Ambroise still lacked the strength to fly long distances. Still only capable of hovering above the powdered snow, he had little choice other than to skip, run and prance about as any other foal might do. In a manner of speaking he found this somewhat annoying, the wings on his back deemed otherwise useless they were nothing more than an added weight against his back and yet he had seen what they could do...on so many levels.

...He had seen his father soar high into the sky, disappearing in a blaze of coloured lights while he could faintly recall the black stallion with multiple wings who seemed to fade from existence upon taking his leave. Ah yes, while they were an extra weight to him they seemed to be something much, much more important to others.

Why couldn't his be like that too?

Still unaware of the truth behind his wings, he was disgruntled rather than glad to have them. His sister had them too, but like him she struggled to fly any higher than he did - while his other two brothers...well it was as if they didn't even need them nor did they want them. They could run so much faster than he and all because they didn't have that weight!

"Do not fall behind, Ambroise." The smooth voice caused his tiny ears to p***k and with a squeak of surprise the foal quickened his already rapid pace to catch up to the tall stallion not far from him in the snow. Ah yes, at first it had been a game to jump in and out of his father's hoof prints, now it was a matter of necessity.

But alas...today was the day that his father had said that he would show him something very special...

Ambroise.

The name was one his mate had chosen and the name was also one that the weathered Angeni had echoed. Without the slightest hesitation, the blind stallion had come forth and turned his hidden gaze upon the four petite foals. It had been a bizarre event to say the least, the sage like beast flicking his tail idly as though summoned from beyond the veil to bless the children and miraculously he had...

Oddly, he had named the children but in a most unusual way. First and foremost he had turned his head to Althalus, the clever colt already nuzzling at his mother for food and with the faintest smile... Ah, how could Grencia forget? The great head had shifted to him at that moment and the words had sent chills down the spine of the adult.

"A friend may have been lost, but he is with you again..." he had said, immediately confusing the phoenix as he shifted his head round to observe the foals once again, "Althalus has kept his promise." To say these words had taken a while to understand and to sink in was an understatement but the naming had proceeded in much the same way until all four had been named.

Ambroise, was to be a creature of legend apparently...and the Angeni proclaimed he expected much of Althalus. Two the other two though he had chosen to be vague, their future's were not bleak but were cloudy indicating that the fates remained undecided on the path the pair would follow.

But now?

Well, Grencia had chosen to take this opportunity to show the eldest what he was to expect when he was older. Granted the babe could scarcely comprehend anything at this precise moment in time but if he were to show it to him now then somewhere down the line something would click and it would all make sense.

You see...Yei had decided that Ambroise would adopt the position of guardian over the slopes. While his mate would never completely give up her patrols, she had other responsibilities to attend to and she was firm in the belief that only family could do it right...For this reason, Ambroise needed to see just how extensive the mare's hold upon the slopes was. Hell, she didn't claim it all as her own but she did watch it.

"You know how dangerous it is to lag behind, you may play when we reach a safe point." Grencia offered with a small smile before continuing to drift up the side of the slopes, slamming his hooves into the snow to ensure the foal had enough footing to follow.

"I know, I know!" Still the voice of as foal, it would be a long time before Ambroise developed any form of seductive or even a remotely masculine voice but it was his hope that his would be just as smooth as his father's. It wasn't that he had a problem with his squeaky voice right at this moment in time, but later on when he had matured there would be no doubt that a girly voice would be absolutely out of the question.

"Sorry," he added, pouncing into another of the deep hoof prints to pursue his father up the slopes. Tiring work for one of his stature, he barely reached the stallion's shoulder and yet he was adamant that he would make it to the top. He was strong, just like his parents and new born or not he was damn well going to prove that!

But ooooh, how his legs hurt!

Wiggling his rump ever so slightly against the cold he was more than happy to hide behind his father, protected from the worst of the winds as he continued upwards. So far he couldn't quite see the reason for his father's actions, all he could see was a lot of snow and ooooh was his rump cold! Still, not one to argue he continued after his father obediently, until the pair at last rounded another slope and...

He gasped - below his hooves, right before his eyes was a whole new world. Away from the snow...there it lay, the Kawani lowlands.

"Worth the walk?" A teasing glint appeared in Grencia's eyes as he nudged his eldest song gently. The reaction was as he had expected, given the foal was so young the concept of something so big laying before him was bond to be surprising. Even so the way in which he wagged his tail so enthusiastically and ruffled his wings was more than a little endearing. Apparently, his son was one for scenery.

"What you see before you is everything that your mother strives to protect - the slopes primarily but should she ever be needed in the lowlands..." He paused to allow the words to sink in before continuing, "And perhaps some day that duty will fall on to you...but more now." He shook his head and released a small chuckle.

"It is your playground!" He motioned towards the bottom of the slopes and the extensive plains below, "A place where you will grow and have many adventures...but I do encourage you to take note of everything around you. Where everything is, the creatures that you meet." Ah, he had never really explored the lowlands himself but given Yei's extensive family and circle of friends he was certain she had explored every little part.

"It may prove useful."
