Lorelei was enjoying her holiday truffles.
And when I say truffles, I don't mean the chocolates.
I mean the rare mushrooms!
Lorelei wasn't sure how they started growing, but they did. One day she just walked out, barefoot as usual, and stepped on a truffle.
That had been a few days ago, and now she sat in the midst of them, plucking them up one by one and examining them. She wondered what made them so special, why were they so rare compared to other mushrooms?
Were they.... those mushrooms?
No, that would be silly. ... Those mushrooms would be arrested if they grew there, they ARE illegal, after all!

Jack grumbled as he bound a rag about his foot, cursing every rabbit on the mansion grounds for ever deciding it was okay to bite. Granted he had been trying to spear them, but it was their own damn fault for being so fat and slow. As it was he had gotten two fair sized ones that now hung from a rope tossed over his shoulder, made from a torn section of belt. The red shirt he had chosen that morning was now stained with dirt and dark splotches of drying blood, but he couldn't have been happier. In the distance he spotted a familiar green flash of hair, and forgetting about the pain in the sole of his foot he sprinted over toward her, holding tight to his catches. "Hey Lore!" he shouted loudly, waving his spear in the air.

Lorelei perked when she heard a familiar voice. However, it was different.
She looked up from her treasured mushrooms and saw Jack, covered in blood and carrying a spear. A lot of the baby fat had disappeared from his cheeks, and he was now taller than her.
A wide, blissful smile stretched over her face as she stood up (dropping the truffles) and dazedly ran over to Jack, enveloping him in a hug that got her loose white dress covered in the sticky, dark red blood of the rabbits that hung from Jack's back.
"Jack! You've grown tall... how is that? Does the world look smaller?" Her smile widened for a moment, but then her hand touched the cold fur of the fat hares. Tilting her head, she peered behind him and nodded.
"Ohhhh, you've been hunting! They look tasty, nice long ears and fat thighs," she nodded sagely, looking over Jack's prizes with pride (even though she hadn't caught them).

"I'ken beat up Duncan," he laughed, pulling the rope of rabbits off his shoulder to show her. "Gotta drain them," he guessed, "If you wanna cook them I mean." True he liked Lore and all, but he liked her best when she was making food. He dropped to a seat on the grass, wiping the head of his spear clean on the ground.

"Really? Bet he's shocked about that," her smile turned into a smirk for a split second before going back to her dazed smile.
"I'm afraid I've never 'drained' an animal before, though," she shook her head, "Teach me?" She picked up the rope and held the rabbits nonchalantly by their necks.

"Okay," Jack said with a sigh, obviously disappointed that she didn't already know. He snatched one of the rabbits from the rope, tossing it upside down to get a firm hold on the feet. He withdrew his boar knife from his belt, waving it at her. "You gotta do it like this," he explained, slicing the creature across the throat. It's head dangled free and blood began to pour out of it, trickling one the grass with an odd sheen.

"Oh, the poor grass..." Lorelei tilted her head as she watched the blood soak the grass and turn it a dirty red, "It was so pretty before."
Still, she took the other rabbit from Jack and eyed his boar knife.
"Though, if you don't mind, I'd rather use this," Lorelei shifted and reached behind her back, and soon pulled out a large carving knife.
"Daddy gave this to me," she said, "Because I'm... I'm going to be going to the Mediterranean Islands. I'm going to learn how to cook for real, Jack."
She finished her sentence by clenching her fist, and in a sudden erratic movement she swiped her cleaver across the rabbit's throat and lifted it up, letting the blood splatter on the ground before her, hitting the hem of her dress.
"I will be..."
She shook her head, her eyes glazing over back to their normal stupor.
"Oh dear, I got my robes all messy," she smiled dazedly, "Ah well, it's bound to happen when you cook."
