Like the description for the hammer item in Crate and Apparel, or for the Cig item in the Hat Rack...
But, I went to do this adopt an orphan event thing...and is it just me, or does Gaia seem to be perpetuating the idea that orphanages are dark, horrible places?
I'm sure some of the choicers are asking a related question "Why is gaia perpetuating the idea that adoption always seems to be a happy ending"
(Questions are based around the way Gaia has made the orphanage and the adoption agency buildings look on the event page)
Any ways, discussions?

Alot of people assume that all orphanages are horrible places and that the orphans are all starving and depressed.
Sure some orphanages might be bad, but not all and not all orphans are depressed either and many do get adopted into nice families.
It's all depends on the person and the type of place they live in,ect...

I'm just insulted is all. I understand gaia takes allot of freedom and liscence when it come to real world events...but the line does have to be drawn some where.
I'm positive quite a few people would be up in arms if they February event to "free the gaian slaves"
Or an event to "Liberate the gaian women"
No, I'm not saying that kind of s**t is going to happen. I'm just saying that Gaia has been doing a bit of insulting acts lately

I'm not saying you can't be insulted.
I'm just saying that many people assume things that may or may not be false.

Well, if you want to go by that logic, the items for the orphans are glorified liquor bottles, ether, etc. Are they saying that all orphans need is a bottle of J.D. and some drug-induced sleep, and they'll be good?
I'm just enjoying the event, not thinking about any politically correct slant.
Free items make me not want to complain. 3nodding heart

I doubt that the Powers That Be at Gaia believe that orphanages are bad places. I believe they are going with an "Oliver Twist" sort of idea.
And users are helping the orphans get items they need (even if the items are humorous and include Ether and Alcohol), then getting them cleaned up to be adopted on Christmas.
I don't know, I rather like the idea. Namely that I think the orphans are adorable (I'm keeping a record of all of mine, in my journal) and that they are getting people to spend some gold on an Event - and Gaia needs more people to be spending gold, even if it is only a bit, because they give out so much gold.
I would hope that people participating in the event are smart enough to know that it isn't a guide to how things really are.

sachiko_sohma I think one of my orphans just went insane eek I got that one, as "Damp Dan". He starts out looking like the kid from Ju-On (The Grudge) and then turns out bald and in a straight jacket.

1. It's satire. Perhaps it's poor taste, but Gaia is pretty much known for poor taste. These are the people who put a little boy in a radioactive bin for two weeks because he was annoying.
2. You're assuming all orphanages in the world are held to the same standards of American orphanages. It's actually pretty common for orphanages to be this bad in other parts of the world, not even third world countries. Might I suggest looking into Russian orphanages?
In this day and age IN AMERICA, orphanages aren't like this. They can be depressing and cruel by our standards, but not like this one Gaia is talking about. However, Gaia's drawing on themes like Oliver Twist (not to mention Futurama xd ) and I think the idea of caring for orphans is in itself a good idea. It seems like the event has raised awareness of orphans in general just from looking around the boards, but no one seems to feel that this is how American orphanages are.

They are presenting the situation in a very humorous way, so I just see it as a big exaggeration, rather than "perpetuating" and idea.

Actually, I really like the event. First, I'm amused by the fact that Gaia is poking fun at the stereotypes that go along with orphanages. I'm viewing the entire thing as satire, not the perpetrating the idea that orphanages are evil places. I mean, with quotes like "Please sir, can I have some more?" I just can't take it seriously. I haven't even read Oliver Twist and I still recognize that quote.
Second, I'm infatuated with my orphan. Fauna Sometimes the other orphans tell me to shut up, but they're just jealous that I'm smarter than them! What's not to love about her? She's just so awesome. eek
