Jason
Bio: Jason never asked for magical abilities; indeed his family had never shown promise with such things. For generations, the only kind of egg to come about from his family was those of phoenix’s, and as such, his family was known as one of the greatest blacksmithing families in Vaeles’Aran. Jason was expected to continue on with the family tradition; there was no reason he wouldn’t. However, such a thing never concerned Jason; he was content with being nothing more than the son of a blacksmith. He needed to great title, no great name or legacy to live. Perhaps that is why things turned out differently.
The time came for Jason to receive his egg, and he accepted it with no real thoughts. After all, he planned on it being the same as the rest of his family. He spent nearly every moment caring for the egg, making sure it was safe. After all, the creature inside this egg would be his companion for life, and in its most vulnerable time, it was his duty and honor to protect it. However, for the most part, the two years over which he watched over the egg were uneventful. Life continued as per the norm, and Jason continued on with his life.
Then his sixteenth birthday came around, and everything changed. You see, at least in Vaeles’Aran, when an egg is to hatch, the child an family must go to the cathedral in the center of the city, and the event is watched over by the high priest and the current ruler of the city. It was no different when Jason’s turn rolled around. He stood in the cathedral, watching the egg anxiously; not because he was impatient for it to hatch, but because it kept rolling around, nearly falling more than once. Then, it did fall, as the egg gave a great leap, the shell breaking. Jason dived and caught the half of the egg that remained, a feathered creature inside. At first, he wasn’t surprised. However, as the creature moved, he quickly realized something; it wasn’t a phoenix. It was something completely different: a griffin.
Needless to say, he was shocked, and so was his family. No mage had ever come out of the Voldross family. Now a “Royal Mage” had appeared for no apparent reason. Jason half expected his family to be angry, or at least disappointed. Instead, his mother and father were happy for him. He had moved up a step on the social ladder, gone to a place where no one else in his family had ever gone to. While he didn’t see it that way, he was grateful that they weren’t disappointed with him. He had been granted his companion, and now things began.
The first thing that had to be done was to test Jason’s “adeptness” with magic. To his great surprise, he was very talented with it. Spells that took some new mages hours or days to comprehend and use, he did so in minutes, and found ways of using them to greater effect. It quickly became apparent that Jason was gifted in the ways of magic. He could read the ancient scripts of spells, and given an hour, unravel it and piece it back together so that it made sense, not only to him but to anyone who would sit down and listen to him explain it. Seal magic and Rune magic proved to be interesting hobbies for him; it was like a puzzle to him, and he liked puzzles.
Sciara was always there with him as well. She hadn’t originally told him her name, much to his annoyance. She made him figure it out by picking out specific runes in spells and piecing them together, though she didn’t give him the exact order. That was the one “puzzle” that took him the longest. He continued with his magical training, delving deeper into tomes than other students. He had no idea what he was actually getting himself into.
You see, in Vaeles’Aran, a magi who excels in the way Jason did was secretly picked to be the next Arch-Magi; a position that had been vacant for the past 100 years of so. Jason himself didn’t realize how far ahead he was getting of the others. In one year he had reached a level of magical aptitude that placed him with the teachers who taught the new Magi. Another year, and he had surpassed those. He was sitting in the magical library one day when a mage came to him with a message. It told him that he was being summoned by the High Magi Counsel.
The High Magi Counsel was an assembly of the wisest and strongest mages in the country, gathered together to guide others on the path of mastering their magic. If you were summoned there, you either had done something of tremendous importance, or had violated a sacred rule. Since Jason could not think of anything tremendous he had done in the recent past, he wondered if he had done something wrong. Maybe he had delved too deep into one of those tomes. Sciara could only laugh at his unease, he way of hiding her own.
Needless to say, when he appeared in the court of the High Magic Counsel, he was shocked to find out why he had been summoned; to be appointed to the position of Arch-Magi! He thought it was a joke at first, and so did Sciara. Sure, he was slightly ahead of his peers, but he was no Arch-Magi. The counsel had a simple way of showing him how wrong he was; one of them duel Jason. When the mage, a woman, suggested this, Jason was even more surprised. He would get slaughtered, there was no way he could battle against a mage of her caliber.
However, when the duel began, Jason was surprised to find that he could understand the motions she was making, the words she was speaking; the spell she was forming unraveled itself in his mind and he instantly knew a spell to counter it. It was like that with every spell she cast. When he decided to try going on the offensive, he learned that he was not the only one who could do such a thing. However, when he tried, actually put effort into trying to win the duel that is, he found that she couldn’t keep up, and the result was him coming out the victor. He was stunned. How had he, the son of a long line of blacksmiths, gotten so powerful? How could he be the Arch-Magi? It didn’t make sense, but it was true.
At the age of eighteen, he was the youngest Arch-Magi in recorded history; the second oldest being thirty-four. Being Arch-Magi was a major deal; he was in a position of power, and had political sway the likes of which his poor family had never seen. His family was as shocked as he was, thought they were also more pleased than he was. He found there were perks to such a position: his family didn’t have to go without anymore. However, the pressures of the job could, and would, take their toll.
Three years he remained, an great unease welling up inside him. Was he doing things right? Was he doing them for the right reasons? He found that he had a way with words, that he could be diplomatic when he had to be, and somehow intimidating at others. That only came into play when someone tried to threaten the city, however. During this time, he also found something interesting the quarters of the former Arch-Magi; a puzzle. It was complicated; a series of spells that lead to clue, a series of clues that lead to spells, to specific runes and to long lost symbols. It took Jason a very long time to decipher it, and when he did, he was amazed at what he found; Sanctus-Librum and Khaos-Librum, two tome that were long thought to have been lost or destroyed. The spells inside were numerous.
Each book had more spells than he could count, and he could not decipher all of them. He hid the tomes away on his own; he was beginning to become suspicious of one of those on the High Magi Counsel; the only one who had spoken against the appointment. Apparently, the mage had his own agendas to becoming Arch-Magi, and magical artifacts of this caliber put into the wrong hands would cause havoc for the city, not to mention himself. So the years went on, and either each passing day Jason grew more ill at ease.
Something had to break; Jason was doubting himself and his decisions, the idea of a conspiracy was seeming more and more likely as he used scrying spells to determine what people were doing, and unease was setting into the city after several decisions Jason had made had turned out to not be the best choice. Something had to break, and it was Jason. He knew he couldn’t take it anymore, so he decided to leave. Sciara scolded him, called him an idiot, and above all tried to dissuade him from this course of action, but it wouldn’t work, and she would not leave his side. So he returned to his chambers, collecting a few articles that he wished to take with him.
However, his idea was discovered by a spy; a telepathic that was stationed to pick up on his thoughts. The telepathic rushed to inform the High Magi Counsel, which moved quickly to stop Jason. After all, Jason was to powerful a mage to let out of there sight, to powerful a person to be left where he could be turned against them. They were doing nothing wrong, keep in mind, but simply valued their positions of power. Jason picked up his things, including the two tomes that he had kept secret, and attempted to leave. He ran into members of the counsel then. When persuasion wouldn’t work, Jason turned to pleading. And when that course of action failed, he turned to intimidation. That worked: they did not want to tango with the Arch-Magi who had proven himself a capable combatant. However, they couldn’t let him go so easily, and they knew that he was against violence.
However, they couldn’t stop him. He had made up his mind, and nothing on earth would stop him. He used several spells to incapacitate those that attempted to stop him, and fled the city and country, seeking refuge in forest and small villages. Luckily, Sciara had learned of a way to change he form, so that she seemed as though she was human. Of course, it was strange to see a human without their companion, but excuses are easily fabricated, and potential problems were evaded. All the while, Jason had kept his identity of who he is a secret, ducking the spies and trackers that the High Magi Counsel has sent for him.
Job: Former Arch-Magi of Vaeles‘Aran
Weapons: Jason carries no true weapons with him, in the literal sense. However, he does carry with him 2 large, thick tomes. One is a black covered book, while the other is a white covered book. Descriptions below.
Sanctus LibrumA collection of spells focusing on protection and holy energy. These spells are usually used to either form barriers, heal injuries and remove disease and curses, or to deliver powerful holy attacks against demons and such.
Khaos LibrumA collection of spells focusing on dark energy and elemental energy control. These spells are usually used for offensive attacks, by bending the powers or the elements and destructive energy to fuel the spells. These spells are usually more draining, and several are considered “forbidden” because of their nature.
