 The air was chill with the air of winter, and the sky was as blue as the kitsusagi that trotted through the tall grass growing along the edge of the forest realm.
Shardre often paused along her wandering path to peer under rocks or inside hollow logs, just to see what there was. A relative new-comer to the area, she was as curious as a monkey in a button factory. But, despite how fascinating everything was, she was really interested in finding a cave. One with treasure!

Hoshiko had been following a set of sky-blue tails for the last half mile. Two of the tails were circled with bands of shiny, and every so often they stopped to investigate something. Hoshiko had been doing her best to move silently like a great ninja, or the slightly ditzy daughter of a great ninja, should.
But ohhh, should couldn't take it anymore! What were the tails stopping for? What were they looking for? Who had she been following for the last fifteen minutes?
Unable to tolerate the mystery any longer, she broke her silence and bounded forward.
"Whatcha doin'?" she asked cheerfully.

Shardre, who had been in the midst of poking her nose under a she'd lifted to see the little scurrying things - what manner of creatures were these! - yelped in surprise as her solitary expedition was suddenly interrupted, and banged her head on the rock she'd dropped.
"Ooo..." She rubbed her forehead furiously and looked behind to see who had caused her surprise. The kitsu was a girl, pale in complexion, but with the longest and thickest raven hair she'd seen on any kitsu. Though, in all honesty, Shardre hadn't seen many other kitsusagi!
"I'm exploring, of course!" she answered her fourth tail, acting as if it was obvious. "That's what all brave adventurers do! We explore to see new lands, and fight evil monsters, and find hidden treasure." Shardre flicked her tails and grinned. "Are you an adventurer too?"

"I am!" replied Hoshiko without even a moment's hesitation. All the blue kitsu had said sounded very, very exciting. And it was unfortunate she had hit her head and Hoshiko felt a little bad about it, but she seemed to be recovering well. And she was more than blue! She had pretty horns and pretty hair! Wow!
"I'm Hoshiko!" she exclaimed, sticking out a paw. New best friend, right right right? She was sure they would be. After all, they both liked exploring! And an adventure would be perfect to practice things a Good Ninja should be able to do. Like turn into said. Dad and her older sister could do that one, but she still hadn't quite figured it out.

Shardre wagged her tails at the enthusiastic answer from her companion, but when she held out a paw, Shardre tilted her head and gave it a look of confusion.
"...What're you doing?" she asked, wondering if Hoshiko was pointing at something, or trying to offer her something... but her paw looked empty! "And where are your horns? And face tendrils?"

"My what's?" asked Hoshiko, withdrawing her paw and batting at her face as if trying to find gaping holes on it. What? Oh, wait, no, that was her eye...
"I don't think I know anyone with horns," she said. Well, there were those gem kitsus, but that was something else. "Or... Face tendrils?" she asked, utterly confused.
"What's you name?" she asked.

"You know! Your face dangly thingies! These things!" Shardre brushed the light blue tendrils amongst her hair as example... nevermind that she was the only one with such odd features.
"No one with horns?" She frowned sadly. "But... I have horns! And you know me now, right?" Taking a dainty step back, she knelt in a graceful bow to Hoshiko. "I'm Shardre! Well met, Hoshiko! What are you exploring for out here?"

"Face dangly things?" Asked Hoshiko, leaning forward to investigate. "Nope, never seen anything like em," she said, but the subject was changing so quickly she at last knew what it was like for other people to talk to her.
"I was practicing all the things a good ninja should be able to do!" she said happily. "Like, you didn't hear me walk up behind you, didja? That's 'cuz I have awesome Ninja skills."

"Ooooo..." Shardre's eyes widened appreciatively. "No, I didn't hear you at all! ..." She tilted her head. "...what's a ninja?"

Hoshiko was stunned, but only for a second. How could Shardre not know what a ninja was? Inconceivable! (Of course, Hoshi had grown up surrounded by Ninjas, so her perception was somewhat skewed.) She'd have to educate her!
"Ninjas are like superheroes, only cooler! They're fast! And strong! And quiet! And have cool magic powers!"
She was practically bouncing.
"Like, my dad and my sister can turn into sand! And I'm trying to learn how!"
She closed her eyes and scrunched up her face, but nothing happened.
"I'm not quite there yet," she added.

Shardre listened closely, scrunching up her eyebrows and flicking her ears as Hoshiko babbled excitedly. She wasn't sure what superheroes were, but she understood how impressive they must be to be so fast and strong... and magical powers?!
She nodded sympathetically, though she was disappointed, she wanted to see what it looked like when someone turned into sand! ...Hopefully they'd be able to turn back?
A thought suddenly occured to Shardre. "Hey! Maybe I'm one of those ninj-thingies too! They have magical powers, right? Like this?" Shardre held up one of her paws. As she concentrated, a flicker of blue electricity traced over her paw, crackling like static, and then quickly vanished. "...though I can't do it very well," she admitted, sticking her tongue out and smiling sheepishly.

Well, it was better than Hoshiko could do, so therefore she was amazed.
"WOWTHATISSOCOOL!" she squealed, bouncing a few more times. "Where'd you come from that you've got horns and face jiggly things and MAGIC? Must be some crazy awesome far off land made of awesome!"
She was off on a tangent now, babbling away and barely ever pausing for air. In other words, business as usual.
"So yeah," she finished, finally stopping. "Where're yah from?"

Shardre backed up a step, a little overwhelmed by the, ah, enthusiastic kitsu (to put it mildly). "M-me? Well..." A secretive look crossed the blue kitsu's face and she glanced around, as if someone would be listening in. Leaning closer to Hoshiko, she whispered, "Promise you can keep a secret?"
Without waiting for an answer, she said, "I'm actually from another planet!"

"Really?????" Asked Hoshiko, a bit too loud. Then, remembering it was a secret, she dropped her voice. "You mean they have Kitsus on other planets? Woaaaaaaah."
This was totally the best thing ever. She and Sharde were going to be Best Friends Forever now. This was just too awesome.

Hoshiko's obvious fascination was enough to puff up Shardre's pride, and she preened a bit before remembering what she'd originally been doing.
"Oh! Right, so, as an adventurer-ninja-person, what're you looking for out here? Personally, I'm searching after a cave with possible treasure hidden away in it, protected by nasty monsters (they're always guarding treasure of some sort, or treasure's always surrounded by monsters, whichever way). Perhaps we are on the same quest and may combine our powers to thus be more efficient in our adventuring?"
