Both have thier advantages and disadvantages. I cant say eithier is better but if your a bass player it's good to know both.

It's much easier to learn bass, but much harder to learn how to play it well. I argue that since electric is a happy medium between the two ideas, that it's the better one to play. Then again, the only thing I really play now is the acoustic, and trying to call that the best one is going to get me laughed out of this guild. smile

I like acoustic bass more than guitar in Jazz. It has to be acoustic though. Otherwise, I'm rather indiferent.

Within the jazz idiom, I generally prefer acoustic over electric. The upright has more of a transparent sound, compared to the electric bass.

Saurencaerthai Within the jazz idiom, I generally prefer acoustic over electric. The upright has more of a transparent sound, compared to the electric bass. Yes but if your playing a fusion song or jazz-funk tune wouldnt electric be more appropriate? Usually in the bands i play in the bassist has both and switches back and forth for whatever song is more suiting of the chart.

You could, but it's not cannon that one has to pick up an electric when that type of song rolls around. I have heard bassists play some nasty funk on uprights.

I think the ability to play both upright and electric bass is awesome...almost necessary to get a job in today's society. However, I think you can do a lot more sound-wise with an electric bass. If you know what you're doing you can make it sound like everything from an upright to edgy and slappy.

Definetly should be able to play both, depending on the song, as MH said. And you know what? It really all depends on the player wink

I'm not a big fan of electric guitar in jazz very much. I have heard some good jazz guitar, but I prefer bass. Especially in funky jazz songs.

Being a guitar player I'm a bit biased on this issue, but I'd hafta go with guitar. Theres alot of aspects to jazz guitar such unaccompanied stuff and chord melody stuff where a bass just dosn't normally go.

they are both good. generally for jazz i like upright bass because it has a nice sound and is has that traditional jazz sound to it that appeals to me, but electric is good too. it really depends on the genre (sub-genre) and the song in paticular.
