So what if I am different?
I'm not too sure if it would be better off in the anime area, so I decided to make it here... but if you guys think it belongs there, please move it there. =)

-----------------------------

Moving on, from a small debate in a certain topic, I decided, why don't we have a debate over which one is better? Which one has more advantage over the other? More and more, but here are MY opinions.

---------------------------

American cartoons and dubbed animes - Yes, it's English... but they cut ALL the good parts when they dub animes from Japan. They SCREW UP the voices too! >< It really annoys me and makes me turn less frequently to t.v.

I don't even watch t.v. much anymore. The only shows that are good are Family Guy and the Simpsons. Pure classic. Pure comedy. Purely original and based on a family's life.

I also don't like the fact that they change something that the Japanese made for teenagers into a kiddy show. I mean, c'mon! What's the deal with that? Yes, violence is bad, but most violence in most animes aren't as bloody, if you think about it. >.>

Japanese animes (subbed, of course) - One word. Language. Pure opportunity to actually LEARN the language little by little as you read the subs and listen to the characters. Although there isn't kanji to learn, you learn to speak basic words like.. Konnichiwa (a greeting) or Tadaimasu (I'm back) and so much more that I admit I don't know how to spell.

Originality. The anime is original. Forget the manga for a moment. The anime has the character's real voice. Yeah, it's another person voice acting it, but they make it unique, whereas Americans screw it up. >.>

...I'll type more tomorrow.. I'm tired. sweatdrop
...That just makes things easier to identify me! =D

I'm not too particular to the language when it comes to the show. English dubs sometimes turn out badly but there are shows out there with very good VA work. Most of the time the voices are just different. Someone who watched the Japanese sub version first might find it weird but it could just be different. They're both equal for me so I'll just list the pros and cons that I have with both.

Japanese Subtitled Works

Pros:

-Isn't restricted by censorship laws.
-Available before its English counterpart.
-Teaches commonly used Japanese phrases.
-Presents the anime in a way that most likely the way the creators intended. (No story cuts)

Cons:
-Require full attention. (A person cannot watch the anime while doing homework for example because it requires reading to understand.)
-Does not actually teach a person fluent Japanese. Unless the person goes out and study on their own, they will not learn fluent how to read and write nor use the words properly in conversations.
-Most subbed animes are obtained illegally from the internet and prohibits the creators of the show from profiting overseas.

English Dubbed Works

Pros:
-Can be understood by American audience. Does not require eyesight to enjoy.
-Sometimes present an alternative view and voices to certain animes.
-Allow anime viewers to enjoy the anime without illegal download therefore hurting the creators of that anime.

Cons:
-Sometimes censor or changes certain animes to fit the strict ratings of Americans.

They pretty much even out in the end for me. It's a hit or miss thing. Sometimes the American version is better sometimes the Japanese version is better. I'll take for example the show, Yu-Gi-Oh. It's a show that was intended for a mature audience but has been turned into a children's cartoon here in America. While the adult aspects of the show has been cut out I don't think it's made the show worse to watch. Someone who saw the show as it originally was probably might hate the American version but the people who watched the American version probably has no problem with it. As far as Voice Acting goes I find the American version to have much better voices than the Japanese counterpart. They gave the characters accents and proper gender voices. (Bakura had a woman's voice in the Japanese version. In the English version he had a young British accent.) Admittedly Marik's voice was terrible but hey, you can't win them all.

As for original American cartoons, I find them entertaining on a different level. (Hey, anime was inspired by American cartoons so it can't be that bad.) They do not draw feelings out of me that animes do but they're good for short comedic purposes. Though there are shows like Avatar that originated from here that's as good as any anime out there. I think it just takes some time for the trend to catch on before more serious cartoons are produced.

To me theres no battle between the two. Though they are the same, they're completely different in the end. It's just like Linh said with the pros and cons. You can't always win, but they're both good regardless. Sure voices are messed up, stuff cut out but we still watch it don't we? Well then that says a lot right there =P if we didn't watch then whats the point of bothering.

To me, it totally depends. And usually same goes for some fans too. Like she said, the American version tries to reach out to the American audience.

lol this may have stemmed from the whole avatar craze but hey it's a matter of opinion.

I must say that really, as much as I used to complain about how America ruined a bunch of anime (4kids tv for example) i can't say that they ruined ALL of them. We all used to sit here and watch Pokemon when we were little and had no knowledge of the Japanese version because we were little and satisfied with the english. Now we complain about how the Americans ruined it because they changed the American VAs and not because we believe that the Japanese was better.

Now with the whole "They made it kiddy" thing in mind, that could be say for the original japanese too! For example, The Get Backers. The manga was waaaaaaaay more hentai-ish than they made the anime. The manga had lots of cleavage flying around with lots of yuri-like scenes but they cut all of that out for the anime and not the americans. I can say that i did complain about how 4kids ruined one piece though and i still do. I mean jeez, Sanji can't even smoke, no, he has to have a lolipop! jeez, I'm so glad that Funimation got their hands on it.

Now, Avatar is something that caught my eye because of the fact that it was made by Americans who were influenced by anime. Ones that most of us enjoy too like Samurai Champloo (thus, Jet's appearance in Avatar makes him look like Mugen), and FLCL. I thought that it was some of the best animation too because the characters were more detatiled than ones like Ed Edd and Eddy. Just the fact that I know that they worked so hard to make a solid storyline got me.

All in all, I can now watch a show in english and actually appreciate it after a while. I can't say that for all anime though. At first, if i watched it in japanese first i almost always cringe when i here it in english but then as i keep watching I learn to get used to it. I've just found a new respect for American companies now that I've heard about American VAs and their struggle against fans that almost want to attack them because people believe that they ruined their favorite character's voice. I have respect for the writers too because in some shows they americanize it to make it funny for american audiences. Like Ghost Stories, they added all kinds of humor about american tv shows and stuff to make us laugh and make the storyline less boring (yes... it was boring in japanese) where else would you here a line like "It was that Vic Mignogna look alike wasn't it!? Fullmetal Disgusting is what THAT is!"

First and foremost I'm gonna have to give some high tens to everyone who mentioned Avatar yea you guys rock! Woo Avatar mrgreen (sorry I just love that show).

Anyway...It really annoys me and bothers me when people just try to find any little flaw they can against American shows or dubbed anime. They hate it just because "Oh my god their speaking english and its on tv! No way unexceptable!". It makes me feel like their ashamed of being American sometimes. Its like, fine just watch your illegal animes on the computer and avoid tv if you hate it so much. Of course thats not with everyone and there's a lot of horrible American cartoons out there (like Kappa Mikey OMG worst show EVER and my lil cuz had to make me watch it scream ), the problem is when people just hate it because its American-made.

Most of the anime's I've watched (almost all) I found on t.v. So I started watching everything in english and I very much prefer it dubbed rather than subtitles. A lot of times subtitles are illegible and you can't even enjoy the show right. I love having the freedom of watching my anime on television legally and understandable so I can enjoy it and relax. Yet, I'm gonna have to say that when you first watch something in Japanese and then turn to watch it in English, it is strange and you'll probably like it better in the original language. However, thats probably true vise-versa only because thats how you first fell in love with the show so of course your gonna prefer it that way.

There's also a lot of funny and enjoyable American cartoons out there. I used to be really into Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents. What!? The classic Spongebob episodes were so funny! But after the sb movie, the show got horrible, corny and I haven't seen it in forever. There are a lot of other clever cartoons out there too like South Park (despite whatever anyone says thats one of the most intelligently thought out show out there), Simpsons, Boondocks (first season was better but still strong), etc.

In my opinion I'll always stick with dubbed anime since thats how I'll encounter most of it. Yup. Thank you adult swim for all the wonderful anime's you show! ^.^

So what if I am different?
After taking quite a while to read, I admit I do agree with some of you. Avatar, I'm okay with. I guess I'll say I'm okay with Xiaolin(sp?) Showdown from Kids WB. I'm the type of person that would often forget what's in front of me and go off to lalaland, meaning my ears have turned off and my eyes have stopped paying attention, but I really do prefer the original stuff. Yeah, Pokemon and all the other earlier animes from the 90s, we all watched on Saturday mornings... but I only have one reason for this: Animes (hopefully) was something we haven't discovered. Sailor Moon was my first cartoon I've watch and yet to have discovered from Japan. Then came along Pokemon and Digimon and all the other stuff. Same goes with Cardcaptors.

But for me, comparing Cardcaptors to Cardcaptor Sakura, I have ALOT of things I can say about it, but I'll just say one thing: I prefer Sakura's card chants from CCS. I guess it's true that dubbed or not have its ups or down. IMO, Dubbings sometimes make alot of GOOD things into something bad. They take out certain episodes for some reasons and all that stuff. Like DiC's Sailor Moon. They took about the last 2 or 3 seasons of the anime that included Chibiusa. ...I think, but if anyone wants to correct me, please go right ahead.
...That just makes things easier to identify me! =D
