Kal truly hated winter. The poor little stallion's winter coat wasn't very thick, and although it was enough to keep him alive it wasn't enough to let him feel very warm. Every morning he woke up stiff and cold, and because he was so dependent on the two legger fires as a source of light he simply couldn't find a warmer place to spend his nights.

Thankfully it was a sunny morning, the small alicorn thought to himself as he wandered to the nearby stream, leaving deep furrows in the snow behind him even though he picked up his feet as much as possible. The sun warmed his body slightly as he trudged to the stream's edge and tapped the layer of ice along the edge with one hoof to break it. He had no idea why the water had to go all solid like that, but he didn't like it one bit.

She rather liked the cold. She'd learned how to tuck herself up under her wings and to wait out a snowfall early on in life. If you were buried under the snow it was actually warmer than being out where the wind could get at you.

Yawning a bit she stretched her wings out and cracked though the bit of snow that had covered her over night. Getting carefully to her feet she made note to remember that she'd gone to sleep somewhere close to a stream and that it would be very bad to step in it. Twisted ankles hurt.

Shaking herself off she stretched her wings out fully and tried to get the bit of chill out of her bones.

Kal jerked his head up from his drink when a movement in the corner of his eye caught his attention. Not that far from where he stood the snow had moved. By the time the mare had finished shaking the snow off herself Kal had realized it was indeed just a mare, even if it looked as though she had materialized from the snow itself.

He quickly dropped his head for another drink, it would be nothing but trouble if the mare noticed he had been staring for a second.

Once she'd gotten the snow out of her wings she tucked them carefully at her sides and made she she was standing on solid ground. Kicking a bit of the snow away from her so she could move she looked up and across the stream.

"Oh ... hello." She smiled at the stallion who she had probably startled when she'd stood up. At least he hadn't bolted and left her wondering what made the tracks in the snow.

How could she just hide under the snow like that? If she was completely hidden someone could have accidentally stepped on her as they waded around in the snow, it was often impossible to tell what sorts of things lay under it... And how on earth had she been sleeping in the middle of all that cold stuff? Surely she would freeze overnight like-

Kal jerked his head up for a second time the moment he realized she had actually spoken to him. "H-hello!" he replied a little too quickly. It had been a quiet winter, he was almost odd to hear another voice.

"I didn't scare you did i?" She wiggled her feet completely free of the snow and picked her way carefully down toward the edge of the stream. She poked at it with a hoof until she'd made a hole and could take a sip. It was colder than she'd expected and had a bit more bite than she would have liked.

"Usually no one comes out this way. I wasn't expecting company"

Kal shook his head quickly. "N-no, I was just s-startled. I-I come to the stream a lot, n-not here, a little ways upstream, but the ground is all iced up over there a-and here is a bit safer..." The little stallion realized he was babbling and quickly shut up. The cold silence of the winter season must have really been taking a toll on him to make him so jumpy. First staring and then babbling, poor Kal couldn't help but look away with embarrassment.

She tilted her head a bit and laughed softly. "You'd think with wings it would be easier to stand on ice for you." She found it far easier since she could use them as extra balance. "I find it's usually easier to drink here since the ground slopes down into the stream slower."

"I-I could use my wings for balance," he started hesitantly, shifting his hooves in a nervous manner and slowly flattening the snow in a small circle under himself. "B-but I-I'd get really cold." He had kept his wings tucked against his back to keep in a bit more warmth, and wasn't about to lose that warmth when he could just as easily drink somewhere else.

"It's not that cold." She stretched out a wing for a moment before tucking it back against her. "The air feels good some times. If you can find patches of sun durring the day it's easy to soak up the warmth." It didn't stay that long after the sun went down but it was a good way to stay warm to her.

Kal fluffed his feathers a bit, but otherwise refused to move his wings. "I-it feels too cold to me, e-even in the sun." He didn't have as many dark patches as she did, and he could stand a sunny meadow all day and still feel cold. The little stallion's nervousness was tinged with a bit of embarrassment, it was so uncomfortable admitting to one's weaknesses on a first meeting, particularly when it happened to be a pretty mare he was meeting.

"Too each their own i suppose." She had always enjoyed the winter months. The colors were beautiful and even though it was cold and harder to find food it always seemed so calm. So much less hustle and bustle than the summer.

Kal thought that was a good philosophy, especially for someone who slept out in the middle of the snow. He could accept that, since he had seen it for himself, kinda, but he still didn't understand it. He would have preferred a nice, warm, sheltered place to sleep, with no snow, which was probably why acceptance of her odd behavior didn't lessen any of his curiosity.

After a second of nervous fidgeting he spoke up. "How can you sleep in the snow without freezing at night?"

She tilted her head slightly. "You don't know?" She though everyone knew that it was warmer down there. "It's warmer under the top layer. If you make a little tunnel then your body heat collects in there and makes it cozy." It was still on the cold side but she much preferred it to any other methods she'd tried. "It is a good way to keep warm when the snow is falling. Just wiggle yourself a ditch and them let the snow fall on you"

Kal blinked. It was almost like she had just told him the trees could uproot themselves and fly, it seemed so backwards to use the snow to stay warm. "You mean... it doesn't melt the snow and make you all wet and cold? I-I usually try to avoid the snow, I-I've never tried laying down in it before."

He swished his tail a bit, still unbelieving. He hadn't felt truly warm since the last days of fall, and had given up on finding any comfort before spring hit. "D-do you sleep out in the snow all the time?"
