic, but he's not sure. He says it's where the body's own immune system starts attacking its own cells. It's like organ rejection, he says.

I guess I freaked when he said AIDS, because the last thing I want is to get AIDS from him. But if it's genetic, it shouldn't affect me. Just if (ha, as if) we ever have kids. Right?

Well, it's his grandmother and currently her liver is failing...it's attacking her immune system. And she gets cold a lot. Like always.

I don't blame you for freaking out. When will he have the test results back? Though yes, if it's a genetic thing in HIS family, then I don't think there's any way you could get it. However, if you two ever had kids, then that might be a different story. Again, he could talk to his doctor about that though. heart

I know his grandma has been diagnosed with whatever it is, though he probably won't get tested till later. I just don't know how to bring it up to him. I mean, I shouldn't freak out like that, since I probably would already have it if it is AIDS and is passed through sexual stuff. Sigh.
