Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Elites

What are EVs?

Many of you who are new to the world of Competitive Battling are probably wondering. What on earth are EVs? Not a problem. I am here to explain.

EVs stand for Effort Values. What are they many of you are asking. Remember how you saw a stat increase upon leveling up? that is what you call an Effort Value in the world of Pokemon. By knowing this, you can specifically train a Pokemon in a specific stat by EV training. An Effort Value is created through the gain of 4 Effort Points, so you know what that means. Gain 4 Effort Points and gain 1 Effort Value. Think of it as a reward.

What are Effort Points?

Effort Points are gained by defeating a Pokemon. Every Pokemon gives a different amount of Effort Points, and may give you the point for a different stat to.

Example:

Wild Pokemon Encountered
Wild Bidoof appeared
Blaziken was sent out
Blaziken used Blaze Kick
Wild Bidoof fainted

Now that Blaziken has defeated a Wild Bidoof, it will gain 1 Effort Point for the HP stat. Why HP you're asking? because that is the stat Bidoof provides the Effort Point to. Remember how I said that different Pokemon can give a point for a different stat? Bidoof specifically gives the point to HP. There are other Pokemon who can raise the points by more than 1 point so be sure to locate them for faster training.

So now that you know that Bidoof dishes out 1 HP Effort Point, you can go ahead and train in the HP stat if you want.

Is it really that straightforward?

Yes it really is this straightforward. Though there is something everyone should remember when EV training. A Pokemon can only have a total of 510 Effort Points which means you can't keep EV training until you reach level 100. Knowing this, you should carefully plan on which stats you wish to increase and make use of the Effort Points which will create Effort Values.

There is another important fact you must remember before starting your training. A single stat can only have a max of 255 Effort Points. I wouldn't advise giving a Pokemon 255 Effort Points if you are wanting to max out that stat. Go with 252 points. As learned earlier, 4 EP=1 EV. By giving a Pokemon 255 Effort Points, you will not gain anymore stats than you did with 252 Effort Points. You would be wasting 3 points right there. If you were to max out two stats you could save 6 Effort Points. Some points you could have used on another stat. You would only gain 1 measly Effort Value but still, why waste it?

Save time in EV training

There are some ways you can speed of the process of EV training. What I mean by that is that you can cut down the time you spend on EV training.

Have you heard of the items called: HP Up, Protein, Carbos, Calcium, Iron, Zinc? you probably have. When EV training, don't use all of those items. Simply use the ones that you planned to train your Pokemon in.

Example:

I want to train a Gible which will eventually evolve into a Garchomp. Garchomp's two strong stats are his Attack and Speed. I will provide 10 Protein, and Carbos to him. I will not give him any of the other vitamins.

Now that you've given your desired Pokemon the vitamins, time to equip an item on your Pokemon.
