There is a house that sits between worlds. It can only be found by somebody who is lost and manages to wander out of their own world. Happily, the owner of the house enjoys company, and is always willing to open his doors to a wanderer worlds away from home. Now, one might imagine that it would be difficult to become so lost that you actually wander away from your own world. Actually, this happens more often than most people think. So be careful, or you just might take a wrong turn at Albuquerque and find yourself at...

Miles

Ah, good day (sir/madam). Welcome to Barlow House. I am Miles, master Barlow's butler. The master has instructed me to greet all of his guests and ensure that they are properly welcomed.

What's that? You say you're lost? That's entirely understandable. In fact, if it were otherwise, you would not be here now. No, don't worry. The master is pleased to open his house to wayward travelers. You are welcome to rest here for as long as you like. There are plenty of guest rooms available upstairs if you're tired. If you're hungry, the pantry is well stocked and the kitchen staff is well versed in a wide variety of cuisine. If you have dirty clothes, feel free to place them in one of the laundry baskets in a guest room and the housekeeping staff will wash them according to the proper care instructions. Should you need anything at all, simply alert myself or another member of the household staff and we will be happy to assist you.

Excuse me? Oh, no, don't worry about that. Master Barlow does not ask for money from his guests. Although, if you do feel the need to offer some sort of compensation in return for hospitality, the master has a great love for stories and tales. Should you meet him while you are here, I am sure he would be grateful to hear one. In truth, the master sets down few rules for his guests. He simply asks that guests treat one another with civility and courtesy at the very least. And of course, he frowns upon violence in his house.

How do you get back? Well, the road that brought you here will take you back just as easily. You can find it right outside whenever you wish to leave. Simply set your mind to reaching your destination, and put one foot in front of the other. But the road may be a long one, so please consider the master's offer of hospitality, at least for a little while.

Oh, but where are my manners, making you stand in the foyer all this time? If you would like to rest for a while, please let me take your (hat/jacket/coat/etc.) and show you to a chair in the sitting room.

Barlow house sits between worlds, and lost travelers from a thousand worlds occasionally find their way to the door. The entire place has a vaguely dream-like quality to it, as though it's not quite real. The house usually consists of a number of guest rooms on the second floor and a kitchen, dining room, sitting room, library, lounge and main hall on the first floor. However, the house also seems to shift and change over time, and there is almost always a spare room tucked in somewhere. Behind the house is a spacious garden and a heated swimming pool.

Rules!

arrow Your word is final with regards to what your characters say, do and think. My word is final with regards to everything else.
arrow No Godmodding.
arrow No Powerplaying.
arrow No killing somebody's character without their permission.
arrow Romance is fine, but absolutely NO cyber.
arrow Keep it PG-13 or under.
arrow I realize nobody is perfect, but try to use correct spelling and comprehensible grammar. Also, I don't expect you to write novels, but please avoid one-line posts whenever possible.
arrow Please post in the third person and use quotation marks ( " " ) to indicate what you are saying.
arrow Follow the Gaia TOS and the rules of the Days of Roleplaying guild at all times.

You may have as many characters as you like, provided you make it clear exactly who is doing what when you post (by using different colors, for example). Simply post a brief profile before you bring a new character into the RP, and I will add it to the guest list. Since Barlow House sits between worlds, almost any sort of character could conceivably find their way to it. Any race, genre or background is acceptable. Here is a suggested profile skeleton, but feel free to use any format you please:

NPCs:
(Under sole control of Pizzasage unless otherwise noted)

Name:
Barlow
Race: Human, apparently.
Personality: Barlow almost always treats others with kindness and respect, although he can seem a bit distant from time to time. He dislikes violence and constantly encourages others to settle their conflicts peacefully. That being said, he does not turn warriors or soldiers away from his house.
Background/World of origin: He owns the house and grounds. As for his background, he will usually only say “There's really not that much to say,” and leave it at that.
How he came to be lost: He isn't. It's his house, yo.
Appearance:User Image

____________________________________________________________

Name: Miles
Race: Human, apparently.
Personality: Miles is polite, courteous and professional at all times. He always addresses people as “sir/madam,” although if he knows their name he will often say “master/madam (name).” He usually manages to stay out of sight and out of the way until he is summoned or feels that he is needed. When that happens, he appears quickly and efficiently.
Background/World of origin: He works for Barlow. That's all he'll really say on the matter.
Appearance:User Image

Note: Anybody in the RP may give Miles reasonable instructions or orders and he will follow them. For example, you could write “My character calls for the butler and asks for a glass of orange juice. Miles says 'Right away, sir,' and walks to the kitchen.” However, there are certain things Miles will not do under any circumstances:
Miles will not knowingly do anything to harm a guest, such as bringing them a poisoned drink. Of course, if he doesn't know the drink is poisoned, he can be tricked into giving it to the target.
Miles will not fight. If he is attacked, he will try to run away.
Miles will not be rude to a guest. For example, you can't write “Miles gives Teflon Billy the finger and then spits on his potato wedges.” Even if he is provoked, he is always polite.

Guests:

Bri Taso (Rinn Raven)
Blake (Kookol)
Alexis [Lexi] (xGaara-sanx)
Kenzie Apostle [Dre] (your_someone_just_for_you)
Alec Apostel (your_someone_just_for_you)
Arielle Moonsong (Tarma_Falloner)

Barlow sits in his favorite chair in the sitting room, perusing an old and dog-eared book. His house is quiet that evening. The occasional gust of wind makes the rain beat against the windows of the house. On an evening like this, Barlow is glad for his cozy sitting room and blazing fireplace. He sips a cup of hot green tea and gazes absentmindedly out the window. Any guest I have tonight will probably need a towel, or at least a warm place to sit by the fire. I'm sure Miles knows that already, of course.

After a while, Barlow begins to grow tired. He hides a yawn behind his hand as he sets his book down. "Miles," he says.

"Yes, sir," replies the butler.

"I believe I will retire for a while. Please see to it that any guests who may happen to arrive are comfortable."

"Yes, master Barlow." responds Miles.

Miles rises and heads for the stairs. "Good night, Miles," he says as he leaves the sitting room.

"Good night, sir," answers Miles.

After Barlow has left, Miles busies himself putting the house in order to receive guests. He lays out a number of towels in discreet locations near the foyer just in case a guest might need one, and he ensures that house slippers of various sizes are readily available.

Bri pushed open the door and smiled her greating at miles. She was soaked to the bone, water pooled around her feet as it ran in ruvulets from her sopping clothes and hair.

"Delight full weather outside, isn't it. How are you miles?" She shook out her sleeve, trying not to get water everywhere. she stepped out of her shoes and pushed them to the side and tried peeling her wet socks off and then wrung them out. "I'm sorry about the water and everything."

Blake eyed Miles carefully as he stated his 'name'. "Blake." He walked in causiously, keeping his black jacket. He scanned every inch of this house's area with his eyes. Nothing seemed unusually but there wasn't enough of time to make sure, he just stepped in. He noticed a girl there, Bri, but there was no sign of this 'Barlow'. Though he was dripping wet, he didn't bother to ask for a towel nor take one when offered.

((Yes, profiles do go on the forum.))

"Ah, madam Bri, welcome back!" said Miles as Bri entered.

Quote:

"Yes, magnificent weather indeed," he said as he helped her with her shoes and coat. "I am doing very well, thank you. And you?"

Quote:
"I'm sorry about the water and everything."

"Oh, no, it's quite all right," replied Miles as he offered Bri a towel and placed a pair of soft, warm slippers on the floor in front of her. "The master had a feeling that you might be our guest this evening. I have heard that the temperature will fall below freezing tonight. I'm glad you arrived before there was ice on the road."

Seeing that Blake appears intent on keeping his jacket and isn't interested in a towel, Miles changes his strategy a little bit.

"I am sure that you have been walking for a long time. Please, let me show you to a chair in the sitting room."

He directs his next question to both guests. "Madam Bri, Master Blake, would either of you like something to drink? The fresh hot apple cider is particularly good this evening."
PostPosted: Fri Dec 21, 2007 6:35 pm

Bri thanked him for each of his kind gestures. The idea that Barlow was expecting her didn't surprise her, he always seemed to know. she gave a wan smile to the man that had entered after him.

"Yes. Cider sounds brilliant," She smiled and her toes curled warmly in the slippers.

Once the guests are safely away from the drafty foyer and in chairs before the warm fire in the sitting room (assuming, of course, that Blake is comfortable moving), Miles goes to the kitchen. A few moments later he returns with a saucer, on which is a ceramic mug full of steaming hot cider and several sticks of cinnamon.

"Do be careful, madam," he said as he handed the saucer to Bri, "The cider is quite hot."

Once he has gotten any refreshments Blake might wand (just post to that effect if you want anything), he says to the two, "If you will excuse me for a moment, I will inform the master that he has guests." He then exits the sitting room and heads for the stairs to the second floor.

Bri took the mug with another smile and a nodd. "Thank you again." She sipped at her cidar and dipped a cinnamon stick in it. She turned her attention to the Black character, serveying him. She folded her feet under her and settled back in the comfortable chair listening intently to the crackle of the fire and the constant ticking keeping time on one of the clocks.

After a short while, Miles returned and announced: "Master Barlow."

"Thank you, Miles," said Barlow as he walked into the sitting room and smiled at the guests therein. "Blake, is it?" he asked the man, "Welcome to my house. Please, make yourself at home. I'm sure Miles explained everything, but if you have any questions, just let me know."

Ah, Bri! Welcome back." he said warmly as he took a seat. "It's good to see you again. Now let me see... How long has it been since we last had the pleasure of your company?"
