The shopping centre is full of lights and colours and people. Loki struggles through, one arm weighed down by a multitude of shopping bags, while her other arm is full of Kirra. The Eden toddler flaps and giggles, struggling to be put down so she can take a closer look at all the interesting things – the Christmas trees with their shiny baubles, the toys on display, and all the pretty boxes and ribbons. It’s getting increasingly difficult to keep hold of the squirming child.

Abruptly, the toddler gives a delighted shriek, right by Loki’s ear. She’s spotted Santa’s Grotto, and the line of children waiting for their photos. Well, why not? Loki thinks, and swings into the line, letting Kirra down to the floor at last.

“Santa?” Kirra squeals, and Loki nods agreement.

“Just stay in line, okay? Won’t be long.”

“Yaaaaay!” Kirra bounces, looking around at the other children, her excitement too much to keep to herself.

"Are you suuuure you're willing to wait to see Santa, hun?" Alaina asks once again, nibbling on her lower lip at the sight of the length of the line still to visit the fat man's lap.

Garrett gives an assured nod, squeezing his guardian's hand tighter at the lull of movement as the line shuffles all of two feet forward. He fixates his golden eyes upon the lavishly decorated throne, the elves in unflattering tights, and the mountain of presents beneath the decorative false evergreen. He's willing to wait as long as it takes, just for the chance to ask Santa if he got his letter!

Alaina sighs, giving in to her boy's determination, or perhaps stubbornness. She slips her fingers out of Garrett's grip to readjust the sleeping blonde baby girl against her shoulder. Her shopping bags are at her feet in anticipation of a long enough wait to allow herself the break from carrying the dreadfully heavy things.

The winged boy's eyes wander over the faces nearest him, examining their unique features and perking his upturned ears to fragments of conversation..

Kirra hops from foot to foot on the spot, trying to make the line move faster by force of will. It's so slooow, and nothing's happening.

"San-ta-san-ta-san-ta-san" she sings to herself. Her hopping turns into a little spinning dance as she tries to keep her spirits up.

Dizzy, she comes to a stop and steadies herself against her mother's leg. Then she catches sight of another child watching her. He seems so very focused, kind of serious.

"Santa!" she proclaims, giving him a big smile and a wave, spreading her wings in greeting.

It's first the movement that catches his eye, then the vibrant colours, of the girl child's wings that draws his attention her way. Immediately, his face betrays him, as he looks absolutely stunned for probably the first time ever.

It takes him a moment of rapid thought to force his hand upward to return the wave. He cocks his head to the side, and with this movement, the opposing wing peeks up over his shoulder in almost its own sort of hello wave. W-wings. Like his own, only.. not.

Kirra tilts her head to the side, almost mirroring the boy, then claps her hands in delight. He has wings too! She rushes over, oblivious to his confusion, aware only that she has a new friend.

"'M Kirra, we're seeing Santa! Your feathers are brown!" she tells him, as if this is an amazingly good trick.

She scoots around him to get a better look at his wings. They aren't just plain brown, but all different shades, she notices, coming back to stand in front of him.

"Santa gives presents!" she adds, looking at his face again, still beaming happily.

Standing upright as soon as she approaches, Garrett finds himself transfixed by the colours of her hair, her wings, and even her outfit. He almost forgets to respond to her rapid conversation, though for a second he doesn't even know where to begin.

"I'm Garrett," he tries first, twisting around in his place to keep his eyes on Kirra's wings just as she is examining his own. "You has wings too. And they're BRIGHT."

The line has shuffled forward a bit, but the excitable toddlers take up all the room provided from this next move, so Garrett ignores the need to move up with it. Instead, he shakes his head, his scruffy hair tossing across his brow and against his upturned ears, as if to clear his suddenly clouded mind. Bright wings, and on a girl! What a concept!

"I has wings," Kirra agrees, a little puzzled. Why wouldn't she? But she lets the matter go. "An' I like bright!" she proclaims instead, fluttering one wing out so that she can see it herself and compare it to Garrett's. It's kind of the same, just the colours make it seem different. Maybe it's because he's a boy. She flaps it once and furls it again, a little awkwardly.

"An' I like brown, too," she adds. "I like all colours!" She nods to herself, and the feathery tips of her hair swing with the movement.

"What do you like?"

He seems a little taken aback by the question, but responds much faster now that he is slowly getting used to her appearance. "I like music and watching peoples," he responds carefully in his gruff tone, rubbing his forearm with the opposing hand, wondering if that was the appropriate answer.

He also allows his wings the opportunity to stretch out, something he rarely does in company, as it usually seems to get a negative response for a reason beyond his comprehension. It just made him having them a little more awkward. But she's doing it, so he takes this as an invitation to do the same!

Kirra smiles as Garrett stretches his wings. It's not comfortable keeping them tucked up like that all the time, she's amazed he's kept them so still for so long. The brown wings seem very large, bigger than hers, maybe.

"Music!" she cheers. "I like music too! An' singing! Can you sing? Oh!"

The line has moved, and her mother has turned around to see where she is.

Kirra grabs Garrett's hand and skips forward to catch up, tugging her new friend to come with her.

Garrett opens his mouth to respond to her question, but as he's tugged along to keep up with the line, he shuts it just as quickly. He hadn't noticed the jump in the line, and probably wouldn't have, had she not jolted him out of his tunnel vision.

"Not really," he mumbles into his shoulder. Mum had told him that most birds can sing, and this was true of most of the pretty songbirds at the parks around his house, but if Garrett is part bird, it must be some kind that can't sing, to his disappointment.

"What about you?" he adds as an afterthought. Most of the able-to-sing birds have pretty colours, and Kirra has pretty colours, so, in his logic, pretty colours means able to sing!

Kirra notices the change of tone. "Aww. You learn?" she says encouragingly, with a vigorous nod of her head. "I sing. But Mummy says not inside."

She pauses, scrunching her face up to express her distaste for the rule. Strictly speaking, what Mummy actually said was 'sing softly or go outside', but she doesn't quite see what the problem was. So what if the cats ran away? Singing is supposed to be loud - that's how you know it's singing! Kirra peers up at the ceiling, so very high above, but decides it's probably not high enough to count as 'outside'. Better not risk it, when they're so close to Santa. He might think she's naughty.

A woman pushes out of line, apparently giving up, to the dismay of the screaming child dragged at her heel. Garrett winces at the noise, shrinking closer to Kirra to take his mind off it.

"Maybe I can learn singing," he replies neutrally, trying to convince himself as much as her. His right wing jerks involuntarily, its feathers ruffling. Shrinking away this time, Garrett feels his face grow hot in embarrassment.

"How you keep your wings all nice?" Garrett asks, hastily rubbing his dark hands at his cheeks as if capable of rubbing away the blush.

"Huh? Nice?"

Kirra blinks, trying to figure out what he means. Nice is good, but she looks at Garrett's twitching wing and reddening face, the way he moves away. Her wings make him mad? But they're the same. Wings. Feathers. His are just as nice as hers.

"I, um." she pauses helplessly, shrugging her shoulders. Her wings flutter open instinctively to balance her against the movement, and then settle again as her shoulders drop. "I dunno, they just wing," she says.

"Mine dun like me," he begins to explain as the line moves up again, this time rather significantly as a family of large quantity visits Santa together. He shoots a look over his shoulder at his twitching right wing, attempting to scold it by imitating the look his mother gives him.

He forgets all about this, though, as he notices they're only a few people away from Santa now. "Almost there, Kirra, almost there," he exclaims breathlessly, bouncing up and down in excitement he can't quite contain.

Kirra looks at Garrett's wing again, tilting her head from side to side to see what it will do. It doesn't look like a mean wing to her, but she guesses Garrett would know better. "Aww, why not? I like you," she says, then leans towards the twitching wing, and speaks to it in a breathy stage-whisper, as though it's a big feathery ear. "Hey wing. Be nice, cos Santa."

She nods to herself again, and then looks around. Garrett's right, the line got *short* She can nearly see what's going on up ahead. She presses herself up onto her tiptoes, but she wobbles so much that even her wings can't help her. She totters there for a moment, then has a better idea and crouches down, peering between legs. A glimpse of red and white.

She squeals shrilly, unable to find words for her delight. "He is, he is, he's there!" she squeaks, looking up at Garrett.
