06. Past Life and Powers
As Yuelin lay in bed one night, tossing and turning in a fever, she dreamed of a world where all the myths and folktales she had heard as a child tumbled together.
Above a sea of clouds, the palace of the Middle Kingdom stood aloof and proud on the highest mountain of the land, and myths and rumors surrounded the Emperor who dwelled within the palace walls as thickly as clouds veiled the palace. One hundred and eight demons lay restlessly imprisoned in the deepest and darkest of the underground dungeons that ran far below the gilded tiles.
When the restless shiftings of the demons would shake the palace grounds, these earthquakes served as a constant reminder of the power and the mortality of the royal house. The emperor's divine blood sealed a covenant between the cloud-dwelling immortals and the earthly people; the immortals kept an eye on the mortal world through their proxy, and the people enjoyed the guidance of a ruler--as well as protection against the demons.
When a comet tore through the sunset clouds at the same moment the thirteenth emperor's first son and heir was born, the astrologists foresaw great change during the lifetime of the prince. Only a few obscure prophets from long ago foresaw that a fierce disagreement between the emperor and his heir would end in the release of the sealed demons, who promptly vented their centuries-old grievance by ravaging the landscape. But no one anticipated that the world, in the midst of the demonic destruction, would simply slide into oblivion.
After Yuelin woke, cured of her fever, she could not for the life of her remember just what exactly had preoccupied her thoughts during her illness. Without her knowledge, just before the dream-world, and he with it, faded into oblivion, the prince hoped for a second opportunity to live in a world where he might make his own choices without being shackled to destiny. Considering who became the guardian of his second life, perhaps he did not really get his wish after all.
