 In Dream Valley, in a quiet little aclove far from the hussle and bustle of pony this and that's, a young filly gazed dreamily across the water, watching the delicate little dragonflys do their skipping dance along the soft ripples of the pond. Under the surface, little fishes had a dance of their own, flowing in seamless patterns among one another. She was a young girl, but her faraway red eyes seemed somehow more thoughtful and wise than a young one should be. The gentle breeze of the clearing ran soft hands along her minty green fur, combing through her red and white striped mane. Her head tilted lightly to one side, eyes half-lidded, as she began to fall asleep.

 Nicodemus trotted down the well worn path that ran along side one of the many ponds that dotted the landscape of the valley. Around his neck was draped a bronze pocket watch that he wore with a certain amount of pride. Nico did not wander into the wilderness to enjoy the simple rustic beauty, but instead to practice his "Talent". He knew every pony had a talent and in his herd alone he knew there were many different and wondrous things that the older pony could do. Some could control elements, others could sing with voices to rival angels...Nico wanted to see what he could do! Thinking these thoughts, little brown foal made his way along the waterside, unaware of any other beings in the area.

The rustles of an approaching pony brought DeMaris quickly from her drowsing state with a small and very unlady-like snort. The edges of the pond nearest to her muzzle frosted quickly over and melted just as fast, going unnoticed by the young filly.
Shaking her mane with a yawn, she rose and stretched before scanning the clearing in curiousity.
"Hello?"

Nico blinked and looked up, noticing a minty pony at the pond's edge. "Um Hi?" he called trotting into view. "Sorry, I didn't know anyone was out here."

Recognizing the brown colt to be about her age, DeMaris relaxed. She trotted quickly over to him, glancing at him shyly from under her candy cane colored forelock.
"Hi." She said again, quietly this time. Her tail twitched softly this way and that in anticipation.

"Hi," Nico said again offering the other baby a shy smile. "Um, I-uh, didn't know anyone was out here..."

DeMaris rolled her shoulders in a little half- shrug, ducking her head.
"I like this pond," she offered. " Nobody really comes here much...... well, I'm DeMaris." She said bravely, with a flash of a smile in her red eyes.

"Hi DeMaris!" the brown colt smiled. "It's a pretty lake," he offered looking around. "Oh right," Nico shifted nervously realizing he hadn't told her his name. "I'm Nicodemus."

"Nico....Nicode...Nicodemus." DeMaris struggled to pronounce the unfamiliar word. "Hi!"
She smiled proudly as she watched her new friend look over her pond. Then, she peered into the forest beyond him.
"Did you come from very far away?"

Nicodemus shook his head, "Most of my family lives around here, and you can call me Nico. What about you?"

DeMaris tilted her head to one side quizzically, her mane falling in a shower of red and white onto one side of her neck. She blinked at Nico, through long black lashes.
" I've always been here." She said as though it was the most obvious thing in the world." As far as I can remember."

" Nu uh." ,she replied with a shake of her head. " I've always lived here, by the lily pond. I almost never see other ponies. It's usually just me and the dragonflies." She grinned.

"Don't you get lonely?" Nico asked tilting his head. He lived with a herd of many families and was unable to image an existence by himself.

DeMaris pawed at the ground in from of her. Lonely? She didn't know that word, but for a long moment, she fought the idea of letting her new friend know he knew something she didn't. Finally, with a little sigh, she asked. "What's lonely?"
