The day had been sunny. A lot sunnier than it had the past few weeks.
Winter had brought darker, cloudier skies. That more often than not blocked out the warm sunlight. Letting cold, northern winds run rampant.
But the sunlight of today had drawn out the dark mare into the open. Most of winter she had spent lingering in her small grove. Where the brunt of the snow and cold had been cut in half by the closely growing trees. A nice little haven from the elements.
She stood there. Still and silent as she watched the sun roam across the sky and head towards its bed in the west. The clouds changing marvelous colors as dark red eyes watched them intently.
It had truly been a peaceful day.

Dafina had spent winter with her mother. Still too nervous to be out on her own at the time. She took comfort in the older mare's presence. They had spent a lot of time together and grown close. Closer than one might expect from just a mother or daughter.
They had become great friends.
The young mare had learned a lot about her mother in the weeks she spent in her company. Quite possibly more than her own father knew. But it was a great feeling, being with her mother. She had thought perhaps Firefly would of been over bearing. But that was just the opposite. As long as Dafina stayed safe, Firefly was content.
She had joined her mother not too long ago to gaze out at the multi-colored sky. Her medium length tail swaying back and forth in content. But she couldn't help wonder where the rest of her siblings and her father were.

It had been so long since he had left his homeland. Searching. Searching for his daughter so long. The large stallion felt bad for leaving his herd unprotected. But his son was still there. Hopefully he would be able to protect them in his stead.
His mate had sent him away. To find her. Their dark princess who had long ago fled from the herd. She had always been a wild spirit, but Dragonfly would never had imagined his daughter would of just up and left.
Making his way through the forests of this foreign land. Fate would certainly smile upon him today.
Breaking through the tree line, he was surprised to find two mares standing directly in front of him. Bright red eyes growing large in even more surprise when he looked at the darker of the two.
The marks. He had found her! Clearing his throat, he stood there. Chest puffed out as he snapped his braided tail back and forth. "Firefly. What luck I'm having today."

Firefly's eyes snapped widely open as the gruff voice came out of no where. Her first instinct was to move in front of Dafina. To keep her from harm.
But as soon as she caught sight of the stallion, her eyes nearly popped out of her head. Her knees began to shake as her ears flicked back against her delicate skull. "F-f....Father?" The mares jaw would have surely dropped to the ground if she did not have any self control.
"W-what are you doing here?" Firefly's heart pounded in her ears. She had thought she'd left them all behind. But now...now her father was standing in front of her once again. The same disapproving look upon his face as the day she spoke to him of leaving the herd. This was no dream.
It was real.

The young mare at first thought the voice was that of her father. But no. After a moments thought it was not the same. As if her mother moving in front of her was no sign of that either.
Her own dark red eyes turned to the pitch black stallion. He blended in with the darkness so well. Surely in the night he was an ultimate hunter or hider with that black coat. His bright red eyes sparkled like rubies. But the one thing that drew her attention was the marking on his face. So similar to her mothers and somewhat like her own. Merely a difference in color.
When her mother spoke, a shocked look washed over her face as her ears perked forward. Father? Was this...her...mother's father? Her grand sire?
Oh how she had longed to know about her parent's past. And now her own mother's was staring her in the face like a bright fire that blazed so bright you had to squint your eyes.
But it did not seem that her mother was even happy to see him. Why was that?

Dragonfly's eyes narrowed slightly at his daughters stammering. Surly is was a surprise to see that he had found her after all this time. But he'd figure she'd be more excited for his rescue of her from this lonely little existence she had brought upon herself by leaving the herd.
He pawed at the ground lightly. A puff of visible hot breath streaming from his nostrils. Eyes landing on the smaller mare. She seemed pretty young. "And who is this that you have along with you? A friend? How sweet my darling daughter. That you tried to fill your life with yet another herd. Though I must say it is quite small compared to your REAL herd. But luckily I have come to rectify that."
Or so HE himself believed.

The dark mare gave a snort of her own. Ears flicking this way and that as she gave a small lash of her tail.
It seems he hadn't changed since the last time they had met.
Her eyes narrowed once again before she turned her head to the side. Giving him a coy look as she puffed out her chest. "This is my daughter, Dafina. One of three children I have bared."
Firefly's own hooves pawed at the ground nervously. Even if her body language showed otherwise. How would he handle this fact? That she had started a family of her own, on her accord instead of by what he wanted. Would he lash out? Would he be calm? If she knew her father well, she knew exactly how he would react.
"Real herd? That thing you call a herd is YOUR herd. Not mine. I have my own life to live how I want it. Not by how you dictate things, father." She moved back to stand next to Dafina now, needing a bit of emotional support for just a moment. She was still overwhelmed by this sudden surprise. "My family is my REAL herd."

Dafina's ears dropped back against her head as her mother moved back. It was true. This utterly dark stallion was her mother's father. Her grand sire after all.
But...
There seemed to be more than just tension in the air. Rectify it? What did he mean by that? Was he here to kill her mother? What kind of herd did he (and now apparently her mother) come from? If he was here to kill her for leaving whatever herd this was, what kind of Soquili were they like to have these kinds of rules?
Her legs trembled lightly. What was she to do? He was much larger than she was. And those blood red eyes cut right through her.
Where was her father or brothers when she needed them?

His head nearly reelled back in shock, horror and disbelief. Eyes wide with a mix of surprise and rage.
When he got a bit more control over himself, the stallion took a better look at the young mare. Eyes narrowing as he examined her coat colors and markings. There, on her face. Similar markings as his own only black. What his daughter said was true. Only those specifically chosen from their family would inherit those markings. Not every member inherited them though or all of them even.
Firefly was the exception though. She had been chosen by both family lines to bare the double markings of both houses. The eye markings from Dragonfly's own line and the red eye of her mother's.
But this mare had the facial markings. Dafina, his grand foal, was a chosen.
"Daughter?" He questioned with a scrutinizing glare. "You let some strange stallion spoil you and you bore his foals?!" The stallion gritted his teeth. But then both eyebrows lifted as an idea sprang into his thoughts. The young mare had the markings. She would come to.
What about the other two? She had mentioned three. If they had the markings as well....
"Fine. You may bring her back with you." His head now lifted high as he looked down upon them.

If her jaw hadn't dropped now it should've. She couldn't believe what she was hearing from him. Well, Firefly supposed she could of. Her father was the same, irrational stallion he'd been so long ago. He would never change from his ways.
He was asking her...no. Telling her she just had to uproot and take her only daughter back with her to the herd. Her old herd. The one she had longed to leave so long ago, did, and had been on the run from for so long.
She didn't want to go back. She couldn't go back.
Stomping a hoof into the snow, her eyes a blaze as she stared him down. "No. You can't ask me to just up and leave the rest of my family. Besides, I would never want Dafina to have to suffer the way I did when I was younger." She moved forward a bit more, shielding her daughter once more.
Firefly would never let anyone take her children from her. OR her from her children.

What? Her? Go back to where?
She stared in almost absolute horror at her grand sire. Dafina just could not believe what he was saying. Dafina hadn't even been past the farthest mountains and he wanted her to go to some strange herd that she had no clue where they lived?
No way!
The young mare's ears stayed pinned to her head as she shrunk behind her mother. Feeling much more comfortable behind the stronger mare out of the stallions direct gaze.
Then it dawned on her. She didn't even know his name. Her mother had never talked about her past that much. Looking up at her, a twinge of fear in her eyes. Dafina's lip quivered. "Mama?"

Furrowing his brow, a deep creased formed across his forehead. The stallion was older, but he still seemed so young that it would of been hard to tell how old he really was.
"You know she has the markings! If you won't come back then I will take her instead." He moved forward quickly, bumping Firefly aside like a rag doll. Stopping in front of Dafina, he looked down at her. A softness had taken hold of his eyes. "Don't you want to come with your dear grand sire child? I assure you, you won't have to worry about anything for the rest of your life."
His tail lashed behind him. If both of them wouldn't come, then he would take Dafina and teach her the ways of his herd. Turn her into the perfect member. A pride to his family line. If his daughter would not be that, then his grand daughter would.

The quick knock by her sire sent Firefly to the ground. As a foal, she always felt as though he were a giant. Even now. When she was all grown up, he was still a giant. And she still a foal he could knock around.
Air rushed out of her lungs as she hit the ground hard on her side. The wind being knocked nearly completely out of her. Her long mane and tail splayed out around her.
"Leave her alone!" She panted while trying to get up. Her heart pounded quickly and heavily in her ears and chest. She had to get up! If she didn't, Dafina would be lost to her for sure.
How would she explain that to Sibalto?

Dafina's eyes widened to their widest as she watched her mother get tossed aside. "Mama!" She cried out, taking steps forward to get to her.
But before she could even move a foot, her grand sire had stepped in front of her. Her ears flicked back as she stared up into the bright reds eyes of the shadowy beast in her way. "I-I..." Her voice shook as she fumbled for the words.
Her gaze shot from her mother to him. Back and forth for several seconds before they locked his his again. She could feel his presence all around. His personality was massive and over powering.

Lifting a back hoof, he swiftly kicked Firefly in the side as she struggled to get back up. Knocking her down once more.
His attention quickly turned back to Dafina, a wry smile on his dark maw. Dragonfly let his head roll to the side as he glanced down at his daughter, laying on the ground. Helpless. "Do not worry my dear daughter. I will take good care of my grand daughter and teach her the ways of my herd. As for you well...I'm sorry to say but it seems since you won't co-operate that I have no choice but to leave you here."
The stallion's head turned back to the young mare. Reaching out, he nipped harshly at her sides to get her to move. Pushing her farther and farther away from the hillside. Head nudges and deep nickering soon came as he continued to force her away.
How unfortunate for his daughter. And yet--how fortunate for his own herd. Firefly was a lost cause. But Dafina would make up for it. Even if she only had the one marking, it would due.
Soon, he had driven her far enough that they were out of sight. Pushing her away to his homeland. Where the herd awaited his return. Except he would be bringing them someone else besides Firefly who he had intended to bring.
