(( Aaaand I'M UBER SLOW! 8D gonk Sorry for making you waaait! ))

Eyes fixated on his destination ahead, Calhoun diverted his mind from the eyes on the streets he knew were following him. Although living in a city as opposed to the forest was different enough in itself than he was used to, the swarms of humans around the area were more unnerving. He knew that they were getting used to seeing the hybrids in the area, with the Sanctuary situated within such range of the cities, but with the constant flow of tourists and newcomers coming through the area the recognition of their kind came slowly. After all, with a past as 'prestigious' as their own, it was no wonder; the higher-ups had always been trying to erase any sign the hybrids ever existed.

Although, come to think of it, they might also have been staring at the stag-hybrid's partially-hidden rifle under his long coat...

In any regard, Calhoun was not very bitter for the situation-at-hand, and managed to just shrug it off. After all, it wouldn't do if he came back here in a foul mood. He rarely came in during the main part of the day, so it would be a nice change from the norm.

It was surprisingly empty as Cal entered the building. He ran a hand through his dark brown hair, glancing around the room as he pondered what happened, only to realize it was a weekday. Hmm... maybe I should consider getting a job, he mused with a slight smile as he walked further in.

He stood in the center of the room, as if unsure of if he was allowed to do anything. The Sanctuary had been a bit like an orphanage or rehabilitation house for the majority of the hybrids, but now that he was back... he felt a little like a stranger. He was even nervous to take a seat, even though he knew very well that he was welcome to. Leaning over a little ways without moving his feet from their stead, he tried to peek down the hall to see if he could steal a glimpse of anyone, only to be disappointed; he couldn't see past the wall from where he was at. "Well, this is no good..." he mumbled to himself, mulling over what he should do next, or if he could find the nerve to sit down.

Nicea's tail was all fluffed up as he hurriedly went to the sanctuary. He'd long forgotten the stares and the onlookers. Ears flat against his head he held on tight to his coat. Squirrels were NOT made for winter no matter what anyone else said.

If it were up to him he'd stay home all day and sleep in the winter... Maybe he should have been a bear. Then he'd have a reason to hibernate. Clingint to himself in an attempt to warm himself he smiled at the sight of the sactuary. He was moving so quickly, with a mind to get warm, he almost stumbled upon the stag standing there as he entered the door.

Seeing there was someone standing in the doorway, Nicea tried to stop. He was a bit tangled up as he was trying to pull off his coat andtrying to close the door to keep the cold outside. "Oh no! Oh no!!~" It was to a failed attempt as the squirrel stumbled a bit, then fell onto Calhoun.

The day was quite cloudy, trying to block off the sun behind the greyish-white masses that were the clouds as they succeeded in keeping the atmosphere on the earth cold and relatively unpleasant. However, despite these circumstances, a bit of light managed to peek through the darkened daytime, as Calhoun realized when a shadow from outside the window crept larger along the opposite wall when another person approached the Sanctuary. The stag turned to greet the other hybrid as he heard the door swing open, but he wasn't aware at how swift a speed he was traveling.

"Ah--" was all he managed to blurt out before the squirrel rammed into him, catching him by surprise. He caught the squirrel with one arm, preventing him from falling any further, but nearly forgot his other hand was holding his rifle. Reaching up with the hand, he caught the firearm before it fell to the floor, but lost his balance temporarily upon doing so. His side slammed into the butt of the rifle as the barrel hit the floor, and for a second or two his breath was caught in his chest from the shock and pain of it. Thank God for the safety lock... he thought with a grimace, taking a step back to regain his balance.

He managed a smile, knowing it was just an accident. "Careful there, buddy! What's got you in such a rush?" he managed to say, though his shortness of breath was still noticeably there. He didn't seem to realize that he was being a little nosy, but he had a tendency to do just that when he was trying to hide pain.

Nicea's ears went back as he tried to gather his wits about himself mildly confused on why they hadn't hit the floor. Ears perking at the sound of the others voice he looked up and blinked a moment. Making a small noise he heard to get himself back on his own feet again.

"Im so sorry~!" He gave a small bow of humiliation, embarrassed to no end that he had fell on the other. Realizing he was still a bit tangled in his coat he finally got it off. Looking at Calhoun he hinted the problem as he looked to the others rifle, side... Him falling on him... stumbling... "Ah~! Are you okay!?" Taking a step forward he frowned slightly. Curse being clumsy. He wasnt usually, save for today of course.

"Im so sorry ~ Is there anything I can help you with? M-maybe you should sit on the couch a couple minutes." he looked around trying to find one. Why today~!?

At the question he blushed and looked down at his feet twisting his hands slightly... "Well... I... I was cold and so... I was hurrying to get here cause... it was warm..." the last couple words were a bit mumbled out of his embarrassment at having run into the other for such a silly reason.

Calhoun was a bit taken aback by the newcomer's reaction to the situation, unsure of what to say for a moment. Most others the stag was used to conversing with weren't above apologizing about something like this, but so severely... he seemed almost terrified. A smile spread on his face as he waved his free hand dismissively. "No, no, it's okay! I was standing in the middle of everything; I should've moved," he said quickly, not wanting the squirrel hybrid to try to take all the blame for what just happened. There really was no need for any sour attitude over this, and he didn't want the other to be nervous; Calhoun didn't know exactly how to act around nervous people.

He blinked as the squirrel noticed what had happened with the rifle, turning his eyes down to the partially-hidden firearm. He was surprised that it was noticed, but thought back to how he was acting; it was pretty difficult to hide it. He winced slightly, but shook his head. "It's alright, I'm fine. Just got the wind knocked outta me a bit is all. Sitting down would probably be best. It's my fault for bringing it; I can't break old habits very well," he replied, smiling. It wasn't as if he had actually been trying to break the habit, but it was his fault for being so distrusting of everyone. Not that he'd actually use the thing on someone unless they meant to kill, but it was nice to keep around sometimes to keep those people at bay, just in case.

Taking the squirrel's advice, Cal located a vacated couch in the room and meandered on over to take a seat as his head tilted to listen as to why the pink-haired boy had rushed in. Even though it was obvious he was embarrassed about the whole thing, Cal couldn't help but snicker at the situation. Flopping down onto the couch, he maneuvered the rifle to rest on the outside arm of the couch and out of immediate... harming distance. "Hey, good enough reason for me. If you're cold, you can take a seat next to me. It's warmer with other people," he offered, patting the cushion next to him in an invite. "My name's Calhoun, by the way. What's yours?"

((Eee ~! I love Calhoun already Mooger~! XD He's a doll ~ x3 <3 ))

Ears flicking slightly as they finally perked a little at not being in trouble for the situation, he opened his mouth the argue but stopped and let out a small sigh instead. Nicea noticed the others wince and frowned again, feeling horrible about running him over in sheer selfishness for warmth. Ears perking all the way finally he blinked. “A habit?” What an odd habit to have… Leaning down he picked up his book that he had dropped when he had stumbled, for he normally came to read, though it seemed he’d have company today.

Subconsciously he had followed after Calhoun and at the invitation he glanced at the stag curiously. Was that just a kind invitation or was the other teasing him? Or perhaps he… Nah ~ even as he contemplated, he sat next to the stag and at the question of his name he looked at him. “Nicea. It’s nice to meet you ~ Im sorry it had to be in such a horrible fashion…” He gave a bit of an embarrassed smile before pulling his legs crossed onto the couch, putting the book in his lap.

(( XD Yaay~ He's one of my more easy-going boys. Soooo sorry it took me so long to reply~ D: I'm gonna try being a lot more active in this RP. *nods* <3 ))

Cal cocked his head up to Nicea as he questioned -- albeit to himself -- over the unusual habit of his. He turned his head over to the side again, smirking a bit as he realized how odd it must sound. Scratching his head a bit at the situation, he snickered, "Yeah, sounds a little weird, huh? Well... it's kinda a long story." He shrugged; he wasn't even sure he completely understood the subconscious act of carrying around a rifle himself, he just hoped that he wouldn't be arrested one day because of it.

The stag hybrid watched as Nicea picked up his dropped book, flinching briefly. He hadn't realized the squirrel had been carrying anything, and if he had known about it he may have helped with it.

However, Calhoun was glad to note that, although the dark-skinned squirrel seemed quite wary of him and kept what seemed to be an emotional barrier up between the two of them, that he still sat next to the stag. At least this meeting wasn't going badly, though it looked like Nicea was afraid it was headed in that direction. "Eh, I've had worse first impressions than this. At least there's no hard feelings between us, which is basically all it boils down to," he explained.

"So... Nicea? That's a name I've not heard before. Very original," he smiled. "You... like to read?" Now wasn't that just the most obvious question? He shrugged it off, knowing he was only trying to make conversation. Some things just didn't come naturally to Cal, so he had to make due with what circumstance gave him.

(( X3 <333 Its okay ~ I almost forgot we had this going x3; ))

The squirrel shrugged at the reply he received about the 'odd habit'. "Eh... Everyone has quirks." He gave a smile and he looked over at Calhoun. The idea of a worse first impression seemed almost ridiculous. "Wow... I cant imagine..." He looked at the ceiling a moment, hands holding onto his ankles, book in his lap, though he looked over and smiled, "Yeah, thank goodness..." He would've hated that close to the first other hybrid he'd met and after a mere seconds there was already bad blood...

Blushing a little he looked at his hands, then grinned at the stag. "Well, now you have ~ Thank you..." And at the comment about reading, he looked at his book, poking at it a little. "Oh... yeah. I normally come here to read. It's normally a little bit quieter than the estate I live at." He passed a smile to the other.

(( DD: Me too, which sucks because I like them both. <333 ))

Calhoun nodded at Nicea's comment, laughing slightly. "True, that," he agreed; there was plenty of evidence of that where he currently resided, albeit they were usually less... visually apparent. Ah well, there was always a reason for a person's less-favorable attributes, and just as Calhoun liked to believe, nobody was entirely 'sane.'

He turned his head so he could face Nicea as the squirrel leaned back to glance at the ceiling. "Really? Then it's probably a good thing you haven't run into anything worse," he said, actually kind of relieved to hear him say that. The squirrel had been so petrified just a moment ago with what had happened, he couldn't imagine what would have happened if he had run into someone less inviting as Calhoun had been, such as Roku... or even Eiji, for that matter. He cringed at the thought; even he didn't want to deal with them very often.

Calhoun smiled as he caught the blush across Nicea's dark features as he complimented him on his name. "You are very welcome," he said with a nod of his head in a slight bow, the tips of his fingers from his hand on the armrest flicking at the brim of his hat. He watched Nicea's hand as he prodded at the book in his lap and snickered a little at the reaction before answering, "Ah, that makes sense. Maybe the landlady here has more of an iron fist than where we live? Because I have the same problem." There was always that question in his mind, asking if they ever slept at night. "What do you like to read?" Not that it was any of his business, but it may give him a little more insight into who Nicea really was.

The stag had pressed his upper arm firmly against his side to ease off the pain that had jolted his side earlier, and by now it had seemed to be working. He was sure it was going to leave a bit of a bruise in the next few days, but that wasn't too big of a deal; after all, it wasn't immediately noticeable, and since the pain was practically gone by this point, it would only bug him if it was bumped. He relaxed his arm so that it wasn't putting anymore pressure on his torso, and although it let off a sharp pain for a moment at the change, it was definitely better. Exhaling, he leaned back into the back of the couch more comfortably, relaxing. What a day...

((Bwahaha! XD Him running into Roku would've been interesting o_____o;;; it would've been a stand off xD;; <3 I think...))

"Mm... I don't know. Possibly. I know the lady that runs our Estate just doesn't really care as long as no one trashes the place... But even if it was trashed, there's people there that would end up cleaning it up anyways." One them being himself. His tail gave a small flick as he glanced over at Calhoun, quietly hoping that he wasn't hurt to bad. He knew even if it did hurt, the stag didn't seem to be the kind of person to admit it.

Ears perking his attention was drawn back to the conversation at once. "Books? Oh, well..." He looked down at the book; it was a nonfiction on history. "I like everything really... I really like nonfiction." It kept his mind from wandering to far into the dream world, versus if he read fantasy or fiction, where he started to drift from reality. He liked being in control of his mind; he hated the air-heady feeling you get, or the sense that nothing is real.

(( XDDD That would be amusing -- squirrel vs. dragon! O.o;;; ))

Calhoun couldn't help but laugh at the predicament Nicea's landlady put the residents in, though he tried to cover his mouth as soon as he could to stifle it. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," he coughed out after a bit. "That's a good way to keep people in line, that's for sure." Seems she was like a mother to them, in a way, though he was just speculating on the matter; he wasn't sure if Nicea saw it that way, and didn't want to jump to conclusions.

He fidgeted slightly, pretending to be resituating how he was seated on the couch. When he had laughed he realized, with a start, that that wasn't such a bright idea, the pain in his side already starting to come back a little. He pressed his arm back against it like it was an unconscious act, smiling at Nicea as he noticed the concerned look in his eyes.

He was glad when the conversation went back to the books instead of him; it made him a little uncomfortable when the spotlight was on him, even if it wasn't unbearable. "I don't see why it would be a bad thing to like nonfiction; I say it's probably underrated. Some things you read about can't be made up, like fiction can, after all." Right? He was hoping he was getting it right. Being unable to read anything more than a few words was a bit hampering, so he was just going by what he observed from other people. His eyes darted away, hoping that he wasn't so obviously lacking in the reading department for it to show in his words, let alone his actions. It was a bit of an embarrassing subject, to say the least.

(( x3 It'd be funnnny ~ <3 ))

Nicea glanced at the other, ears perking, at the laugh curious. He couldn't help but give a small smile and shrugs, "It keeps us all in line. Not to mention there's Anatu who pretty much mommy's everyone." Nicea would help out and so would others, but it seemed, even though being one of the youngest, that the tiger had everything under control.

Tail flicking lightly, the squirrel blinked watching Calhoun a moment... "Wow... Are... you really real?" He gently poked the others arm and smiled lightly sitting back, a bit more relaxed, "It's not very often people will say that... It seems people are much more fond of made up things, versus facing the real life stuff..."

Looking back over he asked, "Do you read?" He meant that of course if he ever read for sport, not meaning to offend and what not.
PostPosted: Wed Aug 06, 2008 11:33 pm

(( And so it shall be. Stand-off, round one! Start! Ding ding! o.o; *shot* ))

Calhoun smiled, nodding as he understood. "It can make for a tough environment, but in the long run, you're better off with a place that's set up like that, I'm sure." There weren't too many people at MoogerMint's Complex that were very responsible in that sense... closest person the stag could think of was Kasi, and that was mainly out of habit than actual respect; the owl didn't even like people. He glanced back toward the squirrel at his side. "I'm hoping you don't give them too much grief," he said with a smirk before sitting back against the couch, "You don't seem like the type of person to do that, though."

"Hm?" the stag perked, wondering if it was the wrong thing to say. Well, it was obvious Nicea agreed with the sentiment, but the statement may have put Calhoun in a difficult position. No, he didn't really know how right he was, and that could stir up problems later. However, he could relate with it in the real world, how people would escape reality for a better one, whether they be lying to themselves in their mind or watching television or what-have-you. "People don't always like to face the facts. Let's face it, life can be tough. Some people find it tougher than others," he said, pulling it out of what he had experienced in life rather than in books.

And bingo! There it was. Calhoun was toast.

The stag flinched, freezing for a short time before fidgeting in place. "Was it that obvious?" he asked, a bit uneasy before his eyes flashed wide. "Oh, you meant non-fiction?" Damn, too late... He sighed, sinking further in the seat. He's gotta know now. Smooth move. He ran his hand through his bangs absently before giving a sheepish grin to Nicea.

Before Calhoun had any longer to mull over the mishap, the door to the sanctuary opened once more. A tall, mint-haired blue dragon entered, looking around before ice blue eyes landed on the two seated at the couch. His expression twitched, catching his breath between clenched teeth as he murmured, "Great..."

He closed his eyes, snorting before closing the door behind him. His claws scratched at the floor under his feet, but with something that was so constant, Roku long since ignored it. He waved his hand dismissively toward them, as if disregarding their existence as he entered further, heading toward the kitchen.

"Speak of the devil," Calhoun mumbled, cringing. Roku wasn't the most pleasant person to be around, and the stag had made that clear to the dragon before. This day was going down the tubes very quickly if something wasn't done to change it, quickly.

(( xD <33 ))

Nicea chuckled lightly at the comment, not sure if he should say he did or he didn't though he hoped he wasn't one of hose people you got that feeling from; his worries were invalid as the other finished the statement. He smiled, "I'm sure I do sometimes... But I try to help when I can."

Looking down at his books, he watched his fingers grip it a bit tighter then loosen it, ears going back lightly. "I suppose..." He knew how hard life could be, but in his opinion people had to learn to suck it up. He wasn't completely unsympathetic, but sometimes... sometimes it was just so annoying how people tried to drown out the world. "I think that's one of people in general biggest flaws... No one wants to face anything."

Sighing lightly he shrugged it off, no need to get over agitated by the topic, it was a peeve... Glancing over his ears went forward again at the others fidgeting. Was what so obvious? That he read? Then he was thrown off lightly by the fact his question had been misunderstood, actually, more like misinterpreted.

The squirrel canted his head, "Wait... you... mean--" He was about to ask if the other actually couldnt read, when he heard the door open and he couldn't help but look over seeing the dragon. His ears perked forward as he watched quietly then looked at Calhoun at the mumble, "Do you know him?"

His attention was once again drawn as the other walked to the kitchen giving a rather, so Nicea thought, rude wave, which made him frown... Why hadnt he come to say hello if he knew Calhoun?
