Instrumental versions are usually better, because they have better sound.

Live, the instrumental version was amazing, I think it gains something from not having the singer somehow.

Well I personally love the contribution Christina Scabbia made for the song. She clearly understood how to capture the emotions of the lyrics with her voice and compliments the cellos very well. The video doesn't have any back story running through it and instead just focuses on her singing and the band playing. The lyrics pretty much tell the tale that the instrumental version cant. On a more commercial level one must take into account that very rarely do videos of instrumentals in modern music get made, with the exception of 'Path' of course. I think they did a brilliant job of it and the instrumental is just marginally better live.
