An interesting point was made that with some games coming out that will receive overwhelming attention (Halo 3 type attention that can be debated whether all that attention is deserved. Yes it can be debated.) and games that are just as good may be overlooked. It's not fair but it may happen. I'll let you talk about the specific games.

Here's the post that grabbed my attention and inspired the creation of this thread.

SuperJawes2112

Now I will send a disclaimer...Metal Gear Solid 4 is also on it's way for PS3, which will downlplay all other titles released in 08. Not to mention Resident Evil 5 and Grand Theft Auto IV. MGS4 will probably become the main title people play on PS3 (as some people do the same for Halo 3 and 360), but RE5 and GTAIV are on two platforms, and will have overwhelming attention. The Wii is in a similar state as the Gamecube was. There are plenty of good games, just not a lot of credit to be given.

EDIT: I know some of you have been looking forward to these games mentioned in that post and there's nothing wrong with that at all. The point I'm making/asking is that is it right that the attention they'll get overshadow some equally good games?

To be honest, they don't. GTA IV look's like it will just be San Andreas in a "new outfit". The same thing as San Andreas, except with new environments and better graphics. MGS4 looks good, just not nearly as good as the fanboys make it seem. Final Fantasy XIII? Oh, don't even get me started......face it people. It's going to be the same damn thing as the last few installments. Resident Evil 5 looks promising; I just hope character movement will be more fluid and free than it was in RE4.

The headliners have forever been headliners and will forever be headliners. MGS4, GTA, FXIII (which isn't gonna come out this year) are headliners. The fanboys will glorify them as gaming Messiahs and other games will be shunned. That's how it always is. The key for a non-headliner's (one that is as great as an actual headliner anyhow) survival is two things: 1) timing 2) ADVERTISEMENT. If a game's release date is handled with care it will come out on a day that is either a while before a headliner or a while after a headliner. And even if a game is God's gift to gamers, if there is little to no advertisement for it, then no one's gonna buy it. Look at Okami & Beyond Good & Evil for instance! They were both fantastic games! But I never saw advertisement for either except in gaming magazines. And that's not where they're needed. If an ad for a game is in a magazine, chances are it's useless there because if a person reads a gaming magazine, then they're gonna read the reviews! An add needs to be either a commercial or a display in a store.

Rockstar is bad with marketing.

I mean, c'mon, you had THE BEST(bar none) ad for San Andreas, and you only showed it on G4 at late night, and Spike TV when they showed CSI?

Konami, well, I've never seen a Metal Gear Solid commercial in my life.
Ever.

Squenix is too busy with Kingdom Hearts, there new Flagship, to give a damn about making a GOOD ad for FF13. Bad J-Pop+Bad CGI=Bad Ad.

Capcom needs to work out it's priorities before I can comment on there marketing skills.

Hey, I have the best idea ever for these guys: Let Apple market your products. They may bullshit about what they sell on a daily basis, but America is so dumb, it's bound to sell anyways.

Sweetie, headliners don't need ads. They have fanboys (both extreme-irritating ones who need to be locked in a corner, and the intelligent ones who are fans but aren't drama queens-a breed dying out I'm afriad). A lot of fanboys.

EDIT: And yes they do need to learn to ------- advertise! Why is it that crappy games always get the most marketing?

That only works with Halo.
Why?

It's an FPS.

Right now, People give two shits about what someone says about MGS4.
I'm one of those people, but that's...actually, it's right on the point.

In this world, no one cares what you say unless your Cthulhu or God.
The only thing that'll get people to buy s**t is Ads, or pulling a Hostel on an entire economy.

The only thing close to an MGS4 ad I've seen is a 5-second clip on those wierd $399 Ps3 commercials.

Actually, Daxel, lots of people in my class think Metal Gear Solid 4 is going to be awesome. Anyone in my class who even considers Ps3 (which is more than the people in Canis Lupus' class) thinks MGS4 is going to be the ultimate sexy time.

My Whole ******** School is hooked on Kingdom Hearts 2 and Super Mario Galaxy.

And Of Course, Halo 3.

I can find some Team Fortress 2 players, and a Couple of People who played Bioshock, but then again, those people watch Spike TV.

Something that is really surprising me is how Devil May Cry 4 has not been headlined at all...at least for now. Thinking of it, i don't remember seeing ads for any DMC games (not that I remember). Do you think the whole making it multi-platform made it lose or gain popularity?

That's an interesting point. DMC4 looks so good that it actually has me interested in the series again. But no one seems to care, and I think you may be right. It's multiplatform, so it has now become "that game I'll get to when I'm done with Uncharted/Mass Effect/MGS/Supreme Commander."

Whose to say it being multiplatform is the reason it became that? It could be just overshadowed like I was saying in the first post. It's a sad thought knowing that many great games are pushed aside for some that are of equal or less equal greatness.

We all know there have been games that have been mediocre at best and they get more attention, praise and credit that some games that may actually be better.

Now, how many of those that end up being good do you think will not be noticed/under credited/under praised compared to the others from other consoles like the ones mentioned in the first post? That quote in the fist post was actually part of the last quote from the conversation. That helps illustrate the point.

Wii's good games of 08:

Brawl
Wii Fit
Mariokart Wii
No More Heroes (for those who like those kinds of games)
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers
Harvest Moon
Brothers In Arms: Road To Hill 30 (Sure, it's a port but Wii needs all the FPS games it can get)

And there's a new Red Steel project underway, and after learning from their mistake of rushing the first one, Ubisoft is going to take their sweet time in making sure this one is perfect.

Yes, those are "good" games, but they're not "wow" material, except for maybe, Brawl. I know Wii Fit is going to sell, but are you honestly gonna categorize it as a "good" game?
Of course it's going to be a good game. The only thing that people need to ge their asses up to exercise is some sort of coach as a motivator. WiiFit will facilitate that.

As for "wow" games, MarioKart will dominate the racing world. There really hasn't been a bad MarioKart yet. One might be better than another, I don't think they've managed to bomb anything like Super Mario Sunshine. I've only seen one trailer for No More Heroes, but that definitely looks like a "wow" game in production.

You can bet if DMC4 were exclusive to either console, it would be getting ALOT more attention from gamers. Fanboys would constantly point to it as a selling point for their console of choice, and to show support would probably end up buying it. Now it's just sort of a game that's out there for anyone to play and doesn't showcase the capabilities of either system.

To Bad DMC 2 and 3 where subpar.

2 more than 3, 3 was a little better, but still.

The new Tales of Symphonia game. Seriously that's the game that I want next year. It looks to be a good game, no matter if the story is corny and cheesy. I think it would be over looked because it's an RPG game and hell it might be one disc long. But I think the new ToS game will have a new battle system. *Fanboy squees*

But in reality DMC4 will get lost somewhere. I don't see it selling well on the 360 than the PS3. 360 owners don't seem like the Sudo-Anime looking gamers type.
