Four is all you need
four is all the greatest need
*cough* Jaco, Wooten... Bootsy *cough*
first off your comment is wrong. Yes some of the greatest bass players used only four strings. But correct me if I am wrong ( im not) Jaco used a 4-string Fretless not a normal 4 string, Victor Wooten uses a 5 string and a 5-string Fretless and a Tenor bass, which is a 4-string bass tuned ADGC so he has the high C of the six string.
I put 5, but I own a 4-string Tobias, 4-string Fretless SX, 5-string stage, and a six-string Douglas.
Each has its own purpose.
Steve Baily-Six string Fretless
John Myung- six String bass
Les Claypool-six string fretless
All our great artists.
Oh yeah? Your comment is wrong. 4 is all you need. More strings =/= greater skill.
Yes all you need is 4 strings, but it doesn't mean you can't play a 5 string, a six string, an 8 string(4-string with an extra octave) 11 string, 12 string(4-string with an extra 2 octaves), hell I have seen a nineteen string bass.
4-strings do not make you great, 5+ strings also do not make you great.
Oh and btw I am correct about the Wooten playing a 5-string, and his tenor tunings, I can get pics and a video if you really want proof.
And if you read carefully, I never said more strings equal greater skill, What I said is that there have been great artist that happen to use 5+ instrument instead of the standard four. Jaco Pastorius is the greatest bass player of all time and no one will sound like him ever again in my opinion. But because he used a four string doesn't mean we all have to though.
I am actually enjoying this thread since I actually respect all the people here, just trying to get my point across that there are great bass players that use more strings. Ever heard of a band called Nuclear Rabbit? The bassist, Jean Baudin, Uses an 11-string bass! Does this make him better for more strings? nope, but He has more skill than me and a lot of us here ( in general terms, for I dunno how good you guys are, and each person has their own opinion, not trying to start an argument about that :p ).
In other words: the insturment the artist uses is just the tool to express his music. don't dis the 5+ range bassists when theyhave just as much skill, if not better.
Oteil Burbridge? six string bass.

All used 5+ strings on strings. Does that make them better than teh 4-strings players? nope, skill alone does that for some off them ( I admit, dunno some of them, Wiki'ed extended range bass) and some of them suck, all a matter of opinion.
