So im about to order my first doll without a faceup. and im very torn. i often like the faceups they come with, but this time, i dont and want to mimic another style. however i often get caught on the faceups not being good enough, and then: can i replicate the style i want well enough?
(and how much to do this will this cost??? @_@)

so i wanna know your guys opinions: do you like doing your own faceups, just using the standard the doll comes with, or commissioning someone to do it for you? (or other?)

Currently all my dolls have the faceups they came with, although I need to fix Reila's because I don't like how it's done.

If you're ordering the AR girl... I say pay the extra wad of cash and get the faceup done. AR faceups are GORGEOUS.

well, I still have Adriyn's original face-up, but I thought that it would be fun to re-do Lena's face-up, and it turned out horribly! *isn't a pro artist, but not too bad either* now that I've re-done Lena's face-up 5+ times I'm rather pleased with it... so if you feel comfortable with your skills, go for it! or if you think you can't get it, you can always send her off to a face-up artist...

I'm at a loss on how to actually do them. I think I'd be fine with most of it, it's just the sealer that I am confused on.. I cant find Mr.Super Clear anywhere and all the ones I can find are permanent and cant be taken off. Also.. the pastels, are they difficult to wash off? Do you really NEED a airbrush kit to use the paints?

As for actually doing the doll faceups, once I understood it, I think I'd be decent at it, though better with practice.

MSC is not allowed to be sold in the US, for one.
It eats braincells. (Aimee's description of it was the best. It was something along the lines of "Oh! It's got such a cute name! And it smells sweet. But guess what? IT EATS BRAINS!")
Testors, however, does not look as good as the MSC. You can order MSC online if you need to.

I wonder if that mean that the volks store isn't going to sell it.... (and I bought my can of it here! ^_^ (anime cons are great loop-holes!)

I also have a can of Testors dullcote (still good, seals face-ups, but doesn't have quite the same awesome texture...) and you can buy that at hobby stores! (relatively easy to find!)

and as far as airbrushes go for paints, it fades paints out nicer, but is not at all necessary (never used one) and I used pastels, and they work pretty well, just make sure to coat the surface before using them or else 1) they don't spread evenly and 2)its a lot harder to get it off uncoated resin. and for my first few face-ups I did use human make-up! blushes and eyeshadows are ok as long as they don't have any oils in them (almost none do) and actually almost anything that is oil-free is ok to use for face-ups! (colored pencils too!)

I don't have my own BJD yet... crying ....but I plan on doing my own face ups! 3nodding

I don't care if it takes me 10 times to do it. I think it would be really cool to do my own face up mostly because it's something that I did myself and because then my dollfie would really feel as if he/she was completely and uniquely mine. It would distiguish him/her from the others of his/her type (going to pretend I'm getting a boy for my first since it's annoying typing he/she, him/her, etc.) and I think if anyone would know how I want my dollfie's personality best it would be me and so I think that I sort of...have a duty to my dollfie to do it myself so that I can help him show (through his face up) who he is on the inside; who I understand him to be....(lol does that even make any sense??)

lol I'm the biggest dork ever rofl (I don't even have a dollfie yet and I'm making a big speech thingy about him... sweatdrop )...but that's how I feel. whee <<<

Well face-ups are...tricky...

Generally getting the face-up materials cost more than the face-up itself. Everything that I got for my first and only so far face up cost about $70 plus a bit of skill keeping your hand steady and/or drawing experience which helps. My first face up was absolutely terrifying for me, but came out very nice, though not quite professional looking. However, if you plan to do more face-ups then doing your own face-up could be a cheaper alternative. It all depends on your skill and willingness to make mistakes.

And I use Testor's Dullcote, which after so many coats looks slightly yellowish and may not exactly match the skin tone, but it's not a bad alternative if you don't want to spend 20+ on MSC.

I'm thinking that when I get my own darling, I'll be doing her face-up....
Although the DoD face-ups are nice, I really want to bond with her that much more...

I'm not going to be using MSC (I have no clue how to get it to Canada), I can't find Testor's, So I'll be using Games Worshop Matte-Clear Finish for models. Someone on DoA tested it and it seemed to come out well...

I may also just order a head first from DoD and try out some face-up's on that before getting all of my darling...

Now that is a good idea, and when you are done, you can sell the head with face-up if it's good, or without to get back most of your original price.

I did Clover's faceup myself and I really like how it turned out... Actually I like it enough that I don't want to remove it to do more faceup practice. *chuckles* I really don't find it that hard. Might just be because I'm a craft person. *Shrugs*

If you want to try a lot of experamental things you could always go over to DoA and see who's doing faceups for the cost of shipping. I'm even considering doing that soon because it would be fun and good for name credit. mrgreen
