Hello,

I have recently become interested in beadwork. I am quite good at making complex jewelry.

But, I have a question: How to use beadwork to make something Lolita?
I know that pearls and charms are always good (like Angelic Pretty: example), but I was wondering if any of you had more ideas for beaded Lolita jewelry and accessories? And if any beads besides pearls could work?

Thanks for reading.

EDIT 01/14/08:

Alright, I finished the necklace (only it's missing part of a clasp still).
I apologize for any cat hair that may be seen on the fabric I was using to photograph. ^.^;

I used regular black glass bugle beads for most of it. Some black glass seed beads.
And the purple beads are the oh-so-expensive swarovski crystals purchased at a specialty bead shop downtown. (though some craft stores carry them too) They're really quite beautiful when they catch the light.

Detail photo. - I used about four threads to make that pattern, though it can be done with three.
My little sister modeled it for me. - You can see her hands holding it on because I still need to find a second half for the clasp... Unfortunately it's not laying properly flat in this photo.

Anyway does this look like it could be used for lolita at all? I know I've seen classic lolitas wearing similar jewelry.
...What do you think?

it probably depends on what style you're going for
I think the most 'lolitaish' beads are like crystals and pearls

and you can make also those little jeweled belt-type things that hang over skirts instead of just jewelry!

That's a good idea!

Also there are dresses with beads right on them..

How about a barrette?
Here is something cute I found while browsing websites:

It's not really as noticable as the beads on dresses on skirts though, but it's an idea. ^ ^

Oh the barrette is lovely!
And I have some plain hair clips I can use too... Maybe I will try that.

I am making a necklace that is actually looking quite lolita-esque.
It is a (very) late christmas present for a friend, but I'll take photos before I give it to her so that I can show everyone here.
It should be finished later today or tomorrow...

I'd love to see it, when you're finished. I think lolita beadwork is a great idea, and I'm glad that you're experimenting with it.

VM has some hair corsages with beading on them. They're simple comopared to what you're probably interested in, but still very pretty.

I like the design of your necklace, and think that if you're using small beads such as bugle beads, adding a several more strands would be really cute. I guess I just think of Lolita jewelery as being pretty obtrusive, like the large pearl beads with giant crowns hanging from them, or multistranded chokers, like some victorian women wore. If you'd like historical inspiration, go looking through old photos. There's a ton of gaudy, but beautiful jewelery that has enough presence to not be overpowered by the ornateness of lolita outfits.

Yes I think I will try some larger beads next time. I see your point of how the necklace would sort of disappear when worn with a lolita outfit.

I saw some lovely silver charms at a bead store once... They were key shaped. ^.^
